Really great insights and advice Justin - thanks :) Also, I was just re-watching your excellent recent video about mixing at low volumes, and how this can affect the ability to listen to bass frequencies effectively when mixing.Generally, I'm okay (but not great) at trying to apply saturation of bass frequencies in various genres to create higher harmonics in the mid-range, as well using bass layering (for example with synth bass music) to have one bass 'element' play notes which are more detectable on small speakers. But specifically when trying to mix reggae / dub bass (1970s style, such as Aston family man Barrett's tone on Wailers / Scratch Perry records), I struggle to get this to come through on modern day laptops / phones which cut the bass frequencies. Please do you have any advice about mixing reggae / dub bass for smaller speakers (and still keeping the tone reminiscent of such a unique genre)? Is it possible, or should I just accept that the particular tone needed for reggae dub bass will not cut through on such playback equipment, given the genre's style of a pretty clean bass which isn't much-saturated? Mixing reggae dub 1970s style bass always seems like the compromise to either: a) keep the 'clean / pure' tone of Aston Barrett (and others') bass tone, or b) create a higher-frequencied bass tone which does come through on laptops / phones, but then has moved significantly away from the tone that I am after (due to its much more mid-range / saturated sound). Many thanks in advance.

Hi Doug, this is such a great question! I wish I had the time to really devote to try answering it in a KZfaq comment, but I'm afraid that if I start I won't be done for an hour!! I'll try to keep this in mind for future podcast episodes. Or, we can get on a coaching call or do a mastering session sometime and figure out exactly what's separating our tracks from standing up to your favorite stuff in the style. Please reach out via email if this can be of help! Very best, Justin

@@SonicScoop Hi Justin, many thanks for your really kind reply :) I'd certainly be (and I imagine many people dabbling in dub reggae / jungle / dub techno / 808 bass style genres etc would also be) extremely interested to watch one of your excellent podcasts and learn more about how commercially successful and experienced professionals such as yourself try to get songs to be heard on smaller speakers even though these genres rely upon fairly 'clean' / 'not fizzy mid frequency distorted' bass tones. For example, tracks such as those of Black Uhuru's "The Dub Factor" album, or Roni Size's "Brown Paper Bag", have pretty 'clean' sounding bass tones which the tracks are built around - and it might be that fans of such genres must simply compromise and accept that they can only really enjoy these bass-heavy songs as the artist intends upon low-frequency capable speakers / headphone setups rather than smaller speakers? But with such incredible audio tools and production techniques as we have, it might be that such tones are able to be pushed further into the midrange (and into smaller speaker territory) without gaining the increasing appearance of 'fizzy mid-frequency' saturation on top of the clean-ish low bass sound? It will be intriguing to hear your thoughts in a future podcast! Many thanks also for the very kind offer of email communication / a coaching call / a mastering session as well (although tbh a future podcast would probably be more desirable please, given that several other of your subscribers might also be in a similar boat). Cheers :)
