How I Avoid BREAKING My ROG Ally's SD CARD | One Month Later...

It's officially been ONE MONTH, and the ROG Ally has proven to be one of the most talked about handheld PC's, since the Steam Deck. But not all is perfect in the ROG Ally community...because it's a special occasion, I'm finally going to talk about the most talked about topic, the SD Card issue...
and I'm going to give as much advise on how I was able to Avoid BREAKING my ROG Ally's SD card. Let's talk about it....

Im mad they havent recalled this device or at a minimum redesigned the next batch. Had to return mine over the sd card and crashing. It's really unacceptable. I'm waiting on lenovo now. Traded my ally in

Bro I just took a 2 week old ROG ally back to currys (Kinda like our crappy version of micro cenre) after the SD card reader died and killed my 512 gb SD card a samsung one no less. And I never thought about this. the transfer speeds being higher than the SD card is rated for. so Obvious now you said it. my 1 terabye SD card is rated for 180 mbps which is maybe why that one never died. I have set mine to 30 mbps anyway as you advised but with a 180 mbps one could I put it higher? Thanks btw.

The problem is the sdcard PORT that refuse to recognize the card. The sdcard itself still readable if its read from sdcard reader. The port somehow may notice another sdcard on the same class but still it wont play any media files in it. But it can rrad and play media files from lower class of sd card. Class 4 if im not mistaken

It’s a good solution but a $350 (CAD $) add on is a tough pill to swallow after just spending $900. I had a few MicroSD cards already that I was looking to store extra games on. But it’s okay, it just makes the $900 device a $1,250 device to do the same things I expected it to do at $900 (plus my micro sd cards that I already owned)

Unless that "unbreaks" the shitty placement of the sd reader it doesn't solve the problem, just avoids it.

yeah mine died doing an SSD upgrade after removing the stock one it wouldn't recognise any others, it just went to bios and cloud recovery failed as it could not dtect the SSD. So be careful with that. My first one worked great but the SD card slot died. 2nd one SSD slot diedduring upgrade now have a fresh one I am hesitant to do an SSD upgrade on. Sorry I cannot type 4 shi7.

I know a lot of units went out just bunk. Which is very unfortunate. I am not a techie but I am a new ally owner. And the first time I put it in full turbo mode I went wow. That's not ever gonna get used. Too hot you just hear and feel that b cranking. Upon just my few days with it I can see how quite a few ppl just cooked their whole unit and their sd slot was just the first thing to go. I'm hoping my unit stays decent. I have no issues yet other than annoying windows. I was expecting way worse. I love this thing.

yup, I always thought sd cards are kinda primitive despite their capability and small sizes. I bought a portable nice external ssd by crucial, 1 tb.. last thinng I think to get or use .for AAA or demanding stuff honestly is an sd card.

I had the same identical download issues with Western Digital Nvme drives and steam. The same download limit fix is what I had to do or disable write cache. Same pc no issues with my crucial nvme. Then I've had my fixed ally since January and today the new one started having sd card issues and corrupted the sd card and it changed letters on me and asked to format it. I took it out and put back and it went back to seeing it with errors it couldn't scan and fix multiple times. I tried my USB hub card reader and it won't see the sd card now but after trying and putting back in ally it was able to finish the scan and recover. So I recommend turning off cpu boost to keep temps much lower and set the sd card to quick removal to hopefully prevent corruption. I left this sd card as exfat where my old one before rma my ally I had ntfs.

I just lost a nice Samsung pro card after just two weeks the card is unrecoverable… it just suddenly died. I have the latest firmware too ugh this is a pain cos I can’t return it (sd card) anymore 😢

can we do something about the setting the fans and watts to a default of like 20W? I have both ROG ally and STEAMDECK and it's mostly the fan's fault on the ally. My steamdeck didn't have any issues at all. My ally, I had to return and exchange my sd card for replacement, good thing it was within the free exchange period.

Same I took one back today and yesterday actually. on my 3rd now lol. But only one was from SD card though. other was from a failed SSD upgrade wiould not boot into windows or complete cloud recovery. Basically I broke it lol. I guess anyway. Must not like 2280 SSD adaptors being put into their SSD ports. As it wouldn't work after. Thank god for the 30 day grace period Currys PC world offer.

Thanks for the video, been researching the ally for my GF, think have the Switch like PC with help her get more into pc gaming. and who am i kidding, ill be using it too :D,

I just got my third one today. My second one, nothing would work on windows at all nothing would open, then I took out the sd card and everything I clicked on before opened up at once. I hate returning these things it’s a pain in the ass I hope the third time the charm. Mind u, I probably had 20 mins played total on the sd card, and 2 hours total on the whole system over the course of 3 weeks. It’s bizarre.

My personal experience: i only use my sd card for roms/emudeck library. I only noticed problems with the sd card and buggy system operation after i started playing more demanding games and temps were running hot on turbo - not really even using the sd card at the time. The card works fine on my desktop and other sd cards work fine on the ally too, just not the one i started having problems with.

I have had an ally since day one and my SD card works perfectly fine because I also use it strictly for emulation, all other AAA gaming either game pass or Steam is run straight off of the SSD, so that being said, I have never had this SD card issue from the Ally

@luis51785 yea i guess its not all units. Phawx couldnt replicate it either. I only used mine for emulation as well, actually wasnt even using it when it started having issues, just was in the slot at the time. Then after using the stock turbo (which i now know to never do) it started glitching, system ran slow then sd card was no longer recognized. My other card it did it to had the same situation, barely used it yet, my temps werent even that high when it made it fail. I finally put it through to RMA it

@luis51785 im sure they say its fine and i bet people do with no problems but ive found the system still getting up to around at least 80C with turbo mode, stays in the 70s with custom fans. Most sd cards are rated only for like 85C max from what I can tell, but im not expert and just dont want to have more issues

Yeah I am not about that. I have all my AAA games on a 1 terabyte SD card in my steam deck and it's fine so should be with the ROG ally. I don't play a whole lot of roms and indy titles really. I had a ROG burn out my 512gb and kill the reader but it didn't kill my 180 mbps 1 terabye SD card and got a new ROG anyway. and I heard in revision 8 and 9 units it's fixed. How true it is I don't know. But I had to take another back when i upgraded the SSD and it no longer registered any SSD after so I am on my 3rd and hesitant to do another SSD upgrade if the port can be that sensitive it breaks after taking out the SSD and putting a new one in. whcih it did

You have to short G fuse to fix it. Other methods do not work

I will say the SD card thing it's happened to me. I tried a San disk and a Samsung. And it was out of the box. It wasn't even a heating issue because I couldn't even format it on the device. It worked fine in other devices and detected. but the Samsung card locked up on the device and got to return the card. I didn't get to download from steam. Luckily ASUS is going to repair it but it's an issue. Not for everyone but some people. And I got mine at Christmas and know it was purchased recentlym

Transfering files for 12h wouldnt do anything. The frying is caused by using the SD Card while the APU and therefore the whole Board is hot. You have to Play heavy Games Off the SD Card to cause it.

I set mine to max speeds on my steam deck, had it a year, no problems, no reason to do that.

man this issue happened in steam deck. I was downloading Unreal tournament 99 after and The SD card crashed. I also notice that sometimes my steam is downloading at 200mbps when max write speed from my SD card is 100mbps. seems that the Lower limit is corrupting the card due to the fact steam is sending more data than what SD card is able to receive.

Had my steam deck and same sd card for a year now, havnt had this problem once, what sd card did you have? Maybe you had a bad sd card reader and you should've rma'd. I only heard of a software issue that affected the steam decks sd card slot in the beginning of its cycle, it got patched out in about a week

But it was still downloading at twice the SD cards capacity. I have a 180 mbps one that never died when my 80 mbps one did so I think he has a point.@@JDabz96

Just get both like I did. and if you get a unit that is gonna break the SD card it will do it in the first month like mine did. and you can get a replacement like I did. If my new one does it I will get my money back again but it's not all units. and apprently revison 8 and 9 which means september and august 2023 manufacture dates are fixed now. so there's that. wait and see I will . my new ones revision 8. dunno what revision my one that broke was. wish i had looked.

I destroyed 3 sd cards with skate Xl on turbo mode. Heat is the issue. I have to put it in silent or performance mode, 30fps cap to stop this crap. This is a hardware issue. No RMA could fix this.

I swear Windows in general hates External drives man I’ve had windows destroy a WD external hard disk and a couple SD cards on my Desktop. I don’t use external drives to install stuff on windows any more it really not safe for your devices.

Well I'd assume these SD card issues only happen when people are using the SD card as extra space for demanding / triple AAA games actually. I would only want to run retro games of an SD card which would never really have anywhere near as much going on as recent stuff.

I feel like this is something to point out. Rog Ally is a machine that kind of requires you to have basic common sense in the tech world. Aside from it's software bugs. SD cards have always been weaker, slower, etc. This is not news to anyone. They are usually used by other devices which are either low end or to keep storage like files which usually have a lot slower transfer rate and other such things compared to a full blown laptop. Even in laptops, people don't use SD cards for gaming. We have Hard Disks and SSDs for these things. This has been common sense. Common sense since forever. But the problem is that the general public don't understand that because they just want things to work from the very get go and that's impossible with any Windows device or as a matter of fact, any Gaming device because those are called Gaming for a reason aka its made for Gamers aka people who UNDERSTAND shit and aren't just your daily casuals.

@@lordj81 They aren't pointless. I didn't say they were. SD cards are awesome low format storage for things that do not require a lot of hardware power to run. Images, videos, files, etc. That's also one reason among others why they have such low write and read speed compared to an HD or an SSD. The issue stands in people trying to run whole operating systems on them and also games that require proper hardware for them and not low end hardware that's being forced into running them. Far from pointless. But pointless for what many are trying to use them for with their expectations.

i bought a sandisk 128 gig, brand new. would not read it, put it in a laptop to format it ntfs. still no read. grabbed an ancient sony 16 gig out of a camera, read it immediately and had no problem formatting it. havent downloaded anything, i will be buying a different brand and trying it soon.

@@angelsales8544 the heat burnt your sd card reader when you were playing a triple A game on turbo mode. Once the device goes pass 80c that's very hot and being that Asus placed the sd card reader in the wrong spot.

Sorry but I think this is nonsense as I think the fault is a just that and for me I barely used it and never let it ruin more than 15w and the issue happened. I think they are just faulty. Fingers crossed the new mb fixes this. Asus I think know this. If you experience this issue RMA as soon as you can.

It did happen to me on steam deck when I was transferring games from the steam deck main hard drive to my SD card. I think the advice in your video is excellent. I would not transfer games backwards and forwards between your Rog Ally hard drive and your SD card. Otherwise you might break your SD card.

I transfer games like crazy on my steam deck, been doing it for a year now, havnt had a single sd card problem and I have the same one I bought originally with my steam deck.

Not really we are just trying to figure out what is breaking them. It did not break my 180 mbps SD card only my 80 mbps one so I will just make sure to have high speed cards like my 180 mbps 1 terabyte. It has nothing to do with coping hard as you say.@@lordj81

If you cannot use turbo, ASUS shouldn't have advertised it! ASUS is a multi-billion dollars company (7USD billions in equity), can't get it right? Stop giving excuses for poor R&D/manufacturing. Thanks goodness I didn't rush out to buy in the last month. Edit: If its a heat issue, SW cannot fix that. Its not fit for purpose.

what co's of the SD card it's a great device without an SD card. just get a 2 terabyte SSD if you want. You don't write it off co's the SD card won't play triple aaa games without breaking in like 5% of devices. silly. Besides if it is gonna break it will do it in the first few weeks like mine did and get a new one.

i mean, werent sd cards wer initially for photos and videos on cameras. so yeah i think its an aging tech without proper thermal controls for demanding processes. i may be wrong, but that's also what i think since I don't push my sd card too hard and its been ok other than the same findings here.

yeah when they were like 128 mb's lol. these ones are different. Did not have 1 terabyte ones that have 180 mbps transfer rates back then did they. hasn't died either.

Not really. you just take it back and get one that doesn't break the SD card like I did. lol. Or get a 2 terabye Nvme and don't even use the SD card. It's an awesome device either way. Dramatics on you people.
