A frequent question I receive from my viewers is "How good is College Tennis?" So in today’s video, I explain the level of play, for both the Men’s and Women’s NCAA Division 1 Tennis Programs. I also talk about D2, D3, NAIA and NCJAA.

After your video about Safin's journey to the D1 NCAA Program, I wondered what all these mean. I searched but did not get much. Now, you have a video on this😀 This channel is great ... actually Nick is just GREAT!👍👍

Great video as always. Curious about the percentage of players on the lower level D1 teams that are on full scholarship as opposed to being walk-ons who have to pay their own way through school.

Hey!! NJCAA coach here. Great info in this video! My first and second singles are an 11 and 10 UTR respectively, then my 3rd and fourth are somewhere between 5-7, followed by my 5th-6th being absolutely new players. This is very common in NJCAA. The first and second singles can be very strong tennis from previously nationally ranked juniors that had trouble with school in the past.

Here are some players that are or have been ranked in the ATP top 100 that played D1 tennis which is generally very strong, and you can compare it to a triple A in baseball. Cam Norrie (TCU) ranked 12, Joe Salisbury (Memphis) who reached the #1 in the world in doubles with Rajev Ram (Illinois), Kevin Anderson(Illinois), John Inner (Georgia), Marcos Giron, McKenzie McDonald, Maxine Cressy (UCLA), Ben Shelton(Florida), Nuno Borges (Mississippi State), C. Eubanks (Georgia Tech), If you go into the top 200 there are a ton of former D1 players like Borna Gojo ( Wake Forrest) and Ryan Peniston (Memphis) and a ton of other players ranked into the top 300 in the world. D1 is super strong and there are a ton of high level players not only from the U S of course, but the best juniors from all over the world come to play here as well.

I once trained with a guy who was a former NAIA player. His UTR peaked around 14. I always wondered how on earth he played in NAIA instead of playing D1 at a good program.

To play D1 you need to start college in a time period of 1 year after graduating from high school. I started way after my high school degree and I had troubles even getting eligible for the NAIA

Agree with you on the most part but I feel a little of a diss against d2, d3 and NAIA players. I've met many players who for education purposes prefer to go to lower division school and that could steamroller over so-called good D1 players. However, I can say that most high level players never say "I am a D1 or whatever level player" as it makes them look like dbags

I'm 26 and i just recently started college . I played tennis all my life .People have seen me play and told me i can compete against D1 players ( probably not the elite level). Can i still play college tennis? or Im too old.
@gavinsmith8855

Too old, most if not all coaches wouldn’t consider it. And I’d say a baseline for D1 tennis you’re looking at a minimum 10.5-11 UTR to even get on a roster.

If the NCAA would limit the number of non-citizen players on tennis teams, the overall level would drop, but the prospects for developing better US players would increase dramatically. Today, a large majority of American college tennis team rosters are jam-packed with foreign players. Many rosters have only non-citizen players. Even though tennis teams do not produce revenue for their schools, coaches want to win so they recruit overseas where tennis players are often better (usually older, some with semi-pro experience) than their counterpart Americans. However, these imports don't turn pro, either. They get a US college education, often with US taxpayer support, then take their diploma back to their native country. At the same time, promising 17 and 18 year old American juniors are shut out of college tennis. Lose-lose for the US.

Complete agreement here Jim. it is a travesty and a slap in the face to every taxpaying family when their child is denied an opportunity to play on a college team because that coach cherry picked a player who isn’t even a citizen.

Good. Like Nick said, high level American tennis players will find a tennis home in college, it just might not be in the very best schools. But poor American exceptionalist poopoos are gonna cry 😭😭😭 aww I feel so bad, maybe you should shut out foreigners so you feel better ❤️‍🩹😘

@@ben1147 Why should American tax dollars fund mostly obscure tennis programs that are heavily made up of foreigners who almost always go back home when they've had their excellent American education?

This isn’t really true. The promising us tennis players do make it on high level d1 schools. They’re just aren’t many. But that has nothing to do with nationals.
