I see a lot of videos of baby goths re-creating the glory days that they were born well after. Let me tell you… I started high school in 1996 and We didn’t contour or use eyeshadow or even think about our eyelashes or brows. We used three products if not less and we did it badly because no one had KZfaq to learn by.
You saw club goths wearing the full white make up or corpse paint… But this is what us everyday suburban Teenagers did to look super cool. extra points if you used a lighter to bring your wet and wild eyeliner back to life.
It’s fun to recreate looks from the past with a modern twist… but I assure you, you young guns are doing it with way more skills and way more tools.

This is it. This is the most accurate one. And boy does it hurt. Remember trying to use that shitty liner but there'd be one spot that the wood was still on and you'd scrape it all along your eye? I do. ☹️

Ugh, yeah. Alt/goth just feels like a label to me in a lot of cases lately, and not one that feels very freeing. People try to peg me into that box IRL a lot and I'm like look dude. I'm not goth. Horror movies bore me to death. I don't accessorize a ton. I have exactly one tattoo and one piercing. I only listen to industrial music which isn't even goth. Absolutely EMBARRASSING. People call me goth in front of others and I'm so quick to shut it down! Imposter syndrome is huge. I take inspiration, but don't identify and I STILL feel like a fake! What even is that? That was an attempt at commiseration. Hope I didn't hijack the thread. Imposter syndrome SUCKS!

This is actually correct, i've seen so many try to recreate it and fail so badly, the only way to recreate it correctly is if you actually were there. We didn't have all the stuff we have now, our entire make up consisted of a lipstick, a black eyeliner and a mascara.

I remember that being totally true, and now we have tons of options. However, I still feel like companies and corporations are overdoing it, I think there are too many options now because most of them do the same thing but cost different (expensive) prices and have different names just to fool people. I also believe that if women could look good back then without having 10 layers of things on their face at a time, then there's no reason that shouldn't still be possible today. 🤷‍♀️

@@trophyscene5015 True, there's just too much options in everything, like how many blushes does a person need. I've never worn foundation, I tried it once and don't like how it feels on my face, I only wear eye makeup and lipstick, bit of blush and highlighter, but my makeup is basic I only buy when I run out of something. Over consuming makeup started when KZfaq beauty influencers were reviewing different makeup every week making out people needed every new palette, even now brands are putting out new stuff every month, there's no need for it. Makeup is meant to enhance beauty not be slathered on.

Sometimes black mascara run the brush under water let drip into the sucretes tin then add black chalk n chapstick. My little sister thought the eye liner was a color pencil n ruined it. Sooo "map color" or yellow number two pencil - get lots of mascara on the brush and dip the pencil in and viola --eye liner. Black chalk finely ground dumped in clear nail polish or top coat. Mascara brush scrapped across the top of nail polish bottle. Mixed messy but do able. Dark blues n red mixed together sometimes made black nail polish but they had to be same brands of nail polish or it mixed cruddy n often separated in the bottle. Wow brings back memories and so many of my sister n mine "experiments" dad finally broke down and bought us the real stuff when we created our own and made it look good!!

Black eyeshadow was nowhere to find ever! I still have mine from the 90's! Don't use it anymore but can't get myself to throw it out ever!

Really? Because I saw black CoverGirl eyeshadow singles at Walmart when I was a teen.

Manic panic did a line of shadows. Colours were amazing. Wish I still had mine. Onlu ever saw it in one shop in Toronto and never again. A lovely red before we could get red for that

As a 90s teen, this brought back memories. And removing all that eye liner with Noxema and a wash cloth, leaving your face red and raw.

Yes, the Noxema and sometimes Sea Breeze, when you could afford it lol. Always made my eyes tear up

This is EXACTLY how I did my makeup as a mall goth in the year 2001, with eyeliner from the dollar store. I had a black one, a navy blue one and a deep forest green one. They hurt, and I hated that wooden scraping on my eyelids, but I looked exactly how I wanted to look, so there :)

You were supposed to take out your trusty lighter and melt it first! 😂

I was going to mention....the navy on the indie bottom lip makes the whites pop and eyes look bigger. The green was a beautiful bonus, mine was a mallard duck tealy green. That needed blending over the smudged black. Under bottom lashes for sure. Top liner too but has to be close to the lashes, bit if smudge. Happy to see someone other than me figured out adding the right colors (even a metallic plum shadow, play with to see what works for you). These are the true colors of death. 😊 Loose face powder is better than cake,/ compressed powder. Compressed if you want the white face clown look. I prefer the porcelain look. Love this clip....😊❤

One of the best parts of this makeup routine is that you needn't be careful or precise while applying your mascara. In fact, that line of mascara you'd inevitably get just above the lashline often went harder (was a deeper black) than that 99 cent Wet n Wild liner. Not to mention if you really went in with the mascara it would fill in the lashline, and I'm telling you your liner will, to this day, never look better.
