Gay Drama "Ossan's Love" has been a HUGE hit in year 2018 and is hands down my favorite J-drama so far. Main Character Haruta Soichi (played by Tanaka Kei) is such an adorable character, trapped between two male admirers, as well as his own conflicted sexual orientation.
This drama carries a light-hearted mood, yet opens up discussion to a much deeper topic: homosexuality in Japan.

Thank you for sharing this Cara! I'm gender non-binary and have just applied for JET. It will certainly be both challenging and interesting to engage with a culture that is less aware of LGBT identities. I love your positivity towards not hiding our identities in order to share cultures! Here's hoping more shows like this pop up in the future! :)

Of course! I don't see a point in hiding/changing yourself just to fit into another culture. We're in Japan to introduce a different way of life/perspective so yea. Have a great time in Japan! Good luck for the JET apps.

I've seen people vaguely touch on the subject but they've never really gone into depth about whether people in Japan were accepting or not to the LGBT community. So thank you for making this video, it helps a lot! :)

I really appreciate this video especially as an lgbt person because a lot of straight youtubers in japan tend to either not address this or make it sound like it’s perfectly fine when it’s definitely different from the US or other western countries. I’m currently in japan now and while it hasn’t come up, if it does I don’t plan on pretending to be straight lol

Benefits to being Bi: super chameleon skills. 😂 Unless I happen to get a girlfriend people will be none the wiser. That's not to say I'm gonna hide my sexuality when I go to Japan. It's just that it's not like I'm gonna run up to everyone waving a pride flag. No one will notice.

Hi. I know this is super late but i just finished ossans love on netflix in one sitting today. I love the series..... And im kinda confused w the ossan's love and ossan's love: in the sky? I would categorise it as J-BL comedy. Fujoshi is an offensive term that has been adopted by the BL-community but shouldn't be used as categorisation. Also, I can assure you that BL is gay but it just isn't specifically targeted towards LGBT as an audience.
