Kyle Larson has done it! He has become a NASCAR Cup Series champion. The season that he did this with is also one of the greatest in recent memory and has many wondering what will come next. So today I want to look more in depth as to just how good Kyle Larson has performed in 2021 and see if it is as good or even better than many think it is. @@dexterhochstetler3727 I'm okay with the way points are given out, including the the stages, my issue personally is the playoff format. I think it should be like every other kind of racing where from race 1 to the last you accumulate points and most points at the end is your champion

As much as I agree Larson is a great driver and in many different forms of racing. I think hyping him up to be on the same level as Mario andretti might be a stretch. Mario was a superstar in almost every major racing series. And scored great accomplishments in Nascar, Indy car, and F1. Mario proved he was one of the best against the best in the world no matter what the stage was. And I don't want to take away from Larson but I'd like to see him race in an Indy 500 or in F1 before I jump on the "he's as good as Mario" ship. Again I think Larson is a great driver but I think he still has alot to prove before he can be considered in the same conversation as Mario.

@NolanEP I agree as I said I think Larson is a great driver, and I no way ment to disrespect his accomplishments in every series he's ran in. But in my opinion (yes I know it's just an opinion and not fact so take it for whatever it's worth) Mario andrettis accomplishments weigh more then what Larson has done so far. Larson is still driving however and can still prove he deserves the right to be undisputedly considered in the same tier as Mario. Time is the difference. Mario has had his time and all his accomplishments are completed, Larson still has time to prove more and do more. But for me he still has to prove it.

@@DSHalfDemon see that’s where I disagree, just because a form of racing is more well known, doesn’t make it better or worse than another form. I’ll go with the latemodel sprint car thing, some of the best latemodel drivers in the country jump in spring cars and struggle, same with sprint drivers to Latemodels. I’ve seen Kyle Larson win NASCAR, 410 winged sprints, USAC non wing sprints, Super latemodels, midgets. Dirt racing will never get the credit it deserves. Which I do agree with you on the Indy and f1, when it comes to dirt there’s a lot of skill it takes to do, just for the fact many NASCAR drivers have tried and have been very mediocre. He’s 29, I would bet he ends up getting many opportunities in many different formats of racing before he’s done

@NolanEP I'm a Kyle Larson fan, and I agree that he's one of the greatest, but NASCAR is much closer to dirt racing than F1/Indycar. Open wheel cars have very high downforce and require the driver to adapt to an extremely different driving style. Andretti was more of a jack of all trades while Larson is extremely dominant on ovals with lower downforce vehicles. Right now, Kyle might be the best oval driver ever, but in order to surpass Andretti as the driver who could do it all, I think he would have to succeed in high profile races in open wheel racing and Le Mans. I think he can do it and I hope he does, but we will have to see :)

@@BoleDaPole nobody is holding bubba Wallace back and in fact they are catering to him so what’s his problem? Where’s his 10 win season and tittle? One luck win on a rained out plate race. He is probably driving the best funded car in nascar between Toyota, Hamlin, Michael Jordan and the sponsors pouting every penny they can into the car . Larson whipped all their asses with a car primarily self funded by Rick Hendrick 🤔 . Fans don’t want to see drivers riding around just for the sake of affirmative action. It didn’t work for Danica Patrick either. Fans want to see results. The more you win the more fans you get in racing, that’s just how it works. You don’t get fans by looking for sympathy or playing the minority cards. It never worked and never will.

Larson has shown he can drive any car on any surface and on any track configuration. And still win. I think his best is yet to come.

@@gabingston3430 Probably poorly, at first. He'd need some time to acclimate to the cars, as they're extremely different to everything else he's driven (just look at Jimmie's IndyCar season). No doubt he'd be quick as hell with some time though

IMO the greatest comeback ever in NASCAR and definitely one of the greatest ever in motorsports period. Everyone expected to see the guy get a win at top, but no instead he created one of the most dominant years ever in NASCAR history. He prevailed from what was impossible to think all of what he did would work out, and won his first championship. I have always been for Larson, I don’t care if he won and entire year and won every race of that year, I’m a diehard Larson fan.

I’ve been a Larson fan as well since way before Cup. The dude is the real deal. I wish he could line up again Earnhardt and Martin and Bill Elliott etc. literally throw him in a race with the drivers from 98. He would run right with them.

I think people don't realize that all the other drivers who won 10 or more races in a year are literal HOF's, champions and GOATS. So Kyle doing this it could be the start of something great.

10 wins in a single season is one of the hardest accomplishments for any driver, for obvious reasons. 13 is the gold standard of course.

I'm starting to think people forgot about how Larson raced before the 2021 season. in 2019 he was an edge of the top ten driver but got a little better in the playoffs finishing 6th. In 2018 Larson was 9th. 2017: 8th, 2016: 9th, 2015: 18th 2014: 17th. Before the season I was expecting Larson to be an 8th place driver at best because of rust and stress. I completely underestimated him but this was an INSANE season. Edit: *I'm very excited to see how Larson will execute the 2022 season*

Yeah, I feel like, if you look back at his history, seeing how he was running consistently 10th, you realize that he's a top 4 driver with top-of-the-line equipment like he now has at HMS. Make you wonder just how good someone like Dillon or Reddick would be in a quality ride.

Can you imagine if he hadn't had issues at those other tracks where he finished 2nd this year? He'd have what 16 wins? And it's not that hard to believe the he could have done it if a couple things had just been different. A bad pit call and a blown tire on last lap are two that cost him a win that I can recall at 2 races. And all I can think is how long was CGR holding Larson back? I think the reign of Larson domination is upon us. I just hope he doesn't become as disliked as JJ and even Gordon during their prime. People really didn't like either when they were winning. And Larson is just getting started... The other NASCAR drivers are just going to be on the track because he likes passing other people. 😂

Dude what are you talking about Jimmie Johnsons 07 season is not in the conversation at all Jeff Gordon blew him out of the water that season stats wise. Gordon's 96,97,98 seasons are all more impressive in fact its ridiculous we even need to question this with Jeff being the only guy to do it multiple times in a row. Imagine winning 33 races in 3 seasons.

keep in mind, most of the laps Larson led were at intermediates and road courses where there's less laps in those races than there were in the short tracks he was average at, so if you look at his laps led in terms of percentage of each race, it's well above 2017 Truex, 2020 Harvick, and likely on the level of 1998 Gordon.

He actually tops all 3 of them on a percentage basis. Larson led 28.08% of laps ran. Only one driver since 1990 has a higher percentage: Rusty Wallace in 1993 led 2860 laps or 28.59% of all laps ran in '93.

@@flyingpizza98 And what is scary, in 1993, I believe they still ran 500 laps at Dover maybe and more laps at Rockingham too. Also, they ran the Carousel at Sonoma for 95 laps at least, I believe, and Loudon was just one race like now at one less lap.

@@flyingpizza98 The % of laps would account for that, I believe. The Carousel at Sonoma adds probably 3/10ths of a mile to that lap and reduced it to 95 laps or so, I think.

We’ll chase probably would have done it if Larson didn’t come along. He had 4 runner ups to Kyle Larson and pissed off Kevin Harvick. Happy he got in the final 4 but Larson earned it

Chase had just as good a season as last year. The only difference is that some of the races he would have won, Larson was racing

I think Larsons 2021 season was immaculate. He easily could've tied Gordon's 13 wins had he not been unlucky at Pocono and Atlanta and the rain at CotA. Even all that aside his dominance this season simply cannot be denied. So, do not be surprised if we see him the the final 4 and possibly returning as champion on a regular basis in the next 5 years. All subject to how the Next Gen cars perform of course.

I’ve been a NASCAR fan since 1973 and during that time I’ve had 4 favorite drivers. David Pearson Dale Earnhardt Dale Earnhardt Jr. Kyle Larson Seeing my favorite driver win the championship for the first time since Earnhardt in 94 was priceless, awesome season!🏁🏁🏁🏁

In Larsons defense... he did this with a new team and a new crew chief... he won 9 out of the last 22 races... so as amazing as Larson was it took him 14 races to really get on track..

During his suspension year he had one of the greatest dirt track seasons of all time. As a sprint car fan he's my favorite driver. He won some of the biggest races of the year this year as well. All hail King Kyle!

I also feel like it needs to be mentioned more. Larsons laps led record for 36 races is VERY impressive. Larson ran 9,000 laps even. Jeff Gordon in 2001 ran 10,638 laps. Larson led more with less laps to work with.

I always had Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Tony Stewart as the best all around drivers in NASCAR history. I don't think it's far fetched any longer to put Kyle Larson in the conversation of that group. Kyle Busch had the potential to.

As a Dillion fan I would say Larson is hell of a lot better. Austin can be a top driver the only down side of his racing is that he is not aggressive at all. He lets people pass him like it’s nothing. But when there’s a opening he takes it but in nascar there rarely is

NASCAR on Fox said it was gonna be the best season ever, I think the season delivered! 15 different winners and a comeback and historical championship finish to cap it all off. I think it’s easy to say it’s arguably one of if not the best season ever.

I’d say it’s one of the best I’ve seen in my 15 years of watching nascar. Expect the Bristol dirt track that didn’t do anything for me and COTA sucked with the rain. But besides that one of the best seasons I’ve watched

Larson with 10 wins average of 9.1, and he still have major unlucky. Like you said block by Blaney teammates in Atlanta, raining take his victory in Cota (Elliott would pit), Nascar gave Kyle Busch a win in Kansas on his birthday (on a bizarre yellow), the mess take his dominant win Indianapolis, Joe Gibbs out strategy HMS in Darlington (he almost get) and Vegas. And have a crash very early on dirt bristol where he was favorite, on a move by Bell where he could do nothing. Incredible...

Larson Made a huge mistake, atoned for it, and became a better man. Good on Hendricks for giving him a second chance. I don’t think he’s gonna have any trouble finding sponsorship going forward.

Mr. H is a good man... He helps people who help themselves. I hated to see Kyle get fired from Ganassi but unfortunately I do see now he did what he was really forced to do. Glad to see Kyle get past all the stigma of an honest fuck up

Kyle Larson's Playoff run in 2021 was just as dominant as Martin Truex Jr's Playoff run in 2017 While Larson had more wins in 2021 than MTJ in 2017 (5 > 4) MTJ had more Top 5s (9 > 6), more Top 10s (9 > 8) and a better Average Finish (4.3 > 7.4)

I watched Kyle Larson race dirt tracks all over the Midwest in person and he was always hugging the wall and sometimes grinding the wall T always raced on the highest line of the track which let you maintain the highest speed everybody I set next to you from town to town knew him and seen how he was racing he was faster because he took the outside line where he could maintain the highest speed and everybody and every time before he ever went to NASCAR said if he ever makes its own NASCAR he will be a champ multiple times he just needs a ride

The saying everything happens for a reason certainly applies here. Had Larson not lost his ride and be exiled this may have never happened. For everyone that had written him off after the NASCAR ban its a BIG F U. The kid always had the talent he always had the skill hats off to Mr. H for believing in him fighting for him to come back and kick NASCAR in the ass.

Dude won 53 Sprint car features while exiled. Dude could make plenty on Sprint Cars alone but Larson will challenge the highest forms of motorsports.

I may only be a rookie race fan but seeing this season in front of my eyes also shows domination, drama, and a moment that Larson used his second chance wisely and won the championship as a sign of redemption. He's a heck of a trooper!

My dad(Jeff Gordon fan) and I(Jimmie Johnson fan) said for years if Kyle Larson were to step foot at Hendrick Motorsports, he’d win just like Jeff and Jimmie did. After the Homestead race earlier this year, I remember somebody reported Larson said the HMS cars run smoother than the Ganassi cars. That’s when I knew he would win 5 races. Little did we know he’d win twice that much. Seeing how Hendrick jumped out front with the Gen 5 and Gen 6 in 2007-2009 and 2013-2015 respectively along with Chad Knaus moving up, it’s wouldn’t surprise me to see Larson win multiple championships.

The skill level of NASCAR racers are just Superior. Time and again formula One racers try to get in and they always lose or the ones that have tried except for Tony Stewart. But it is like comparing a bumblebee to a mosquito. There's no room for prestige when there's gas and oil on the track

I paused at 3:22, go back to 3:02. Early season he should've won more. Atlanta he led the whole damn race but Blaney barely caught him on old tires. He had a couple others early season where he led every damn lap, but didn't win. That's where the top 5s, top 10s emerged. Scary thought is, they were just learning how to win.. My thought (early season) was how do you dominate week in, week out and lose. WELL, they figured it out. Kyle's post race at the roval and I believe Bristol tell a story of sorts. Both times he said "I didn't expect to win." Imagine that compared to most winners post race; "Guys worked really hard, this is a really fast (sponsor)(make), after the restart got great track position and made the most of it!" Kyle layed out everything that went wrong and they still won. Huge red flag to the competition, mainly looking at the #9. They've figured out something that you haven't

This was the first season of NASCAR I've watched since junior stopped racing at my dad stopped watching and I was really excited about it I really got that spark again to enjoy watching the races it may have helped that I'm old enough to drink beer now and I really enjoy cooking beer brats day off for racing but I also got my girlfriend in the watching it with me so I really enjoyed this season and I think this was damn good season to decide to watch again and I look forward to next year

I really got 2001 Jeff Gordon season vibes from Larson's dominant season. Have to say what a driver. I'm not gonna brush up on "the incident" but I do remember hearing from fans before that he just needed a little bit of better equipment he'd be a complete driver especially his driving style.

And let's not forget... Kansas 1 went south after he and Blaney were mid-pack and trying to go forward, and at the Daytona road course he was gaining on the leader before he piled it into the wall overdriving a turn, and had a top 5 going before being spun at Road America toward the end.

As many times as we saw Larson wheeling the Schlitz outta that 42 car and still coming up short while putting on a helluva show, I cant say I'm too surprised at what we saw this season, but WoW, who'd a thought we'd see composed dominance like that. I'm so happy to see Larson in one year making up for and then some all the times he came up short in the Ganassi car, and not to mention the fact that he basically kicked off the season cold with a whole new operation.

Honestly his style was so smooth and so wanted to see him be competitive in the Bristol dirt race but honestly he was damn good , the roval went from last due to battery issues and went on to win the race, that for me showcases talent as other drivers who have less severe issues with the car would’ve quit. If they bring back the seat swap between NASCAR and F1 like Jeff Gordon and Juan Pablo Montoya (one of my favorite drivers of all time even though the jet dryer incident still perplexed me) did in 2001 and Jimmie Johnson and Fernando Alonso just to see him and my favorite F1 driver Esteban Ocon swap seats and see him in my favorite f1 team.
