Grievous is the literal definition of “The Rule Of Cool.” He made the entire galaxy fear him, and he was one of the many factors that lead to the Rise Of The Empire. The Clone Wars was an incredible show. However, the show WRECKED him! His only saving grace was his assault on Dathomir.

The whole idea behind General Grievous lore wise was for Palpatine to create the ultimate villain, a monster, an icon of terror that would strike fear in the hearts of the Jedi, but more importantly, the hearts of the public. Something that would make the Republic more unified and more accepting of a stricter and more centralized government, aka the Empire. I know most of the things that General Grievous did in the vaster lore were too graphic to be let in a children's cartoon, so instead keep him delegated as a rare treat for the viewers. Someone we hear is constantly kicking ass and taking light sabers, and have someone else take Grievous's place in the battles he gets his ass handed. Meanwhile Grievous is off screen slaughtering Jedi, using biological weapons on planets that the Droids are automatically immune to, and be this shadowy figure that once appears on screen, you know where the animation budget is going.

Grievous isn’t the only one, he just got hit the hardest. Everyone in the show has some very inconsistent fighting abilities. Savage Oppress, someone who just recently learned how to hold a lightsaber, is able to beat (or at least temporarily overpower, I can’t remember, it’s been a long time) Anakin and Obi-Wan both at the same time singlehandedly. Asajj Ventress gets beaten by Anakin and Obi-Wan both multiple times in the series, but then after being betrayed by Dooku suddenly is able to overpower them both with the Force and choke them; I get she was more powerful than usual because of her emotional state, but still, to go from losing to either one at a time to overpowering both at the same time seems like way too big of a stretch. Not to mention Cad Bane clowning around with Obi-Wan and Quintana Voss, or Oni-Wan losing to Maul only to be able to hold his own against him and his brother at the same time later. Those are only a few examples, the show is filled with them.

In my opinion, tartakosvky did a better job with the villains and some characters better than Filoni and Jorge Luca, Grievous had everything to be a great villain, his tragic history, his skills and intelligence but they only make it a joke, well at least he enters it. top characters nerfed by their creator for the sake of the plot, since he had many opportunities to kill Jedi or win but of course he has to speak and trust himself to let him escape or be saved because if they introduced the 2003 one then it would be all a riot for the jedi.

This guy has like one of the best designs ever in Star Wars. The claws on the feet, the reptilian eyes, the four spinning lightsabers, his armor, his visible organs… in the old serie he is white, which is already terrifying, even though he doesn’t have organs, he is more imposing, like this guy is so tall, like 3 meters tall that is so badass… Tartakovsky made him an absolutely gorgeous introduction, and turned him in an op, charismatic, and terrifying villain. Filoni and Lucas turned him into a dumb egocentric cocky machine, as dumb as how bad he fights (I mean, he gets defeated by Ventress because he is basically swinging his lightsabers all over the place non sensically). In Revenge of the Siths he is as least a bit cool, he displays some skills during his battle instead of smashing his sabers in random directions, even though he gets defeated too easily. At least the novelization pointed out that Grievous was striking Obi Wan with 20 hits per second. Just the dumbest thing about Grievous in the movie and TCW, is the fact that he never properly uses his claws. I mean when he gets to grab Ahsoka’s head, he doesn’t smash and crush her skull on the floor like he did in Tartatovsky serie, no, he just throws her backwards. Sure in TCW he kills a random clone with his foot, but man he could do so much more, like using lightsabers with them, switching between hands and feet. Also his running in canon is so awkward, like a cringe cockroach, while back then he was running (not creeping) on the walls like a terrifying reptilian creature. Such a shame that the only episode in which he destroys Obi Wan in 10 seconds was deleted… Plus, the fact that he was overpowered in Tartakovsky serie was okay since all the characters were, and also… is a goddam Jedi killer ! So he has to kill Jedi ! And to be built for it ! Come on Filoni can you at least understand this ?!

Very well made video! I thought Grievous was done dirty in the Filoni Clone Wars. Compared to the Genndy Clone Wars he was a One-Cyborg army. Scary even. He is like a bulldog the Separatists send out to lash out at their enemies and wreak havoc. Instead he is almost a blithering mess in the CGI show. I don't know why Filoni nerfed him so hard. I don't recall you mentoning how he kills so few people in this show. He kills a headstrong and rash Jedi Mon calamari padawan at one point. So he definitely wasn't getting any strong "wins." My opinion is that Grievous could have worked as a "I'll get you next time, nobody can kill me " villain if he would have been represented as the terifying monster that he was ment to be(cunning, powerfull, calculated and ruthless beyond immagining ). He should have killed Ventress with ease, he should have mortally wounded Ahsoka (and that would have helped in Ahsoka's character development even more), he should have killed at least 4 of those god damn younglings etc etc...and generally get more screen time to kill Jedi (and maybe lose more honorably to Obi wan) I liked him in the movie, it was genious in 2003 CW (even if I don't like that show a lot), but the 2008 series was a Big dissappointment. I suppose I'll w8 for disney to either ruin him totally or make him great again in a new Grievous series or something. and at 22:26 I can agree, I though Jar Jar was ok but a bit too much in the movies, in Clone wars he actually is a good comic relief and support character

@@Jdudec367yes, but compared to Grievous, its still low. Since Grievous literally lost everything due to the Yamrii, the Jedi and the Siths. The man lost both of his parents and his first love to the Yamrii during the conflict in disrespectful ways, lost most of his people and his ten wives and thirty children to the starving due to the Jedi cutting the commercial routes because they protected the Yamrii who literally attacked and enslaved his people for several years, after Grievous finally managed to push them back to their Homeworld. Got used as a mercenary by the banking clan to save his people, lost his body due to the sabotage of his ship by Dooku. Lost most of his free will due to the Palpatine and Dooku who modified his brain via sith magic and some technology. Is used for the entirety of the war as a weapon pr a pawn by Dooku and Palpatine. And finally, lost his life at the end by Obi wan Kenobi. And that is all we are talking that is shown. Because most of the time, we only saw his General Grievous face when he appeared, but we never knew how hard it must have been for him emotionally during the Clone wars, like when he is alone or in his quarters. All the pain, the hatred and loss of his family and himself should have been shown, like with Vader who is haunted by his past.

One thing Lucas was afraid was that Grievous would overshadow Vader in fan popularity in episode 3 and the entire prequel series was about Vader. Also it was probably a secondary concern, but it starts to raise lore questions about why Vader seems so permanently immobile but Grievous can be agile, better armed and seems to have better cybernetics than even Return of the Jedi era Vader. So Grievous had to be nerfed and made to look cowardly ( in contrast to Vader..) and that 'cough' would also serve to imply that his cybernetics were less advanced ( again in comparison to Vader-who does not cough and has a more regular breathing)..

And another thing about the ruined grievous is that Grievous in lore was made by Sidious to be the "perfect public enemy", he was made to make people fear him more than them fearing loss of their rights and liberty, and in the show he was supposed to be the risk, the stakes, when the protagonists are facing a villain, the audience should be worried even if they know they would come out alright. When the good guy overcome the villain, the audiences should have a sign of relief that they have survived. But Grievous in the TCW Doesn't have that. He's been written as such a loser and sucker that we know he's just going to lose, and there's no sense of danger anymore. The Tartakovsky depiction of Grievous was that villain. Even if you have watched the prequel films and know that Ki-adi, Aayla and Shaak survived the encounter, you still worry that they're dead or not going to make it, the returned Darth Maul is that Villain, and you actually feel his menace being a massive wrench in anyone's plans, even the Droid Gunship on Onderon and Tactical droid on Quell can make you worry, but not Grievous in TCW. When you hear him or see him, you know the game was rigged from the start, And he's not the man in checkered suit or holding the shovel.

The Grievous we saw in the CGI series was closer to how George Lucas envisioned him and apparently he didn't like how Tartakovsky depicted him in Clone Wars. Per George's own words he wanted Grievous to be less like another Vader and more a mustache twirling Saturday morning cartoon villain and made sure he was depicted as such when he was involved in The Clone Wars. So the reason Tartakovsky Grievous and Filoni Grievous seem like two different characters is because they really are.

There was an inherent design problem with General Grievous. If George wanted him to be such a weak coward, he shouldn't have allowed him to be the best-designed character in the franchise. You see the guy and think, Terminator in Star Wars, but instead you get some very killable guy Never understood his over-exaggerated moves. He's a robot, he needs very understated moves with surprising strength. I always thought that the kit-fisto fight was a direct comparison to the grievous intro in CW 2003. In both, Greivous allows the Jedi to escape, but in the earlier version its very clearly a win. It was like a direct insult to anyone who enjoyed CW Greivous. Fisto never seemed like he was gonna lose, it always felt like he had the upperhand in that episode.

It’s not only grievous that’s character is nothing like he’s supposed to be. Dooku was made to be just evil despite being morally grey in the movies. Anakin was WAY to stoic and charismatic. That was an entertaining video. One interesting bit of trivia about Grievous is that his coughing and breath problems in Episode III were originally the result of Mace Windu attacking his chest with the Force during the ground portion of the Battle of Coruscant at the end of the 2003 series. Though I suppose they chose to go with that portrayal in the new iteration of the Clone Wars because it was better known and therefore more recognizable, and since their version retconned the other they didn't need to adhere to its lore.

In ROTS the only Jedi that is referred to as "General" is Kenobi. It was sort of implied that obi Wan was the sole General of the Grand Army of the Republic and that the sole General of the separatists was Grievous. Setting up a rivalry of leadership between the two. This made the line "You lose General Kenobi." A character defining quality. Its was a battle of wits as much as it was a physical battle. TCW diminishes this by making every jedi a general and making grievous constantly lose. I prefer 03 jedi killer juggernaut Grievous and crippled but still capable ROTS grievous. TCW is great in many regards and adds alot to the prequel era. But boy did it drop the ball on grievous. I wish they had kept the 03 character and adapted him into the 08 series story.

I recall this change being all Lucas’ decision, because he felt that Grievous being the unstoppable Jedi terminator would somehow take away from what Vader would become. He wanted Vader to be the ultimate Jedi butcher, after Order 66 they went into hiding purely because of Darth Vader being such an effective Jedi killer. Lucas also felt he’d just feel like Vader without the force and wanted to further separate them, but I don’t think Grievous being the monster he was in Legends would affect Vader at all, especially since Canon has started to show Vader a bit less than he should be, like being too banged up in Jedi Survivor, not killing Reva, and then losing the way he did to Obi Wan in the final fight in OWK, plus the Inquisitors take away a bit of Vader’s original reputation as this boogeyman who was singlehandedly responsible for almost wiping out the Jedi survivors of Order 66. So the change to Grievous is now more pointless, even from Lucas’ perspective because of the introduction of the Inquisitors and Vader’s appearances in Jedi Survivor and OWK.

They didn’t really waste time showing him slaughtering nameless Jedi so Almost all of Grievous’ fights are against heroes we see in later films so he can’t win because he would kill them and in the case of Ahsoka cutting his arm off or any situation where he has a Jedi trapped, they write themselves into a hole and have to come up with some bs way for them to escape like a child overpowering a machine demigod we’ve seen literally throw full grown men around in the same series. They didn’t have any good designs or people to create a new Jedi-killing warlord, but they tried, leading to the abomination we see in the “cannon” Star Wars media. He tells Dooku he won because he doesn’t want to admit defeat, and use the logic that since he forced Fisto to retreat, but Dooku quickly puts him in his place by calling him out on that lie. It’s not “weird”, it makes sense why he doesn’t want to admit his failure to Dooku. Also, while I agree Grievous was not handled well by Filoni and Lucas, comparing him to the 2D Grievous in a quite exaggerated Clone Wars micro series (which I love just as much as the next guy alright), is honestly not a good comparison. I love Grievous, and once again; he was handled badly, but some of these comparisons are not very well thought out, just saying. I agree with most of you, but some of these arguments don’t really mesh well with me, still, him being defeated by Gungans is sad. If he took out more than just three before being defeated, like at least ten or fifteen, then I would feel less bad about it.

I understand your feelings about the matter, I feel like he could have been done better. But I think it’s less the lack of understanding of who Grevious is, and more a lack of abilities to properly show them using the 3D engine they were using. I mean, honestly most of the movements in the beginning were hella janky and as the show went on they got more experienced using the engine and were able to make better scenes in general. That and well, at this time Grevious was only really capable at killing clones and lesser Jedi. He doesn’t really kill all that many Jedi Masters and he really struggles against them. Also, big advantage that Jedi have over Grevious is their ability to use the force, which is why Obi-Wan could quite literally body Grevious in the early stages of the war but not in the later stages because Grevious finally figured out a way to force them into a lightsaber duel.

At that point, Grievous is almost a fighting-comic relief (in the Clone Wars). And by the way, i am also loving the Clone Wars series. I love him as a villan because of that funny yet repulsing coughing because those things should not happen to what is almost an Android as this point. So i believe that although he is suppose to be this deadly opponent once, he is no longer that good, because he turn too many of his human parts into droid part, making him less force superior than full Jedi. That's why he 'never win' anymore. But if they had make him too strong, his 'dark side comedy' would have been 'too dark' for the series 'lighter tone'. I still love him as a vilain and i am always happy when he appear in an episode... But yes, i totally see where you stand and what you say is accurate. Just over a year ago I would have agreed with you about grievous being the weakest part of the show. But after watching the clone wars for the third time now, I think Grievous is handled pretty well actually (not perfect, I would still have liked more badassery though not on the level of 2003 clone wars). They are indeed two different characters, but also from two very different shows. 2003 is over the top untamed force powers and battles. Clone wars 2008 is way more restrained in being cool almost. It’s more about the development of characters and story. So first of all, 2003 grievous wouldn’t fit in 2008 show obviously. That I always knew. But now I like the toned down version more, because it feels more realistic. Keep in mind, and this was said even in 2003 show: grievous had no force powers, he must have intimidation, fear and surprise at his side to succeed. If not, he should flee. This is what he did in 2008. (Again, I would have liked to see him kill more enemies and jedi in lightsaber combat). So it’s perfectly reasonable that he uses droids and nasty tactics to his advantage, he must make up for his lack of force powers in some way. Also why he lost to Ventress can be explained. Grievous was trained to fight and kill jedi, not dark side users. Jedi and sith have different combat methods and fighting skills. So he wasn ‘t up to the task of defeating asajj (who even sidious became worried about her power) CONCLUSION: The biggest crime imo of the clone wars 2008, is not So much the portrayal of Grievous, but showing too much of him losing instead of winning and being a force to be reckoned with. (Which was done right in the unfinished arc, crystal crisis on utapau)

One of the best words to describe Filoni's Clone Wars Grievous is emasculated. At least in ROTS Grievous was on his death bed dealing with a crushed chest/organ sac. Though the final duel between Obi-Wan and Grievous is much better in the ROTS novelization. On top of everything else I also felt like he was eventually booted from the stage. Like you said he's one of the most important characters in Star Wars, but where was he??? Hanging out at Dooku's house??? He only appeared in a handful of episodes throughout all 7 seasons. Grievous's "canon" backstory is sooo dumbed down compared to his original EU one as well. Oh and his badass design totally screams Saturday morning mustache twirling villain lol.

i have a perfect "lost episodes" arc for 2008 clone wars, it's more or less volumes 1 and 2 of the 2003 run broken into 1-3 episodes in on their own. that way General Grievous would get mutable wins and remind fans that he's feared in the galaxy, sure it would retcon every single time he showed up before hand. he turned several Jedi into either into thinly sliced lunch meat, or leaves them in a state where they can't be recognized instantly. as well as bringing back Captain Fordo and most of the arc trooper squad.

Little bit of a return to form for him I would say, and what’s insane is that the group of night sisters he takes out were certainly more competent and dangerous than the gungans lmao. His choreography didn’t look completely nonsensical this time and the way he mocked the mother’s last words to Morgan by telling her to run was terrifyingly brilliant. That was also a great callback to the micro series where he tells the droid attack on the Wookiees guy to run “you only prolong the inevitable.” This appearance might join his 2003 version in my head cannon.

Obi-wan was also probably the best fit to take on Greivous seeing how Obi-wan's style is extremely defense oriented. Any other combat style and you wouldn't know how to defend against Greivous, and that was just his more orthodox attacks, not using all his flips and kicks from the 2003 series. However I guess the reason Filoni and team made Grievous more of your typical clumsy, inconpetant cartoon bad guy because he was kinda like that in Revenge Of The Sith. In my personal opinion 2003 CW Grievous and Ep3 Grievous were also very different. Ad I do think 2008 Grievous is more like his movie counterpart. Of course, I don’t see why the creators wanted to make Grievous more like his Ep3 version, since a lot of the characters who weren’t that well written in the prequels were changed to be better and more likable people in the 2008 CW (like Anakin) So why couldn’t they just make Grievous just as much of a badass war tactician like he was in the 2003 CW and unlike Revenge Of The Sith Grievous? Well, I don’t know. It’s also a possibility Lucas wanted Filoni and company do this change, but that’s just a wild theory. Anyway great video! It was really entertaining.

My personal biggest problem with clone wars grievous is at he is much more cowardly than he’s meant to be even in rots he only retreats strategically to prolong his ability to lead the droid army his background as a former kaleesh warlord is proof he isn’t meant to be cowardly he’s meant to be strategic and a truly honourable warrior

28:03 This nitpick isn’t even a nitpick. Stopping to do nothing has an effect on the plot, and it is not a nitpick. Ahsoka lives in Fight #1 between him and the Citrus Tail because he does nothing in between two scenes for 20 seconds. That’s a serious issue, and it’s the same reason Barry Allen has to be deemed an insufferably inconsistent character every time he makes himself known.

The thing with making Grievous a coward and a blowhard is disappointing, but wouldn’t be objectively bad on its own- were it not for the fact that Grievous’ in universe position inherently makes him one of the most important villains. The show makes him so much of a loser that how he’s portrayed makes his in-universe status feel completely illogical; in his last episode “Necessary Bond”, Grievous fails to take down LITERAL CHILDREN on top of failing his mission to capture the Hondo pirates. The show has this weird need to actively undercut Grievous, as you brought up, but does so to a point you genuinely question how the Separatists lasted at all or why Sidious and Dooku bother to keep him around (yeah, Separatists are supposed to lose the war, but they should probably at least be a believable threat that the Republic would do what Sidious wants).

I hate how they murdered Grievous & Dooku' characters & motivations in the show. Now they're just Saturday morning cartoon villains, just twirling their mustaches being like "Oh I'll get you next time your gosh darn meddling Jedi..." P.S. I call Bullsh!t that Ashoka, who may I remind people is teenager at the time and still only just a Padawan, was able to force the cybernetic sleight of state of the art servos, pistons, & hydraulics (or whatever they use) to cut Grievous' own Karking hand off. Hell, I doubt she would be able to force an ORGANIC beings arm like that of similar height & weight without using the force in such a way that I do not believe a Padawan is capable of pulling off.

I have no idea who you are or how I got here, but I agree. Please forgive me while I go on a small rant of my own. They must've realised that Grievous at some point in the future would need to fight against either Orbital Wan Kenobi, Anaking Skyjoger, Ahsoka Butano or other main characters so they had to nerf him. If you put 2003 Grievous against any of them he would either kill them (with some dificulty probably), criticaly injure them or make them retreat. Not only was he an extremely skilled warrior before the cybernetic enhancements (don't know if this is only in legends or is in canon too), he was built and trained to kill jedi by a skilled ex-jedi master. Also, is it just me or 2003 Grievous design looks cooler than 2008 and onwards? There he looks more bulky, taller (or at least it feels like that) but he still was fast as heck and concealing most of his body with the cape was a nice addition. Him using both his legs and arms while fighting looked cool. There he actually felt like a unstoppable killing machine. I would also like to add that he was a nice counter to jedi, which from how overpowered they were and still are in both legends and canon is something that was sorely needed to level the plainfield. It might've been extremely hard but I feel that 2003 Grievous' deisgn, if translated to the 3d artstyle of 2008 Clone Wars, would've looked amazing, maybe even more intimidating.

When you talk about the prequel movie with all due respect, ask yourself this, would you be functioning at full capacity if all of your vital organs were crushed?

I treat the show as in world jedi/republic propaganda directed at the masses. What actually happened is actually diluted to make the republic look better and General Grievous is made out to be a bumbling fool when in reality he is competent, terrifying, and cool.

the thing is it doesnt even make sense in universe. I mean someone as powerful, competent, and clever as Sidious would never order Grievous to be the General of his Army or tell him his secrets, if he has to be saved from Gungans. And to trust him to capture him and attack Coruscant? Never. I mean how should someone who loses to Gungans beat the Jedi that guarded the chancelor? Its so stupid. And even worse is his change in backstory. From a broken warrior that had everything taken from him, that fights Jedi for actually really understandable reasons, to some bloke who thought a metal armor would look nice. Embarassing.

The only way I would’ve accepted grievous losing to Gungans would’ve been if grievous would’ve single-handedly killed at least 300-400 of them and they beat him by just an overwhelming number of gungans like almost all of gugan society was trying to capture him
