I was MAD excited when DJI released the new FPV drone! I've been flying regular drones for many years so I thought it was gonna be pretty straight forward... until it wasn't. Watch, as the wild DJI fangirl gets put in her place when she realises how much there is to learn when it comes to FPV drone flying. Hellava fun drone to fly though. So excited to fly more and get better and better footage with it!
Thanks so much to ‪@MaiOnHigh‬ for teaching me your ways and being so patient with me. Check out her channel for more FPV drone racing: / maionhigh
Thank you also to Chris for teaching me and dealing with my frustrations when I can't fly the gosh damn simulator properly. Go follow him for more FPV footage on instagram: @chris1ton

i think dji fpv is dumb for beginners, realy when you think, when you are learning fpv, dji dont have anythink beginner really needs, it could seems like those features is cool for beginners but 99% of times in practice it useless.. . the price and fragility ratio is outrageous. fixing price cost u about 2-10 regular beginners drones that have pretty mutch same performance/handling or better. besides landing on its own, i gess there no feature beginers realy benefits, especially for the price. for first drone i got tyro79 for 80$ that with better battery outperforms dji fpv and i still have it, crashed many times, so to learn fpv it did cost me around 80$, no soldering, no fixing, no hastle, get out of the box and fly.

I would really suggest building an fpv quadcopter, they withstand crashes like a tank, unlike the dji fpv drone. You will save a ton of money and learn properly. Not for the faint of heart though.

Well it depends, if you want to just try FPV, the DJi drone is great, now if you want to get really good at it, you'll have to push yourself and crash - and for that you'll need a DIY drone - the DJI drone is made to break so you pay for the DJI care every year.

Not trying to be disrespectful but I hate how people call these stabilized drones (regular drones) it all started with guys in their garages building multi rotors from Wii controllers. they weren't stabilized, they didn't have return to home, no save me button. these are regular drones, as they came first. after that came all of the manufacturers that started putting all of the things that make a multi rotor basically fly themselves. they should be called handicap drones instead of regular drones. just my opinion. 🤔

That's what I like about the DJI FPV. I know from experience that learning to fly in manual mode takes a lot of practice. But even if your skills are not there yet, you can still obtain decent FPV shots through flying in N or S mode!

Exactly, I am an experienced FPV pilot. Tried the DJI Drone in Manual mode and was really not impressed... The controller isn't precise enough, the drone doesn't fly nearly as good as my other FPV drones, the footage doesn't look as good, even the fly time wasn't that much better than my 6inch with a big battery. THEN i fly the DJI drone in sport mode and it felt like a much better machine, better tuned, better balanced, footage looks more stable in sports mode too... This is just the way this thing has been designed.

the best thing to do is practise bank turns, and emergency stops (manually) the bank turns will slowly hook up the hand eye coordination, you will find you go exactly where you want to go without thinking and the emergency stops will get you used to really messy visuals that you recover from. ps. flying slowly with a fast quad is a whole other skillset, super fun and great images to be had from mixing ultra slow through trees or whatever and then opening up to a big scene. my only real tip for going slow is use the throttle to go down and the pitch to go up, and don't freak out when you clip a branch or are forced to chop some small branches.

Very interesting to hear about your FPV journey. You can buy a micro whoop quadcopter with Acro mode for about $100. And they're close to indestructable. You could practise Acro flying with one of them and not worry too much about crashing. After a period of time practising with the whoop and the simulator, you could go back to flying the $2000 DJI bird in Acro mode and worry less about crashing it.

Happy you are dipping your toe into the FPV pilotry. Forgive my right brain from making associations & connections, but I think everyone’s nudge into simulation training before making IRL flights illustrates the benefits of Pomodoro Work intervals: although one could just plow through nonstop, there’s probably utility in 25 minutes locked on & 5 minute breaks for 4 work intervals then taking an extended break. My 1st exposure to the method was in working through Kimon Nicolaïdes’ The Natural Way to Draw: A Working Plan for Art Study. There the work/rest reset intervals where broken up with gesture/contour/memory & related modeling study drawings. There is also the use of the same in writing as seen in the numerous NaNoWriMo & CampNaNoWriMo virtual write-ins. I’m not sure how, but I have illusions that the same can be applied to video editing.

Great video and funny too! Hope you stick with FPV because its so rewarding once the controls start to feel natural to you and you can hit tiny gaps all day long. I found with me, the first approx 10hrs on the sim my flying was complete garbage but just persisting with about an hour of practice a day all of a sudden it just clicks into place and your fingers work the controls without you really having to think about it anymore. Basically you build that muscle memory, it just takes time for your brain to learn it automatically. Look forward to some cool FPV edits in the future!

I believe that as a beginner you should fly FPV (ACRO mode) for the first time with a 65 - 85 tiny whoop. Because these are much cheaper, easier to repair yourself and less dangerous. But who has money without end and the safety is not so important yes then DJI FPV. If I'm not mistaken, the DJI FPV has 950 g. So for this you need at least in the EU even the large drone license. From 2024: 250 - 900 g small drone license. From 900 g large drone license.

Good to see this getting some mainstream popularity. I have been with FPV drone flying from then it used to get amazement from people to the point in which it generated fear in people after years of that I decided to stop for a while for the negative hype died down a bit. Looks like it's time for me to get back into it. Also crashing these are is quite normal even for experienced pilots. Sometimes you just have to learn to not think about the amount of cash you will lose by crashing it. Like on my FPV channel I have videos of me crashing mine trashing, go pros and I think I even got a video of a crash which snapped my FPV drone in half

The years of experience flying a drone in gps or sports mode doesn’t matter when learning to fly in manual mode. Those who wants to fly in manual mode need about 5 to 10 hours of simulator time just to be able to not flip on takeoff and be able to somewhat control the flight direction and speed without crashing. After 100 hours of simulator most people can be quite good at flying near obstacles, go through gaps at high speed and do flips and rolls.

After seeing Potato Jet make the switch to FPV from DJI I know it takes obsessive practice to get to a point where you're a natural. Such speed. It looks like it's going to drink video bitrate to get it looking super smooth, though. I'd be surprised if you don't need to upload the full 200mbps at 4k just to get it looking clean on youtube going full speed.

Keep flying, you will feel have more control on your drone overall (either on "normal" aerial mode or on "FPV" mode)

Some FPV pros say. It's actually bad if you already have a lot of experience with FPV in ANGLE and Hovermode (automatic hovering and gyro stabilization) because that's burned/memorized into your brain. It will then be even harder to get used to ACRO/AIRMODE... If you've never flown an FPV drone (with ANGLEMODE) before, you don't have this annoying brain burn-in... I myself flew drones for 5 years before my first freestyle FPV drone in ACRO. But these were not FPV ACRO drones with a cam. I flew them on sight. But I also spent 10 hours in the simulator before I dared to fly in ACRO/AIRMODE in real life...
