I’ve always wondered why I’ve never found anyone who had made this type of video before, and after finally finishing this off, I now understand. There is just too much information to try and gracefully organize, and to say that I was unprepared would be a massive understatement. On an unrelated note, I will be posting a number of random videos over the course of the next month for the fun of it. For the 3 people who subscribed to see my edit of the funny lethal company video, it’ll be out sometime this week. To everyone reading, happy new year! I’m hoping to do more with KZfaq over this year, and any support is appreciated. See you next time for whatever I end up uploading.

Well, it depends on what audience you have in mind, complete strangers who dont know a sectoid from a heavy plasma, or people who are like OH COME ON WHO BUILDS FIRESTORMS ARE YOU FOR REAL?? (also, had to cry a bit about you _not_ instantly shooting the pyramid, entering with tanks, finding the maze, and shooting through the ceiling into the brain, _as one does_ , but whatever...) Seeing that this game is 30 years old, my guess is you can skip most details on tech and mechanics; But listening to your thinking process, in all its .. originality lets say (plasma canons needing ammo??) - that was fun!

If you only invade ships when they land then you get much more loot. But eventually even if you smash every ship those mind control or whatever missions will start flipping your supporting countries. But you will have more than enough time and money to get to mars by then. At mars you will have blaster bombs and psi control so if you know what you are doing you should not lose any men at all unless you get an unlucky blaster bomb disaster, which can be very bad.

Original X-com despite brutal is not very hard once you get to know what to do. Though there are thing that I do differently: -I only use laser rifle then heavy plasma as my main damage source. -I tend to let the UFO land instead of shoot it down most of the time so I can recover all the elerium. If the UFO lower the altitude (which change every time they change direction), you can assume it's going to land, otherwise it's trying to leave. -I only use smoke on spawn, not everywhere. -I would risk soldier life to capture a psionic alien asap. Even failing the mission carry it back to base is fine. Once I get the psi-amp, the game it pretty much beaten. It's broken when the moment you see the alien, they are all mind screwed. -I build a factory base to mass produce things, including firestorm. Firestorm would be great if you have it on every continent since most UFO can't out run it.
@PotatoCaravan
@PotatoCaravan 16 күн бұрын
Knowing what to do is definitely the hardest part. A lot of these differences could be attributed to playstyle, though the psi-amp is absolutely busted. I figured the amp would make the game boring, and didn't bother to get it in this run. I will say that I've been moving away from smoking everywhere the more I play, however the theory of keeping the edges of your view distance smoked is still something that I try and follow. Since the aliens can see a few tiles further than you, I like to try and reduce that advantage. Said advantage is still present inside of smokes, however it is far less potent as they only get a tile or two. Additionally I believe I researched the laser cannon before the heavy plasma both because I wanted to manufacture and sell it, and because I didn't think I had enough heavy plasma to deploy them widely. I never actually used any laser weapon past the rifle in the field, though I'd have to re-watch the video to see how that was communicated. Thanks for commenting, and thanks for watching!

I always bring 2 blaster launchers and a ton of bombs to the final mission, you can leisurely sit in spawn and blaster launcher a hole in the wall into the brain room after you've scouted it's location. The best is when you MC an alien with a blaster launcher and have him do it himself.

I dont really like playing xcom on superhuman (The og one, not the openxcom) mainly because the alien get too much buff and your hand are literally tied behind your back, it doesnt help when you get punished too much over shooting down an ufo and that 20% retaliation chance hits you during january and if you are extremely unlucky, you would be facing sectoid that can just mind control every single of your soldier in the base without even looking contact for them. The sloggiest part of the game is definitely training your unit because, each mission felt really detrimental toward your success and you needed to appease the council, but guess what? the alien sets up most of their mission across the continents and avoid the region where you are specifically, yay! and did i mention if they have measly 2 psionic strength and they are the commander of the base on europe? someone getting sacked after you train him for 3 hours straight. call it skill issue, but i prefer to call it that im not masochist and even playing on easiest difficulty, there was a bug where even if you picked superhuman in og game, the game would revert back to beginner after january, it would just be pointless to play on superhuman, and with how the game work it literally just asking me to just keep using psi-amp to minimaze as little casualties as possible because somehow every alien they brought to earth is literal crackshot and you have to deal with weekend soldier that cant hit the side of the barn, it just really frustrating and it doesnt help that most alien would be just using heavy plasma that could instakill anything, and the most annoying part is obviously the ethereals and the sectopod who has high reaction/accuracy. but aside all the pain, this game is just amazing, nothing ever compare to it, even if i still preferred to play the modern xcom, this game is a gem, i suppose the biggest satisfaction is watching your dudes with shitty pistol and rifles transformed into bunch of space marines with heavy plasma wrecks everything that the aliens has to offer, anyway great video Potato.

Wow, Entire run without base defense with that many UFO shot down. One of benefit of early Firestorm imo is to shoot down scout UFO that doing infitration mission as soon as it appear on hyperwave radar. Their entire of infitration loop will delay as long as you shoot them down fast enough so you can delay some countries withdraw from council that way. but usally I'll just skip it straight to Avenger instead.

Looking back through the save files, it looks like around 8 retaliation missions were scheduled, one as early as month three, however none of them ever managed to find a base. My guess would be that OpenXcom changed something to do with the retaliation missions, however I couldn't find anything surface level on the wiki about any such change. As for the Firestorm, I can see how it may be useful. I just find that by the time I can reliably build hyper wave decoders, I can also afford the Avenger. I may have to employ a strategy like this in the future with some of the mega mods though, so I'll keep it in mind.

The aliens have a chance to react to actions you take on your turn. When the soldier missed, the sectoid shot back.

It was. I've played a fair amount of this game in the past so this wasn't a huge ask. I have a second channel where you can see this playthrough lets-play style.

You're correct. It's the second link if you go to my main channel, so I did not think to add it to the video description. I'll update that shortly.

This is not 'original' X-Com at all. The modifications used are not 'just QoL' but definitely changes in mechanics that under normal circumstances would be considered hacks compared to the original game. (e.g. opening doors without walking through them was not in the original and it gives you huge tactical advantage and so does reordering troops) I wish OpenXCom players would stop this _false_ advertising. OpenXCom is fun and I admire your devotion and skills in that game but it is NOT the original by a long shot! (pun not intended) Call me a purist but if you want to beat the original game you must play _only_ by the rules and mechanics of the original game!

If you want to get technical, the original game reset the difficulty to beginner after a single mission, so the game would have been significantly easier than shown. Opening door was backported to the game (at least the PS1 version) after TFTD released, and is not considered a cheat by most people. Extended movement options is definitely considered a cheat, however accuracy falloff over range more than makes up for any advantage that would give me. I listed these changes within the first few minutes of the video so people could decide if they wanted to watch. I don't appreciate the narrative that "OpenXCom players" are false advertising, and not truly playing the original Xcom. The settings in game can be set to vanilla equivalent, most players just prefer to play with a modernized version of the original ruleset. My choice of of the word original in the title of the video was simply in reference to the 2012 version of the game, however I understand the difference in expectations. I imagine you're fairly enthusiastic about this style of video to post such a comment. If so, then I will be playing TFTD on relatively purist settings (I'm not playing with a zoomed in battlescape) for a future video. I'd never played the game prior to posting this video, and want to get the full experience out of it. You may find said video to be more appetizing.

@@PotatoCaravan Do not listen to the purists. You can try to do all what they demand, but they can still claim that since the OpenXCom does not use the original Battlescape, the Battlescape AI is different. The demands will eventually grow to either you personally acquiring Battlescape source code or reverse engineering the Battlescape binary. I finished X-Com the first time in 1998 (14 y.o. at the time) while the game was still set in the near future and I could claim, that that is the only true way to *experience* the game. Do not listen to the purists! On the reordering of troops. On a normal missions: 1st round: throw out two smoke grenades *and* drop one on the craft floor. 2nd turn: move out the HWP inside the smoke screen and rearrange your troops inside. 3rd turn: proceed to move out at the desired order. I consider the rearranging a welcome quality of life feature, as the only reason it was in the original, was the required effort to make yet an other GUI element, just for this one feature. Base assault and Base defence have random starting positions and Lightning has a closable door, which you do not open on the 1st turn anyway. Speaking of Lightning, the original had four glitch exits at the corners... I hope you all the luck with the TFTD play through. Don't count me on following it, since for some odd reason, I have not been able to bring myself to like TFTD even though I really, really like the basic premise. Something about throwing grenades under water for 60+ meters puts me off. And the difficulty level turning to plain hilarious does not help to gather my good will either.

@@alttiakujarvi Thanks for the support. I'm not planning on bending to purists, just felt like the right way to play TFTD. I'm keeping most quality of lift stuff, as I am still doing this for fun, but most stuff that would be considered a mod I turned off. Assuming I keep at this, most my future content will be modded X-Com and variety anyways, so this is the only time I'm really able doing this. As for TFTD as a game, I felt the same way starting out. I had to start looking at the game as a change in mechanics to really get myself into it. Thinking about things like the damage model change instead of throwing grenades absurdly far. I've been having fun with the game, and finally figured out how to escape early game, but does feel like arbitrary changes were made with the sole intent to make the game more difficult, rather than because it was under water.
