The Tabernacle Choir and the Orchestra at Temple Square present folk hymn "How Great Thou Art" with lyrics by Stuart K. Hine and arranged by Nathan Hofheins.
Lyrics:
O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the works thy hands have made,
I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder,
Thy pow'r thru-out the universe displayed;
When thru the woods and forest glades I wander,
and hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees,
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur
And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze.
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee,
How great thou art! How great thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee,
How great thou art! How great thou art!
And when I think that God, his Son not sparing,
Sent him to die, I scarce can take it in,
That on the cross my burden gladly bearing
He bled and died to take away my sin,
When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation,
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then shall I bow in humble adoration.
And there proclaim, "My God, how great thou art!"
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee,
How great thou art! How great thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee,
How great thou art! How great thou art!
How great thou art!

I am saddened that the Swedish man who wrote the words receives no credit. His name was Bobert. He had just finished missionary school and was about to be shipped overseas on his first assignment. He was walking along ths shore in Southern Sweden and a powerful storm overtook him. He stood in the rain and thought "Lord how great Thou art. He rushed to his room and turned that thought into a poem. Within few weeks the words were put to an old local folk tune. An Amercan heard it in the Ukraine where Bobert had been a missionary and translated Bobert's poem almost literally. Via the Billy Graham Crusades, George Beverley Shae made it a popular hit. The young missionary was lost in history. I sang the song at my son's wedding in Sweden even though he snd I are Aussies. I sang the first verse and chorus in English and then in Swedish. In Swedish it is O Store Gud.

My mother would sing this every Christmas before we ate dinner. She sang like an angel, even at 90 years old...she passed Oct. 2022, but I still hear her sing every Christmas. I will miss her until we meet again in the glory God. I'm confident whatever choir is in heaven, my Mother is singing with them.

This is one of the hymns my young son chose for his funeral, every time I hear it, makes me cry with joy, knowing that my son believes in Christ and that he is dueling with our Savior, this knowledge that someday will be reunited with our loved one, makes the wait glorious!

Sorry to hear that. I'm assuming that your mother was saved. Therefore, she's in Heaven. I wish that you could come to the saving grace of Jesus Christ & understand God's plan of salvation, so that you can go to Heaven, too, & see your mom again one day. Please seek God so that you can see your mom again. I'm going to pray for you & this situation. I don't know you, but I care. God is real, & I can prove it! Understand that I'm not trying to push anything off on you, I just felt the need to share my feelings & speak my peace. That's all. Thank you for that.

I think it’s because this version lacked power. I don’t really understand why he had them singing in subdued tones. This message be declared among the nations, much much much more powerful than song here. It was like they were whispering. I mean I really honestly don’t get this interpretation. It just don’t make sense. Especially given the power of the atmosphere, a band and whole choir.

He loves us all, and suffered to provide us a way to come back to live with Him. He’s freed us from the suffering of our sins. My soul truly sings of his Greatness.

I was listening to some other old religious songs, "Going Home", "Down in the River to Pray", etc., getting all wistful remembering those who are no longer here, Mom and Dad, uncles and aunts, a brother, many close and dear friends, when this video popped up. My father was not a particularly religious man, although he said several times that "Someone upstairs was looking out for him" (he had been a Naval Aviator from 1940 -1964 and had many close calls). "How Great Thou Art" was my father's favorite religious song. He used to sing it while walking around the house. Kinda coincidental that his favorite song should just pop up randomly like that. Can't help but wonder if he's talking to me. Miss you too, Dad.

Beautiful, as always. Did I ever mention how I just LOVE the diversity my Church has in its Choir & Orchestra alone? Whether ur male, female, tall, short, skinny, chunky, younger, older, middle-aged, Caucasian, Afro-American, Asian-American, ANYONE within the Church can join, just like ANYONE from ANY faith is welcome to our Sunday services! I love how we stick strongly to that old principle "love one another" enough that we never shun a soul & are ALWAYS willing to help out whenever a disaster strikes! I'm glad to know that I can visit any LDS congregation & feel just as welcomed as I am in my home congregation!

How Great Thou Art. But by all this heavenly songs, it can change day by day. But everytime I hear God through the music of the MTC I must hear this old swedish tune: How Great Thou Art. Looks as it is like Jesus and God my alltime hit in this world! Thank you very much for this music. It takes me miles away!

james reed funny. no one doesnt deserve this. no one. even political opponents of yours. if obama or clinton wanted them to come id not say what you have said. if someone wants them to come for whatever reason, have fun, enjoy it. no one DOESNT deserve it.

This is one of my favorite songs. Reminds me how precious The Father and Son and the Holy Spirit are. (let us make man in our image) I'm not Morman but I was born and raised in SLC. I used to go to temple square and listen to the choir, I really miss those times it was so special to me and gave me a great deal of comfort. I can only think what the Heavenly Choir must have sounded like. Thank you.

"And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart." I just lose it at that part because I know that I will return to Him and I will be so happy. This song strengthens my testimony and my faith that He will come. And how beautiful it will be. I also love the orchestra so much and how it just adds to the beautiful choir. This song is just perfect.
