This video is a bit of an exaggeration. Most luxury brand are heading to the discount rack as the middle class evaporates. Most buyers were middle class consumers and not so much wealthy consumers. No middle class less retail, especially high-end. The middle class went into debt for high-end brands. Everyone is shopping on Temu because middle class is almost non-existent.

Yves Saint Laurent was actually Kering's biggest earner, but pop culture hyped Gucci, and with Tom Ford's effort to rejuvenate the brand, Gucci became popular amongst the general public. I don't think they really care to reestablish Gucci's luxurious exclusivity because, remember, the middle and lower class purchase more than the upper class. As such, they earn more profit that way. Sure, it may tarnish brand perception, but earning a gross amount of 7.1 billion on average within a year is no easy feat. I don't think Gucci can be considered true luxury anymore, and I don't think that's Kering's objective to begin with. I'd argue LVMH followed a similar path with Louis Vuitton that Kering did with Gucci, except LVMH has way more brands to rely on, if one fails; Kering isn't able to do the same.

Asian here. In where i live what so called Show-off culture is a big thing. It elevates status symbol amongst the commoners. It happens not just in Asia but also in Africa, south America and even the Balkans. Instead of buying a suit those people will buy a T shirt with biggest designers name. It happens the same with cars and houses too. Instead of buying a house with big garden, landscape for maximum privacy people tend to buy ridiculous tacky neo classical houses in high population area just for show off.

When you see these designer names in the outlet store mall, then you know that it's the middle and low classes people purchasing these items that show expensive prices at a discount, but may not necessarily be the real thing. The question is, "who are these people trying to impress by buying and showing off?" The uber rich most likely will purchase directly from the designer.

@@venus_envy I would say they're the most brainwashed generation out of social media from a very young age. So psychologically they watched too many things not supposed to be on their radars.. Gen X was the last one with a normal upbringing and minimal exposure of Internet trolling due to pricey and slow internet accesss. They saw none beyond their own neighborhood backyard. Today if one just signed up on FB the first thing to see was a child and adult hands in questionable positions.. That's how morally bankrupt the media world we are living in today. The younger the more likely they are unknowingly abused and enslaved to the highest bidders.

When I want to buy an expensive product I look for the quality of the garments and the last thing i want is to be a billboard showing everyone a gigantic logo. I tend to choose clothes without logos or very small ones. Big logos look distasteful. People who tend to have that obsession just want to look richer than they really are 🤷🏻‍♂️. Even Primark knows that, i can find some cheap products, that are very simple (no patterns, simple colours) that combined with the right acessories can create a "casual" style

It is incredibly difficult to "lift" a brand's image in any industry, but especially in fashion, ecause, particularly in the fashion industry, the only way to really make people think your clothing and accessories are worth more is to restrict market access and make fewer of them, while raising prices. This can be a really unappealing thing to do in any industry, because of the short-term revenue loss, but it's particularly unpalatable in fashion, because that's an industry where people already feel like they're getting ripped off a lot of the time. Plus, by manufacturing fewer of your products you run the risk of people simply forgetting about them.

It's the end result of when a luxury brand goes from high end luxury items only (rich can afford), to price points for mass marketing of all consumers. Doesn't help that mass marketed items with flashy names are seemingly preferred by those associated with less than high moral standards.

this is why brands get picky about who they want to market their designs to and why they want to gatekeep it for certain consumers.
