The owner brought over his brand new 2023 Gibson Les Paul Tribute guitar in Satin honeyburst last week. He wanted me to check the setup, change the strings and swap out the bridge pickup. I thought this would be a good opportunity to check out just how good the factory setup is right from Gibson since the owner had not done anything to the guitar since purchasing it. Watch the video to find out - enjoy!

It's honestly refreshing to hear a good news story about Gibson quality control.

Same here. I love seeing them. However...I still curse myself for not forcing myself to learn right-handed, 30 years ago. It sucks not being able to try other ppl's instruments..or have many off-the-shelf options when shopping at a store. I have even ordered a custom guitar and waited almost 2 years for it...and ended up not really liking it when it arrived. It would have been nice to try one out before ordering it. But there aren't many lefthanded Mosrites floating around to test out on the east coast of Canada. Hehe. Being a lefthanded guitar player is a curse.

setups from high end manufacturers, like Gibson, Martin, Fender, etc..., are commonly the last step in production line quality control before packaging and shipment. It's logical to assume that all guitars, aside from custom orders, that pass through this stage will all get the same setup procedure (depending on company, make and model). Some guitars will fail at setup by the time they reach the customer due to factors regarding either initial manufacturing, temperature changes that impact wood & finishes, and human error. This is true for all products made, and always has been. Perfection doesn't exist, but acknowledging and correcting errors to reduce them does

Thank you for great video! So 5/64 (1.98mm) and 4/64 (1.58mm) is a low/medium action?

Thanks for sharing, looking forward to the set up video...going to need to reference this soon for my Les Paul. Is there any guidance/tolerance/range of how high/low the bridge posts should generally be?

Not really - just that the strings dont touch the back of the bridge and that there is enough break angle for the strings

I have a lefty 22 Tribute..and it needed a setup as soon as I got it. Even tho the factory checklist in the bag said that had been setup at the factory, it was a little wonky. However, I don't blame Gibson or the guy who did the factory setup. I blame it on the fact that lefthanded guitars aren't overly common and assume that Gibson have a guy doing lefty setups. You can set up a guitar perfectly to spec..but if u can't test your work, how do u know it is perfect. Hehe.

Yes, I have a problem. Im a guitar junkie (and gear). Why shouldn't I be. I have thousands of hours invested in learning an instrument that, at first, I thought was impossible. For you people that want to learn and are big time discouraged. Dont quit. Maybe your action is so high that nobody can play it. Have a luither set it up before you throw in the towel. But dont throw the towel in. Stick with it. Then you have an awesome hobby or even a job for life. You will eventually get it. You will never get it if you quit. It's like you're a superhero once you learn your way around the old fretboard. Just hitting an E cord on a tube amp all distortioned out. I feel like a God. It's so satisfying. Enough of that. I really love my Tribute. I have had countless Gibson L.P.s, and the Tribute is the real deal. Just wanted to get that out of the way. I like the stop bar slammed as low as it can go to the body. I think it sounds warmer and has more sustain. But it's probably a placebo effect. And hence I had the same problem as this good sir is having. What i did, and again, I truly believe this also helps with the sustain and the warmth of a true Gibson Les Paul. I use the wrap around method. No, im not talking about my old lady. Lol. You slam the stop tail all the way down and wrap the strings over the tail piece. It still gives you good enough break angle, and you get what i was referring to. And it's old school cool. I know there has been a lot of talk about the prices going up and up. The quality control isn't up to par. I have never had an issue with the quality control. So i guess im lucky. And to get your hands on the real deal, L. P. for half the price because there is no binding on it. That is awesome. Instead of keeping it at home, you can actually gig with it and not have to worry about your lifes savings. In my humble opinion and playing for over 4 decades. Gibsons are the best. Past, present, and hopefully the future. PEACE

To check intonation properly the guitar must not be lying flat but in the upright playing position.
@ManotickGuitarTech

You can check it either way as long as you don't the same way each time.

Am I the only person on the planet who uses a coin (quarter) to adjust the stop bar tailpiece? Please tell me I’m not alone. $30 screwdriver and a rag… The best tool for that adjustment is probably in your pocket or under the seat of your car.
