I always wanted to build one of those! Great job, always a learning curve!

It's not really that hard. It just takes a little time to drill the holes, and file/cut/chisel/whatever the slots. It's pretty easy to find plastic barrels on Craigslist, and like I said, you don't need a food grade barrel.

wondered if the bucket would be large enough.. hey.. AFTER we purchased our commercial model? LaLa Farms? go check them out.. i believe they made one and it works. Can't recall what they used.. but worth a peek? looking forward to your re-model. Have a Blessed week A.P FAMILY.

I was wondering if it would be big enough, too. I saw a video of a hand-powered one that worked, but the handle that was used to spin it went up through the middle. I thought that since that handle sort of interfered with the chicken moving around, that a 5-gallon bucket might work. The dynamics are all different, though, and it didn't. It'll be a while before I do a full-size, but you'll see when I do!

I'm harvesting partly out of being a cheapskate (I've been feeding these free-loaders for a year-and-a-half, and I want SOME return), and partly out of revenge (same reason).

Oh man! As soon as I saw 5 gallon bucket.... My first thought was that’s not gonna be big enough!! I like the idea, I was going to do something similar out of our old washing machine. Great video man!👍
@ArkansasPilgrim

@@LivingTheDreamHomestead. The washing machine would be perfect. Don't take it apart. Just open it up and add the "fingers" like I did in the bucket. Use a generator, and set it on the spin cycle. Of course, you already thought of that, but I like to tell people what to do. It makes me feel powerful. ;o)

Would probably work on smaller birds like quail. They seem to need to bounce around while plucking. And why not just buy some plucker fingers from the web.

your time is worth something. And those rubber straps were not free. I’ve seen 15 gallon size blue barrels. That maybe the big enough for chickens.
@ArkansasPilgrim
@ArkansasPilgrim Жыл бұрын
@@SpYucaipaSoCal The rubber straps were from Horrible Fright, and they come with metal S-hooks that I use for other projects. There less than 10 bucks. I have an old washing machine that I may make into one. Maybe not, though. I just skinned the last ones I harvested, which is a lot less trouble. I've also been advised to just butcher the legs, thighs, and breasts directly, without doing anything else, just chuck the rest, which has almost no meat anyway. Then peel them. I'm strongly considering it.

@@ArkansasPilgrim quail is the only thing I raise for meat. Not cost effective for turkey or chickens. I like the skin on quail. After plucking them. I spatchcock them with the meat scissors. And either bbq or pan fry. Meat candy.
