Today I want to shed a light on a highly underrated part of German football history: East Germany. Wait, what is (was) East Germany? Which famous players come from there? And who's the best? I'll answer all those questions & bring light into the darkness in this video. 💡

The current Germany youth development system is actually very much based on the East German model created by Matthias Sammer in 2006. And without a doubt it has been very successful as it helped create the generation that won the World Cup in 2014. Btw I'm loving these football videos. Keep up the great content.

Robert Enke, definetily an East-German who wasnt the best but deserves some recognition. Heard of him in the Leno video and he popped up as an east-german footballer. So I'm giving him a shout.

Wow, what a great video! As a life long BVB fan, Sammer has to be my favourite East German. But it’s great to see players like Ulf Kirsten and Bernd Schneider getting some recognition. Great players. I had a soft spot for that early 2000s Leverkusen team. And I honestly had no idea that Toni Kroos was East German! Keep up the good work!

I would've also included Carsten Jancker who had a great spell with Bayern Munich winning the Champions League and also played for the runner-up Germany team in the 2002 World Cup.

The Easts team was Professional in all but name, like all Eastern Bloc States, Athletes were State Sponsored Athletes, while they werent great at Full International Level, they had a decent side at Olympic Level... There was so much hunger a post-1974 rematch, but apparantly the East German Government would not entertain the idea, as they wanted to keep hold of there '100%' record against the West

I think you mean the current Berlin Bundesliga clubs? Hertha BSC is a West German club. Union Berlin is an East German Club.
