for an airline job multi engine rating is mandatory yes you can do it from a different place/school.

Multiengine rating is only necessary to fly Airbus company aircraft eg. A320 but to fly Boeing or ATR company aircraft eg. B737, ATR 72-600 you don't need multiengine rating.
