Did capitalism end slavery, or is labour exploitation necessary for capitalism to exist? And why are there so many victims of trafficking and modern slavery today? In this talk, Professor David Bishop from The University of Hong Kong explains how most human trafficking and modern slavery stem from globalization and the desire to chase cheap labour. Most trafficking happens in the form of “debt bondage” or “bonded labour,” which is prevalent throughout the world. But it is a particularly large problem throughout Asia, and must immediately be addressed. David Bishop divides his time between the two avenues of law and business. He is a practising solicitor, most notable for his keen focus on corporate social responsibility, with projects ranging from a support network for migrant workers in Hong Kong to soap recycling for communities lacking basic sanitation in Asia. He is currently Principal Lecturer at HKU on business law and ethics and teaches the international MBA program at Fudan University. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Trafficking is illegal in Alaska. Call 211 for information on STAR, Catholic Social Service or any public assistance office.

What a great speech. It’s time we take a STAND against modern day slavery. My New Year’s resolution is to be a conscious consumer, instead of shopping on autopilot. I’m learning, along with my kids that we don’t need so much stuff. I’m trying shop slavery free and support those businesses that don’t harbor human trafficking. I look at 2023 as the year for Sovereignty awareness. We are born free. It is our birthright. The businesses that profit from this are depending on consumers. I am now choosing to not support modern day slavery simply by buying less and shopping consciously.

The blue areas are just not reporting accurately. Have we defined the terms calculated on that map? There is a lot of freelancer trafficking in the metaverse/digital spaces. Contract payments (exclude benefits, maintenance costs) or "salaries" offered where employees are subject to early termination, where the hiring party knows freelancers don't have the assets available to legally recoup costs (the lawyer costs would eat any settlement anyways).

If he paid his worker, that's not slavery. If she paid her own relocation cost, that's still not slavery. If a contract was signed, that's not slavery either.
