Latinx stereotypes are all around us, and they seem to come from everywhere. In her talk, Wendy discusses how much of this comes from Hollywood, and what we need to do to change this. Wendy Echeverria is a senior at Glencoe High School. She she is passionate in advocating for her Latinx culture and publishes her essays to her website. In her spare time she enjoys volunteering, track & field, weightlifting, and being involved in the Hillsboro School District. Wendy’s experiences in and outside of school have inspired her to pursue her passion within education, and thus plans to become a high school Ethnic Studies teacher. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

This was tough to watch... First, don’t use LatinX, it doesn’t make you sound educated because none of us uses it. Second, the game is set against you from the word go if you are not white. You need to accept that you will have to work harder, longer and have to be tougher to make it. Ain’t no changing that no matter how much you cry. Third, Nacho Libre was awesome, did you not see Richard Montoya from Culture Clash in that movie? When was the last time we had a movie with that many Latinos in it? Stop being thin skinned, take every resource you can get to advance the rasa and hopefully we can overcome the socioeconomic traps they set for our people. Or cry and beg like the other races and stay put where they put you, no opportunities, no education, and a walking billboard that justifies their stereotyping.

1st latinx is more inclusive. I don’t care if people want to use it. But Hispanic and Latino isn’t an exact fit either. Some of us are more native than Spanish. And any amount of research into the history of Spanish and European colonization will make you realize those terms were created by others to label us as the “other”. 2nd yes it’s stacked against us. Nothing wrong with wanting to change that. Just because I had to sleep in my college’s library floor during finals to compete and work full time doesn’t mean I want others to have to go through that. I won’t let that experience make me bitter and tell people to stop “crying”. 3rd what was that all about? You realize you are pushing the same narrative that is used against us onto others? I agree with you in spirit but this is also a good example of scars that the struggle leaves on us. Let the girl express what we had to keep quiet about. Let her point out all the slights against us that we had to swallow. Be supportive. Be compassionate. Be kind. In spite of what we went through. Empower the next generation. That’s how we win.

@@User-yc5zz latinx isn't a word in the Spanish vocabulary, it's an English word. Secondly Latino Is gender exclusive, don't like it cuz It's "masculine" use LATIN. "I don't care If people want to use it" you obviously care if you think it's inclusive 🤦‍♀️

@@oddgbmo3036 Lots of words aren't part of an official vocabulary. That's why they add new words to the dictionary every year. I don't think that hits the way you think it does. The second argument follows that if I can describe an attribute about a thing then i must care. I guess that's correct? If that's your takeaway and that's the best... counter argument? Barely. Well whatever that word salad is, best of luck to you. :)

@@User-yc5zz LatinX is unpronounceable in Spanish itself. How is another language (English) gonna bully another language (Spanish) to tell them to pronounce a word that they created, to pronounce it in their language which is impossible to do. Lol That’s imperialism right there.

I'll go one more , mexican are no less indigenous than N. America native nations. remember, there was no boarder here until the European showed up. all the Europeans of the 1800s brought the boarder with them. cutting off many tribal nations. history, being written by white European immigrants to north America. has totally and ignorantly told the our history. how can they tell indigenous history when they cant even understand indigenous languages.
