The Woodland Escape

Күн бұрын

Peter makes a nesting box for Fred, the barred owl that has taken up residence near the homestead. He also uses the hand cart to clean up some of the site. His wee bit of history elaborates on the Mormon hand cart companies and the journeys the pioneers made to Salt Lake City from Iowa and Nebraska.

Two things Peter, I would try to find a piece of old conveyer belting at a rock quarry to place in the bottom of your carts box, and I would carry a line when I'm working off a ladder to haul up and let down my bucket of tools, hardware and materials and such. Much safer and easier way to work. Nice video as usual.... and a very Happy and Healthy and Prosperous New Year to you and Kathy also.😊

Speaking of enjoying the interactions in the comments, Peter, a few months ago I commented on your ease of starting a fire with flint & steel and you kindly responded about how you used to practice in a rainy forest. That encouraged me and soon after I got my own striker and a couple pieces of chert. I managed to build a fire on my first attempt and found it a very moving experience. Since that was so much fun I set myself a 40 Fires Challenge to gain a bit of skill. It took me about 3 months to get through it but I finished before the end of the year. I had a series of skunked attempts in the middle of my challenge when my charcloth just would not take a spark. Turned out to be (I think) a combination of using a tin that had some sort of paint or coating inside and some fabrics that were not 100% cotton like I thought they were, or maybe they had some sort of treatment on them. Eventually got my char sorted and am back to enjoying catching a spark with the first strike. I've been working in easy conditions, building my fires under a tarp in the backyard and keeping my tinder dry in the house (we've had 99% humidity every night for months and everything outside is damp) so I still need to get out and practice in the field with freshly gathered materials, but this has been a very satisfying beginner's journey, and I'm hooked. Thanks again for modeling good fire building!
@TheWoodlandEscape
@TheWoodlandEscape 7 ай бұрын
Wow, good for you, Josephine. Now that you’ve mastered the char cloth you should try other more common spark catchers used on the frontier. Char cloth was used and is well document but, most people living in the hinterland could I’ll afford to cut their clothes up for fire starting. Charred punk wood was a common one as was chaga from the birch trees assuming one lived far enough north where birch grew. We appreciate your interest in our channel.
@josephinegibbs3902
@josephinegibbs3902 7 ай бұрын
@@TheWoodlandEscape I've done the charred punk wood thing, even used it to light a candle several times. I have yet to locate any chaga. I might have to look at higher elevations. I've also watched some videos from Wilderness Strong about materials that will take a low heat spark without charring and I want to experiment along those lines. And I'm sure you are right about charcloth not being so common back in the day. I can just imagine the feelings of a frontier woman seeing fabric used for such purpose! Thanks for all the good content, and say hello to Fred for me. : )

I suspect they shared a lot and reportedly, because they had an inspection a weigh in, many put multiple layers of clothes on, going from skinny to quite stout looking.

Can't wait to find out if Fred has chosen his new home! I have two old wheel chairs and I was trying to figure out what to use the two large wheels for? I think I will make a hand cart for my garden, I will just have to work out a way to raise up the box? The wheels are not as high as the ones you have and, I will need to stop over otherwise!!

Wouldn't miss a video. There was a fellow around here years ago who would have loved that cart. Matter of fact he had a little surrey his son bought him to go to the store for his grocery. It was pulled by a pair of matching Shetland and was a proud little spectacle going back and forth on the dirt roads for about a month., until the old fellow got drunk and whoopinging and yelling took it down the road full speed. Wrecked his little surrey. Didn't hurt him though. He was the only drunk I've ever seen able to hit a greyhound bus head on and survive. And I do mean head on. He was drunk in the road and knocked the bus headlight out with his head. Got up, whooped and ran into the brush. No harm except to the bus. Don't know if the little surrey had a yellow bed and blue spoked wheels though

@larryreese6146

@TheWoodlandEscape he was a good natured drunk. Seems he was always out for a good time. As a young man, according to my dad, he was one heck of a baseball player. In one of the little local games that used to be held around in local rural communities. Dad said he saw him jump a 4 barbed fence backwards and catch the ball. All I ever saw was a slim little wiry man who stayed drunk when he had the money. Last time I remember seeing him he had on his overalls and clod hoppers. He was riding his grandaughters tricycle around and around the yard as fast as he could go while he whipped it with his narrow brimmed black stetson. We boys used to catch him stretched out and talked to him like we were his conscience from the brush. Didn't work. Baseball player or not he could still throw rocks. You had to dodge quick.

Usually by February most of the owls out here on the prairies have nested and have eggs in the nests. Most often they’re in old magpie nests; other than burrowing owls out on the treeless flatlands.

@@TheWoodlandEscape I remember when I was a kid; climbing up a willow tree to a supposed abandoned magpie nest. There was still snow on the ground and lots of debris scattered over the area below the tree. When I got near the nest I felt a bump of an adult great horned owl on the back of my head. I scrambled down that trunk so fast! My brother was killing himself laughing so hard! ,

It's easy to see how handy a cart like that can be, but it's my understanding that wood spoke wheels like that need special tools to make it and to maintain it. If you can put together a video on making those wheels it would be very interesting.

The trade you refer to is called a Wheelwright and one that absolutely fascinates me. I’m afraid I most likely don’t have enough years left nor the required tools to learn it. Have researched it and it might make an interesting story. Thanks for planting the seed.

I found them locally complete with axle … been looking for years. I believe it was an actually handcart from the mid 1800’s. If you have Amish in your area, they are a great source to locate wheels. Sometimes you can buy used ones from them.

Another fine video Cathy and Peter. It seems so strange this time of year to see the grounds so barren of snow and so much sun. It looks like an early fall day! Where did you shoot the water scene with the geese and mallards? I also noticed what appears to be a new fire pit!! All the best to both of you and keep the adventures coming!

This weather is both crazy an quite frankly disturbing. We were in Port Dover for our family Christmas for the waterfowl shots. That is the communal fire pit for all the historians visiting.

I have an either barred or a great horned owl hanging out around my house, sometimes perching on my rooftop according to my neighbor. Hopefully he is looking out for the random rabbit that runs through my neighborhood instead of my miniature dachshund…… I haven’t seen him yet, but my neighbor has scared him off more than once, but I do hear him.
