After all the initial hype you had for this product, I really appreciate that you gave an honest review - that there are better products for new players. There are a few cards I want in here, but I think I'll stick with singles. Thanks!

Thanks for the review. I’m actually planning on picking this up to teach my kids how to play, so the fairly straightforward nature of the decks is a plus for me.

My plan is to buy this and sleeve it up and give it to my LGS so they can have a way to teach new players, a lot of places did not get the welcome ira decks and I feel that having a 40 card deck with non banned cards would be great for new players to test out. Then I want to help make bulk packages with upgrades to CC or replacements for blitz for both deck types

Excellent and thorough review. My husband and i were looking at the cards and wondered if it was skewed toward Dorinthia. I don’t understand why they pushed this out so fast if James was unhappy with the product? Hopefully they will fix these issues for the next one. Also, for $40-50, I did hope for better quality mat and lore book.

Maybe about the deadline. In this line of work, sometimes you have to put something even if it's not perfect, underperformed etc. Because something has to be delivered to keep the company running. It is really a heartbreaking choices sometimes.

Many Flesh and Blood Players ask the question: Is it worth to buy Classic Battles: Rhinar vs. Dorinthea? Well, if you don't mind to spend 50$ for two Blitz Decks, a cheap paper playmat and an even cheaper lore booklet (which is of course not even hardcover) than yes... but if you have any sense for resonable prices, hell not. Final verdict: A good beginner product to get new players into Flesh and Blood (If you cut the price by 50%) Grade: A (for a price of 20$) B (for a price of 30$) C (for a price of 40$) D (for a price of 50$) F (anything above)

@@RedZoneRogue I hope so 😉 As far as I know, the professor ist very sensitive when it's about prices and accessability. Don't get me wrong: I very like the product, but not for this price. It's like selling Blitz Decks for 25$ instead of 12$. It just feels...wrong.

Also a upside to Blossom of Spring in comparison to Spring Tunic is that you'll never have to worry about forgetting the token trigger.

Honestly they could have just cut out all the crap from this product (lore book, paper playmat, foil packaging) and just made two stand alone blitz decks in the same form as the previous blitz decks. MSRP around $15 each.

To start off with a welcome deck would be awesome but kinda hard to find a welcome deck when stores and collectors keep or snatch them up to hord. But It is what it is. Anywho I'm still in the early stages of deciding where my starting point should be for my teenage kids and i. We are currently just watching fab content on KZfaq atm. So when we make our dive into the game it will be a good experience Our luck with other tcgs in the past hasn't been the most pleasant experience due to companies pulling away from live play, establish players being toxic or just the cost to jump in and compete is just crazy. But the more I see on fab the more I get excited about it. The community seems great and the company seems like they care about their players. This game looks fun and easy to jump into. I was looking at this CLASSIC BATTLES RHINAR VS DORINTHEA product as a starting point and found this video useful. :-)

I can also recommend the Blitz Decks, especially in Multiplayer (called Ultimate Pit Fight). To lower the complexity for the first few games I would suggest to leave out the equipment (just the armor, not the weapons), and add them back, when you know how to play the game. I have mixed feelings about Classic Battles. While I agree that Ira decks and blitz decks are less expensive, you still need two decks to play the game. Ira against Ira is not really great, and the free Ira deck doesn't really match up with any of the other Hero decks (WTR) or Blitz decks. Using two Blitz decks seems like a better choice, although maybe these are too complex for outright beginners? So, perhaps the simplified decks in Classic Battles are a better choice for the beginner. I agree. The $50 MSRP is too high for what they put in the box. For that price, they could have included a real playmat. The $40 price, which seems to be where stores are landing for selling this product is a bit better. I think it is purely subjective if the included playmat and lore book justify the increased cost over the cost of two blitz decks. One final note on packaging. LSS should have made the box something that was permanently reusable. A box with a bottom and a lid that could be used to contain the contents between play sessions.

I think at 40 american burgers MSRP it's an ok deal, at 50 it's a bad one though. I'm glad the studio realizes it's not quiet up to snuff. Also will you and Ian do a joint video where you each suggest upgrades for your particular deck?

Great Video! The lorebook really set me off, beside of the price of 50 bucks.. its just too pricy for new players to pickup when they first see something FaB related imo. The powerlvl of the CB is just off i think.. yellow out for blood, blue sigils... why would they include that even? I kinda like it cause of the new dori cause im a dory fanboy, but i cant be bothered picking up 3 copies just to get my playset of glistening steelblade. I think picking up the ira deck or even one of the preconstructed blitz decks holds almost the exact experience for new players, since there is no explanation to the game at all in the CB. Got 1 copy myself and thats it for me, gonna grab my playset of GS later down the road i guess.

Man... That lore book is not what I was hoping for. I really like a lot of the art on these. I might just pick up some singles. BTW I want beast mode sleeves, playmat, t-shirt.. Like wow. This game is second to none in terms of how it plays, and with how they commission their art.

Ah, glad you did a review! Always excited with your content :3 Well to be honest i think that Duel Deck box could be better. I was waiting for it for weeks but now it seems they could have added better cards. I don't think new players will appreciate foil equipment. They look amazing but they could have added some better stuff. Also only one Majestic (if we don't count the Mentor)? Glistening Steelblade will be a key card for every Dorinthea version so i hoped they would add two of them. There are some other issues like what kind of cards they used for those decks. For Dorinthea there are some with cost 1 give plus 3 damage while you have others that give a go again along with damage. Another example is Raging Onslaught, for Rhinar, that can be replaced by Wounded Bull cause it has a good effect. I will replace some cards I have in my Dorinthea deck with those new ones ( for example Blossom of Spring will replace my Blood Drop Brocade ) but I think it's better to buy them as singles and not the box. So personally i didn't like it that much but it's a good touch. Maybe if two friends want to spend from 20$ each and try the game, if they are not familiar with any marketplaces to get singles, it can be good but still :| And I apologize if my comment was very negative :/

I started to complain about the price and how I thought the lore book would be so much more to help justify the cost and thought no, no I’ll wait to see the full review. Glad I did lol and great to hear they’re planning to upgrade it but if we’re talking a slightly bigger version on better paper or something then I suppose I’ll end up shelling out the money if the price drops just to have the product in my collection (said loosely, I still plan to use it) but I’ll do so begrudgingly

From the looks of it I don't have any complaints about the decks. I'm happy with the amount of new cards within this product, sure would have liked Glistening to be at 2, for Rhinar to get a new spec, for the club to be 1 handed. But on the card front I think they tried to do right by everyone and make a great product. Complaints about glistening and the mentors can be quashed by reprinting it in a supplemental (would like if they announced that sooner than later). Its the lore book that I really can't like. I'd be okay if the lore book just reprinted lore in a nice hard cover with a spine, basically giving them a way to reprint the Lore book lore. I'd be okay if the lore book was small but filled with new lore, a cost effective way to dive into the brute culture, and show Dorinthea's confrontation with Rhinar. We got neither of those. We got a lore book for Dorinthea v Rhinar that doesn't actually have the two fight. I was really excited for this product, more excited than I am for uprising! And this has left me throughly disapointed. I really do hope Classic Battles continues as a product line But I REALLY hope they improve things. Knowing LSS, and hearing that they too are dissapointed, I hope things are on a better course. But I'm still probably gonna wait till release instead of prebuying next time.

@@RedZoneRogue Yeah, I know and I can totally understand that. No hard feelings for LSS. I just don't understand why they haven't reduced the price of the product. They want a premium price for something, what is essentially a Duel Deck with some goodies. I just wanted so badly a good and affordable beginner product to bring new players into the game. As I said, Ira welcome decks are really rare here in Germany and the Blitz Decks are a little bit too complicated for completely new players.

Posting a similar comment I put on a nother video about this product: When I and my friend played these decks (just today) against each other, Rhinar smashed face. Dorinthea could get in a few good hits, but Rhinar swinging for 6+ every turn was hard to deal with. (Forgot this on my other comment: Intimidate was also a pain to deal with.) Maybe we just need to get better at assessment on defence. I know this vid is almost a year old, but I wanted to comment anyway.

I think personally I'd only get it for the Cold Foil Rhinar XD if I had money to spare lol, the new cards are alright but the Brute side seems like it got the short end of the stick overall. I definitely see the lore book problem, a higher quality paperback or hardcover printing would make it much more attractive. It just seems like a first draft product atm, which is a shame.

LSS screwed up what could have been an entry point for what is seen as a daunting game. Curious MtG players see a special mat and several valuable cards in top loader sleeves or cases. This could have been a product existing players can use to introduce the game. New players don’t care about foil cards. They don’t want to spend $50 when there are Blitz packs for $12 and equals half the cost for two to try the game. Lore is appreciated but nobody will know it if they have to go to a website to learn when you could include a booklet. LSS, take a different direction with this and use common cards to keep cost down if you’d like and keep it easier to explain. Keep the lore book and improve it like you said, but ditch the paper mat and just explain where to put the cards in a Rules 101 booklet. A special mat makes the game look less likely for others to try.

I think on a knifes edge is best for viserai with nebula blade. Simply put he is the one who most capitalizes on runechants (which a nebula blade hit will give) and nebula blade is turned on by a NAA which this is a free one.... I get the NAA helps briar make embodiments but I think it will help vis abit more

"FREE" Ira welcome decks? lol I've never seen a free one in my life, nor have they been in stock at any of my LGSs. If they were in stock, they were silently sold for $50+ (OG decks) or $25+ for (Young Hero) online. If you are a new player then this can be good for you to show you how the arena works visually but that's really about it. The only thing you are actually paying for are the decks and those would be $25 a piece at $50 total. Since the CF aren't really collectable at this point, in this product, it should have been $34.99 or even $39.99 at most. These decks are not meant for power (for those complaining about the cards included). It's more so for those wanting to get into the game but at the same time, the price will turn off new players. There are a lot of discrepancies in this product but for me, I'll still buy one or two to support the game.

I've been to a couple LGSs here in Portland that have the free Ira decks. If your lgs is selling them then you may want to consider reporting them to LSS as they are 100% supposed to be free.

@@RedZoneRogue I think the main problem with the Ira Welcome Decks, especially here in Europe, is that the LGSs have no or not enough of them. If plenty of them would be accessible for every interested player, then they wouldn‘t be sold for these prices.

@@Xadrian1000 ah yeah I can't speak to Europe Distribution since I'm from the US and don't really know what the situation is like over there. I hope that once History Pack 1 launches over there in all of the new languages they also heavily ramp up the Ira Welcome Deck production too. Every store that carries FAB should have a backstock of Ira decks to give out for free to interested people

@@RedZoneRogue yeah there is little to no stock of Ira decks here. I’m neighbors with Stephen and out of the 4 stores in my immediate area that carry FAB, none have had or are getting Ira decks from what they tell me. So I’ve never gotten one to this day. Plenty of packs and boxes but never an Ira deck. The supply isn’t always there. Plus, when the game took off, the small LGSs held back stock to sell at higher prices online. I reported at least 1 store but they keep getting the product so it doesn’t look like anything happened or that it was looked into. They held back cases of CRU 1st and sold them online at like $2k a box. They still have a CRU armory kit because the owner doesn’t know how to get rid of it since his “attempt” at starting play in-store wasn’t accepted with his customers. It’s all a crap show here. Unless I want to drive about 45min just to play a few games up at Reapers.

Will I buy one? Yes, it's a decent book shelf item that can be used for casual kitchen table play. Will I buy two? Ehh... Maybe, but given that they give a full blitz playset of most cards and I don't play dori in classic, not any time soon. If I have the cash and see a second one, I'd consider it.

I love this product but there's definitely room for improvement. I wish the Rhinar deck was stronger to be a bit more balanced with the Dorinthea deck. I wish the lorebook was hard cover and a bit bigger. I wish there was 1 or 2 more chase cards in the box and just slightly stronger cards in general in the 2 decks. Also, why wasn't there any like basic rule book in this product? Seems like a no brainer to put that in a product aimed at new players.

I wonder what that means, that the higher-ups at LSS weren't satisfied with how this product turned out. Weren't they the ones that gave it the green light? I mean, isn't it standard to do a batch of mock-ups/samples before going into full production? Or are they not involved in that process...? Personally, I was looking forward to the lore book but that's more of a lore manual. It's like the size of a Yu-Gi-Oh rule manual. Rather disappointing. If I can find it for around $40-ish that'd be great cause the cost of s&h would put it back on par with the MSRP in the end. Haha.

I know they got samples but I think production may have been too far along to change it. It also might just be costly to delay things? And yeah the lore booklet is literally worse than my old L5R how to play manual (which also had a huge art/lore section) and came in a $15 starter from over 20 years ago ☠️ fingers crossed the next one is much better 🤞

i bought it and hopped right into the story book, was extreme.y disappointed when I realized it was just a copy paste of both heroes story section on the website, was expecting a new story of dorinthea actually fighting rhinar

And that‘s why I don‘t understand, why the lore booklet isn‘t hardcover. When I just want to know the lore I can literally read everything on their website, but if I want something fancy for my shelf, I want a hardcover book. No one on the whole world need this booklet, which is essentialy a printed out internet article.

TLDR: While the cost of the product is high, and therefore contentious, without its many and varied features (i.e., “bells and whistles”), it might not appeal to enough players to be viable in the market. There is a point of view on this product (or any product, really) that you want to appeal to the broadest audience possible to maximize the number of units sold. From a manufacturing cost perspective, unit volume drives the per unit cost down, making the product cheaper and more profitable overall. In so far as this product appeals to a range of players (from new to entrenched), it could be considered successful in that one regard. However, it seems that broad appeal comes at a price. Literally. In the final accounting, this product may be seen as success to LSS and/or retailers simply because the number of units sold and the high price point will be enough to justify its existence. However, I think it will suffer in perception because it is not target to a specific set of players. The lack of focus to any one target player segment means there are superfluous “features” to the product that the other player segments won’t value as highly (or at all) and would prefer that they were not included in the product so as to make it cheaper. Without knowing the specifics of the production and distribution costs, it’s hard to really say if it was the right choice or not to include so many extras. But, given the price point of other comparable products (e.g. blitz decks), it’s probably fair to say that a more stripped down product, focused purely on new players could have been produced more cheaply. Whether it would have appealed to enough players is the question. Without the new cards, how many fewer units would have been sold? Same question for the cold foils and the lore book. What did those contribute to sales? In other words, without the bells and whistles, who would have actually bought this product? Just new players? That’s a pretty small sliver of the market. It could easily have failed if it was underproduced, as well. In the end, it may have been the safer bet to appeal to the broadest number of players.
