How Good Is Austin Reaves, Actually?

Some NBA fans think Austin Reaves is a future All-Star, and some think he only gets as much attention as he does because he plays for the Los Angeles Lakers. Anybody playing next to LeBron James and Anthony Davis is going to be under a microscope, but how much of the spotlight does Austin Reaves deserve? With how Austin Reaves has been performing for Team USA FIBA exhibition games so far, he's gotten some increased attention lately.
But how good is Austin Reaves, actually?
We got to see him step up big time late in the season for the Lakers when they were without LeBron James, who was out recovering from a foot injury. Not only did Reaves elevate his own play, but he proved that he was capable of playing as the lead guard alongside Anthony Davis.
The Lakers resigning Austin Reaves, who was an unrestricted free agent this offseason, was a huge boost to their potential heading into the future. There was the fear he could've gotten snatched up by the San Antonio Spurs if they offered him the max, but the LA Lakers got lucky, signing him to a very team-friendly contract. If Reaves can even become 50% of what his ceiling might be, then they're going to be in good shape.

As a Laker fan it's been a joy to see him. In the dark era 2022-mid 2023 the Lakers were looking for anyone and everyone who could give them quality minutes. But Reaves was one of those guys who took that opportunity and gave it 100%. He's such a winning player. He can do a bit of everything on offense, but more so than that he makes quick confident decisions and executes under pressure. I would never accuse him of being checked out, or not taking shots he's supposed to. One of my favorite moments was when he crossed over Giannis. Yeah, it's a guard dealing with a big on the perimeter, but for someone of his standing to not be too afraid to attack arguably the best player in the league? that's uncommon, He earned the respect of LeBron, and eventually a starting spot even as the Lakers ascended to a conference finalist again. I'm rooting for him

Austin Reaves been a crucial part of the Los Angeles Lakers' success. Reaves is a legitimately good player, as he showed in his first playoff game, and other coaches and teams have begun treating him as such. Most importantly Reaves gives you value because he does everything quite well and doesn't take much off the table as a perimeter player.
@johndurrer7869
@johndurrer7869 10 ай бұрын
Interesting thing about Reaves. He led all guards in true shooting percentage (on ball and off ball) even though he often takes and misses half court shots at the end of quarters. Most players time those shots perfectly so that it won’t destroy their stats. Reaves doesn’t do that he always does what is best for the team even at the cost of himself. You take away those half court shots and his three point shooting would’ve been around 43% for the year. His true shooting percentage would’ve gone up from 69% to around 72%. For an on the ball player to have a true shooting percentage that high is incredible and is a product of his elite ability to create contact/draw fouls

When his off the dribble ability kept expanding so did my view of him. The way he performed in that Grizzlies game in the fourth should have put people on notice. It’s not the amount he scored. It’s the way he was doing it, with the ball in his hands. Homie was waving off Lebron.

I personally think he's the future of the Lakers. AD in my opinion will be a better player without having to be the #1/#2 option on that team, and if AR takes an even just decent leap this season, he will be very good for their team. LeBron keeps getting older, so having a young guy taking more of the ball-handling off him will be great. He already gets to the line super well, and that's gonna make him a tough matchup when you have to worry about not fouling him whilst playing defense since he can score. Not to mention his flashes of good passing. I personally hope he can get better on defense also, he isn't bad and he definitely hustles, which is better than most of the young players in the league. I loved watching him this season, I was getting hyped watching him play my Nuggets in the postseason. I'm rooting for him, and I think he can take another jump.

I think he's a very good player, solid B+. I remember watching him in the 21-22 season when LA was just sad, but every single time I saw him on the court he was giving 110% and hustling. That translated to him being even better in the 22-23 season. Really looking forward to what the 23-24 season holds for him. If he's averaging 30 minutes with 20+ points as starting PG with Bron at the 3 or 4, that is going to be terrifying for the west.

You must be a Laker fan... His lack of defense was exposed in the WCFs against Denver, and his offense isn't anything exceptionally remarkable. THT was a better player on both sides of the ball and just as heralded two years ago, and where is he now...? Reaves is just another NBA journeyman at best, and it's very unlikely he'll be on an NBA all-star squad in his career. If he starts in the backcourt with D'Angelo Russell for the Lakers this upcoming season, and with Ham still at the helm, the Lakers are in big trouble.

@@garyaugustus690 He was rated one of the best team-defensive players in the NBA! And his plus/minus numbers last year were very good. Check the NBA's advanced stats if you don't believe me. But yeah, his man D could be better, but he hustles constantly, which makes up for a lot. What really sets him apart is his efficiency and sound decision-making. He might not look like a star, but when you look at the statistics and percentages, you're looking at one of the most efficient overall players in the NBA last year. If he keeps doing that, he will be a top 50 guy in the league in terms of value that leads to wins. But his national team performances show that he can hang with all the other young "stars," so there is a chance he might actually have an all-star appearance or two in his future. At the very least, he's a legit NBA starter right now.

He plays hard on D, but isn't quick enough for a lot of the elite guards in the league. But he's long and can make up for it. On offense he isn't going to blow by anyone either, but he uses picks really well, uses his body to shield... He's solid. He's not going to be a star, but he should be able to have a good career. He is smart about his footwork in the paint, pump fakes, and is going to get some FTs. Great find, but some people are going nuts on what he is.

Yeah, every Championship team needs a secondary ball handler. If Lebron is the primary, then Austin is the secondary. And AD is the Big. Then you need 3 and D around them.

If you look at shooting % he's very close to rare Air. He shoots over 50% from the field which, only elite player or bigs can do, while almost shooting 40% (39.8) from three. Austin Reeves (other then bigs) has the best true shooting percentage in the NBA... The next none big behind him is KD! Lakers have him for cheap the next two years and they are STEALING a great player. Sure, he's only scoring 13 ppgs but without russ dominating the ball he averaged 16 while shooting 56 % from the floor and 46% from three while sometimes being the 4th or 5th option. Obviously he's getting good looks because teams dedicate man power to stopping LBJ and AD but, with the limited touches he's getting, he's cashing in.

There is about to be a disgusting, disgraceful, shameful, hateful narrative about him. It’s already started but next year it will be on a completely different level when he is competing for an Allstar spot. That narrative will be “he leads the league in free throws because he is a white American” . This could force the league and Refs to not call fouls that they otherwise would. When you watch Reaves play you notice he is a master at drawing fouls. He constantly changes his speed and angles to get the foul calls. Which isn’t the same as flopping. Flopping is about faking/exaggerating the contact. That isn’t what Reaves is doing, he is creating the contact, not faking it. And he led the league in and 1s per shot attempt for that reason. A flopper rarely gets and 1s because they are exaggerating the contact rather than trying to finish off the shot. The racist bs Jokic went through is nothing compared to what Reaves is about to face. I hope he doesn’t let it mentally destroy him
