Just graduated from Wisconsin with an econ degree and I completely agree with your analysis. I like your mind map idea, I did a similar thing to get through my classes. My advice is to think about how you would explain the problem to a non-econ friend and solve from there. Simplifying the problem usually makes choosing the correct analytical approach A LOT easier. Also, never waste time trying to memorize everything: seeing the patterns and understanding how different variables interact will get you the answer anyway. I think that distinguishes the people who get through the major and those who don't. The people who can't hack it are usually just making the mistake of trying to memorize everything.

Great video! You really calmed me about the math. I feared it would be something extremely hard I wouldn’t understand, but since the problem is the amount of steps, studying a lot will solve the problem.

Nice. I'm An Economics major as well. Also a senior (non traditional) and graduate in Spring 2022. For me the math isn't too crazy as it's straight forward like you said. I love statistics and that gets me through a lot. Also, Economics IMO has some of the best electives: Public Finance, Money and Banking, Energy Economics ect,. Those all make the major doable for a lot of people. The great thing about Economics is that people think it's super hard which reflects great on the people who have a degree in it lol. Also, I too plan on getting an MBA in Finance and opening up more doors. Nice video!

@@abigailnembhard9489 I’d shoot for an Economics degree and beef up on the math/stats and comp sci. IMO a business admin degree doesn’t get a whole lot of respect. I want to know how big of a jump in difficulty is going from Principles of Macro/Microeconomics to Intermediate Macro/Microeconomics?
@Guldmann266
@Guldmann266 3 жыл бұрын
It's relatively large. But if you have a solid grasp of your math pre-reqs, you should be fine. It's essentially a merger between your "mathematics for economists" classes, and your intro classes. An example from microeconomics: In intro to microeconomics, you find consumer and producer surplus through calculating the area of triangles. In intermediate microeconomics, it is done through the use of integral calculus. I can't really say much about the jump from principles to intermediate macroeconomics, because my intro to macro-economics class used an intermediate level book ("Macroeconomics" by Mankiw, rather than his intro-level "principles of macro-economics"). Intermediate macro isn't really all that hard, but it definitely uses more math. However, in macroeconomics, the big jump is definitely the jump from intermediate to advanced. That jump is so large that my university offers 2 classes in "introduction to advanced macro-economics", before you take advanced macro, haha.
@preyaanray8418
@preyaanray8418 3 жыл бұрын
@@Guldmann266 That's a great explanation , Thank you. I follow Mankiw aswell even though my Uni dosent use it. It's just such a great book. I was thinking of doing a minor in econ and my next subject is intermediary microeconomics & macroeconomics. I have a weak base in maths but a good base in economics. What do you recommend?
@Guldmann266
@Guldmann266 3 жыл бұрын
@@preyaanray8418 Have you followed Mankiws intro book or his intermediate book? I skimmed his intro book, and it seems very basic and intuition-based. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but be prepared for more math-based models in the intermediate version. Econ can be considered hard for two reasons: you need to both understand the math and the intuition at a pretty decent level to be able to do the assignments. When people struggle, it's usually due to gaps in one area or the other (as talked about in the video). How much math have you taken? Hopefully at least some calculus classes or a "mathematics for economists" class, if your university offers one of those. Advanced math isn't needed for intermediate level, but you should definitely have a strong understanding of high school algebra (how to manipulate functions, fractions, finding the inverse of functions, etc.), and at least a rudimentary understanding of calculus. For differential calculus you need to be able to find derivatives of functions and finding extremas. You also need to be able to do this for multivariable functions, and for functions subject to constraints (where you use the Lagrange multiplier). Depending on whether or not your university has a dedicated mathematics class for economists, they might teach you this in intermediate micro, or they might gloss over it quickly. For integral calculus, you just kind of need to be able to calculate area with integrals. A good place to learn is Khan Academy. I spent a couple of months getting 100% in algebra 1 and 2 before starting (this will take quite a lot of time, probably around 100-150 hours if I recall). The skills learned in those classes should really just be second nature. I haven't used Khan Academy for Calculus, but I'm sure it's decent. Don't get intimidated by the math. If you struggle with some math during class, make sure to put aside some hours to really learn it. Especially optimization, which is what economists does the most. If you want to learn econometrics (which I strongly recommend), having taken linear algebra first is probably a good thing. Some intro to econometrics classes gloss over the linear algebra-rich theory, though. But at the end of the day, each university is different. Never be afraid to contact your professors and ask them about what you should have a solid grasp of before starting the class, and what will be explained during class. I hope I didn't scare you away from anything. Economics is not super hard if you put in the work, and the math should be reasonable for most students.

@@_blagh3621 I should have studied Economics if I wanted a direct path. But I changed careers years later on. Accounting & Economics are the most flexible of business degrees. I knew after a few years in Accounting I wanted more. In the 90's I consulted with 1 of the big 4 banks & loved the huge salary increase as well as the ever changing landscape. Needing to complete further studies was a bummer but gave me the knowledge to follow ANY field. I wished to pursue. Consider this, those who worked in the auto building industry were replaced by robots. Risk Management is a very solid career as you work with a host of people. You may consider working in Insurance as the choices of PLAN A may be better than PLAN B & then you show the reasons why Vs costs.

my professor told my sister the best thing to do is double major in pure math and economics. a BSc in pure math which is geared towards statistics, and a BA (not BSc, but BA) in economics will give her the best chance in the business world. he says the biggest mistake people make is thinking that grad school (a master's) in economics will make them stand out after they do their bachelors. NOPE! he says the double major in math and econ is better than a bachelor's and master's in econ.
