Ronaldo has his "Siuuu", Serge Gnabry is "cooking", other players have their very own signature moves when it comes to celebrating goals. But it wasn't always like this. Once upon a time, goal scorers would briefly raise a hand and quickly run back to the middle of the pitch. Why has that changed? And what does it say about modern football and all of us...?
What's your favorite goal celebration out there? Tell us in the comments...
Report: Kamilla Jarzina and Henning Hesse

Goal celebrations in modern football is part of a player's identity like Ronaldo's Siu, Messi's tribute to his grandmother, Bale's heart sign(which he trademarked it) and Salah's and Mane's tribute to Allah. Back here in South Africa, he dance when ever we score. Look at Simphiwe Tshabalala's goal against Mexico at the 2010 world cup.

Curious that the video showed Balotelli who has also been chided for his lack of a celebration, but who argued that the letter carrier doesn't celebrate delivering the mail. Or at least he is reputed to have said. It's always been hard separating what Mario actually did from people claimed he did.

My favorite celebration of all time is Fabio Grosso's after he scored the 1:0 in extra time against Germany in the semi-finals 2006. I personally prefer Cristiano’s celebrations when he was a young winger at Man Utd because each one was unique and emotional in the moment. Messi is the most humble player ever seen in this game for his stats and persona. That might be because that is how he is even outside the pitch, so humble. There is no showing-off in his celebration. He always points his hands to the sky to dedicate his goals to his grandmother who urged him to play the game to which he's the identity now. He hugs and shares smiles with his teammates after each goal. As for the iconic celebration in Bernabeau, that I think was the result of all the fouls, ill-treatments, frustrations, anger caused by the opposition in that match. Coz if u check his career history, he's been the player on whom fouls have been committed the most. Even after suffering horrific injuries, he still gets up enduring everything week in, week out. He never dives even after pushing, pulling, thrashing him. If he falls down, he gets up straight after and starts playing without complaining. Some say he's not the strongest out there. If this does not prove he's the strongest, I don't know what does.

BRs The Champions said it best when Griezman says: "Whithout a signature celebration, what's the point of scoring a goal?" And he's right about Ronaldo's siu thing. If you watch Ronaldo highlights, his goal celebrations were so much more interesting and endearing and real before he discovered the Siu. After the Siu, his celebrations turned boring and predictable, despite becoming the most iconic celebration on the planet. As for Mbappe...I keep expecting him to sniff his fingers like that Molly Shannon character on Saturday Night Live from the 90s, when she would shove her hands into her armpits and then have a good sniff, a la Joachim Low.

As much as I like the super talented Cristiano, I never liked his particular style of celebration, a kind of "interrupted jump" or "downwards jump". There are so many layers in celebrations, with political tinges (like Reinaldo's statue), or simply references to private jokes or aspects of the players life. For me, the most impressive celebration was Bebeto in FIFA 1994 world-cup mimicking a father rocking an imaginary baby (quickly joined by some team mates). African national teams players dancing together are also among my favorites.

@KiwiNikified I think that is what the critics of trademark celebrations find fault with: Today the player is the brand, in the past it was the team. That CR7's career, for example, ended the way it did because the boy had too many eyes on him for too long to remain humble in a team.

I remember the outcry in the late 80s of players, mostly in the Premier League . The media was having a field day of all the player's patting each others backsides, and I remember one picture where players were swapping spit (or claimed to be doing so). Im not sure how widespread this was, or how much the media beat things up, but I wasnt a supporter of the game, so if I knew about it, it must have been widely reported and photographed.

Ist mir jetzt auf Englisch zu schwierig zu schreiben: Entschuldigung dafür! (Sorry for for not writing this text in english. My skills are not good enough) Ich finde diese personisierten Torjubel , egal ob Aubameyang, CR7, Lewandowski oder auch Modeste (als FC-Fan) eher peinlich.

I doubt anyone plays football just to celebrate. And Cristiano's first suuuii was his authentic reaction. He didn't come up with it at home or STH, he just did it.

How can you make a video about footballers celebrating and forget 2 out of 3 of Mario Balotelli‘s celebration? The instagram post and the one at the Euros vs Germany
@dwkickoff
@dwkickoff 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, Mario certainly had some memorable ones. The one against Germany would certainly be in if this was a best of celebrations video, which it isn't:)))

Football is a low scoring game so goals are precious. Let the scorers celebrate however they want to.
