Love it, this is how I got my S5 for $400. I think the default is “it won’t turn on,” but turn on it did. The shutter had some dust stopping it from actuating. Blew it out, cycled it a few times, camera win🎉

My Lumix G1 has taught me 2 things about "old" cameras. They still have magic, and the Lumix menus were brilliant from the start of m43! After owning maneeee Lumix cameras, knowing the menu system of one makes it so easy to pick up any other Lumix camera! There's a third thing for anyone who takes a chance with and old Lumix m43. They're delightfully tiny compared the modern BBB (Big Black Brick) cameras! Come on Lumix! Give us a modern tiny GX7!😂👍 By the way, my G1 would love to be the star of one of your videos! Happy to send it to you as a contribution to the channel!😊

I loved this! Even though I was sure I knew the outcome I enjoyed the drama (and planning) that went into this video. At one point I thought it had shades of an Indiana Jones adventure but in the camera world..some practical advice, plus a little bit of mythology. Nice! Just don’t paint this one!

I have a gh2 bargain experience too. I saw a bundle of camera gear on an auction site and it included an Olympus om10 film camera - so I bid on it and won the om10. Within the bundle was an immaculate e-m10 mk I (5k clicks) and an equally immaculate red gh2 (12k clicks) - all for £50 + £10 delivery! This was how my m4/3 love affair started. I tested the em10 against my Nikon df and was amazed by the sharpness of the Olympus compared to the df.

GH2 has a piece of tech similar to the LX100 and some other compacts. An oversized sensor that allows for multi aspect ratios when shooting stills or video. I don't belive they have included such a thing since the GH2 in their m43 bodies and the closest thing may well be the open gate system today. The GH2 sensor went on to be used without the multi aspect feature in the G5 and G6 (hence the G6 having excellent video).

GH2, I (or better my dad) got it for free, new. Back in 2012. How, Mediamarkt sold it in a blowoutsale. With the 14-140. For €645 euro. A lens that costed as much of that alone. So I ran to my dad, who was looking for a new GH as an upgrade for his G3. We drove to the Mediamarkt, grabbed the box (which was still there), went through the payment booth, forcked over the cash, and walked out having the feeling we both just stole a camera. And indeed, back in the day, it was pitched against Alexa's and Red5's and Canon's at a shootout at the Skywalker Range in the presents of a few minor Hollywood directors, like George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola. And they all were amazed by the little bugger.

The GH2 was the first camera that got my mum and me into the M43 system back in the days. Still got this marble around here and took it with me as a photo cam when filming stuff. It looks pretty funny combined with the Oly 40-150 F2.8 you mentioned in your newest video :D 5 Years ago, i got a pretty good deal on a broken GH4 for 150€. The touchscreen was dead. 10€, 30days waiting and some screws later, the touchscreen flex cable was fixed. My current lineup consists of GH2, GH3, GH4 and today, my bargain deal G9 arrives. I could not be happier.

Lovely, lovely! You are the speaker of my enthusiasm too. This is the camera that opened it all up after my 20-year absence from photography and lead me into digital photography and affordable video realm. I understand that the hack was not at all that dangerous, but Lumix came up with a firmware update many years after we all forgot about this model. It fixed color science at long last and showed what the real value it was. Check it by all means! I've got two of them and won't be selling them any time soon. They indeed have that sinematic look that just asks for a bit more light, preferably sunshine to tame the contrast, and it will have that special character that we now try to simulate with some silly means.

I enjoyed this video. I got into m43 kit last year after feeling a bit frustrated with some of the results from my 1" sensor Sony RX100 III. It's often great but sometimes a small sensor just can't cope. I bought the cheapest used m43 camera with lens and viewfinder (when camera LCDs get as good as my phone's I'll start composing with them) in decent condition that I could find on ebay and ended up with a Lumix DMC-G3 with 14-42 kit lens, battery, charger, original software (and access to latest Silkypix), and manuals, all boxed and like new for £70 delivered. Not bad! I loved it. I have since bought a G80 & GX80 for a considerable improvement in sensor & image quality and stabilisation and now I have some other lenses too. But to get a camera capable of seriously good results for £70 was fabulous. It is tiny, I guess the G3 has the same body size as the GH2, super light and has a big bright viewfinder with a wide range of dioptre adjustment, and 100% visible even if you wear specs. I think back to when I shot with film and used stuff like Minolta XD7, XE1, SRT-303, Pentax MX and then got into digital with a Dynax 7D and Canon G2. None of that stuff was cheap. This 10 year old £70 Lumix is so good and cost a ridiculously small amount. And Lumix viewfinders are amazing! Really nice to use, even the older ones. The autofocus is astonishingly good and my G80 even has a Touch AF focus with your nose facility! I switched it off.

I got the GH2 in 2012 when I started to get serious about video. Absolute workhorse, took a hell of a beating, fell out of the first floor of an appartment in Brazil, the lens detached, clicked it back on, put the battery in and out and it worked again. It's still with a friend who has it, it's still working. Image quality for that time was insane.

I did the same with a G2, theyre the same A camera shop had it listed on ebay 'does not turn on', in the images were 2 clone batteries I also had a GH2 some years earlier and liked it a lot. A lot more than the red G2 I ended up with. ENjoy it, theyre tiny and light. Despite being told clone batteries lack the electronics for the camera, I suspect clone batteries trip out a physical switch somehow the hack doesnt change much, especially for stills

Still have my GH2 - never sold it (even not being a m43 user anymore), because was my first "serious" camera. And yes, some myths are true - and I could give some info from long time ago. - About the "not turn on" - there is a good reason for that. Firmware. Panasonic made the 1.1 firmware in Dec 2011, and...a long time after, in July 2018 (!), released the version 1.2, with just one item: "Improve the compatibility of Panasonic battery." Which means: make it harder to use with 3rd party batteries. See the firmware version on your unit, good chances that it is version 1.2 (I've never updated mine past version 1.1); - The sensor: besides being the last m43 oversized multi-aspect sensor (don't remember with the GH5s one it is also), it was the last m43 sensor made by Panasonic (after that, all m43 sensors are made by Sony - the GH6 / G9 II one could also not be Sony). And the Panasonic CMOS sensors have colors that remember the colors of the CCD ones. That is the "sauce" of the GH2. - Go ahead and hack your unit - the image quality in 1080p with hacks is WAY better than the stock one, is another world. I recommend the Driftwood ones, but if you want to test with something more "conservative" (the Driftwoods are kinda CD card sensitive, but Sandisk Pros are cheaper now), I recommend the Sanity ones. Regards!

GH2 is one of my all time favorite cameras. I hacked my GH1 but ended up not hacking my GH2 as it was sufficient out of the box for what I was doing at the time. I did get a GH3 but I actually think the video image was worse than the GH2. I shot my student thesis film on it. Upstream Color is a gorgeous movie and was shot on it. Had moire and other issues the GH2 didn’t although benefitted from being one of the firs hybrids with an all I-Frame recording option. But the body was bigger and yet felt cheaper despite the move to metal construction. These cameras were a case study in Panasonic listening to the community and giving them what they wanted.

I believe my GH2 do have auto ISO in video. You might have to turn it on in the menu. In movie mode I filmed in S mode and used auto ISO for run and gun stuff. Also by default the auto ISO for stills and video is ISO 160 to 400 but you can change it to ISO 3,200. I know the newest firmware supports the newerrst batteries but also removes the hack.

Great story! Reminds me of my most recent purchase of a GF3 and Panasonic 14-42mm kit lens for... MINUS AUD2.20. I bought the kit for $100 on FB Marketplace, just a body, less than 1000 shutter count, lens in pristine condition (just some discoloured silver paint stripe), neck strap, GENUINE battery and even a small SD card. Reason for cheap sale was... lack of battery charger. I had 3 compatible batteries for TZ90, so brought one with, the camera worked so I already won... then I sold the lens on eBay for...$120, so after fees made $102.20... I kept the camera as my third M43 body for home spiders macro because of the built in flash 😂

This video makes me so happy. I bought a Samyang 8mm fisheye lense for 30 pounds. It was so cheap due to a loose hood. When i picked it up the seller gave me his panasonic G6 because the shutter was stuck closed and he couldnt use it any more. When i sat down 5 min later i opened the shutter with my finger and set the camera to electronic shutter. Then i tightened a screw on the lense and now it all works. I also just bought a Olympus OM-D E-M10 for 80 pounds with kit lense. That was pretty good to.

@@MicroFourNerds I'm going to guess that it took a around 14 days, start to finish. And not including the years taken to hunt for said camera. 🤣🤣 With my latest masterpiece, I spent eight evenings filming to get six hours of footage and only used 15 minutes of it. Not including the time spent culling what was not wanted, it took a couple of days to edit. And then it took at least two days to grade and find music for it. Your episode is quite simply a masterclass in putting together an entertaining episode of how you spent £27 on a potential paperweight. I'd say its up there with Peter Mckinnon and his partner Kirk. I'd guess that 2024 is going to become a big year for you going off this wonderful piece of entertainment.

I own two Panasonic Lumix GH2 a lot of models have really bad bugs and I heard Panasonic even said that's the way the camera is. There is a really bad banding issue in video starting around ISO 640 or 800 is the light is low you will getting this banding line at the bottom. The work around is too drop your shutter to 30th or 25th of a second. The other issue is in low light when you hit record the camera has a huge shift to green. I've talked to other GH2 some don't have the banding issue. And I've taking to one GH2 owner saying the hacks made the video worse. I don't know why some GH2 cameras work fine and others are buggy?

I bought my GH2 new back in 2012. Hacked it and loved the image quality ever since. Just a pity that Panasonic never gave us a 4K version of THAT SENSOR. Although I've owned the G7, G80 and GH5 since then, NONE can compare to the image quality of the GH2. Although I don't use it anymore, I would never part with it. 😀 ... out of my cold, dead hands ... 😀

I have the gh2 since 4 years and got it for around 180-220 euros , cannot remember . But my pictures are so flat in color and even the iPhone X has a much higher dynamic range. How did you manage to get these colors and specially the BW? My Olympus ep1 had a much better color profile and dynamic range. That’s why don’t under a newer camera is so much worse.

I owned a GH2 at one time. Mine "bricked" with the message, "Turn camera off, then back on" (OEM Battery) Seems to be a common issue. Searched, but did not find I fix??

Is there much difference between a GH2 and G2? Got a G2 with kit lens for £50, boxed, looked like little use from new.

There are quite a few upgrades in the gh2 vs the g2. Higher megapixels, more stops of dynamic range, better video features, and (even tho theyre both bad haha) an updated auto focus system for the time. Also the mic input for the gh2 for audio. However if you're not too interested in the video specs the g2 could be a really affordable and fun option!

@@MicroFourNerds Thanks, very helpful! Have zero interest in video. I wonder if an M43 with the right lens, would be any good for product close ups, with nice bokeh? Sorry for ultra beginner questions...........

@humourless682 its no problem! With the right lens you could definitely get that effect. My favourite macro lens on the system is the olympus 60mm f2.8, which can give you brilliant close ups, and a good amount of bokeh 😊

I bought a GH4 for 370 pounds in 2020! I was tired of the D7000 29.99fps in 1080!probably buying a Sirui 24mm anamorphic lens since they cost less than a months rent now!

The GH2 was my second camera ever back in 2014, and it felt like I had leapt light years ahead vs my Canon 60D! I couldn't believe how great it was, once it was hacked (it's really EXTREMELY hard to brick it while hacking, you'd have to be trying to deliberately I think). I still use it even today in emergencies for videos. I later got the GH4 then the GH5, and still have all three, and I think it's actually better than the GH4. The video is not much worse (when hacked), but the ergonomics are so much better. Plus the in-body flash is absolutely incredible. I have taken some of my favourite photos of my life with the GH2, some Lumix pancake primes (14mm and 20mm primes), and its very own flash - in 2023. Even preferring it over my full frame Sony A7C in some situations. It can even do rear curtain sync in body, and I only learnt this last week! The GH2 is my favourite camera of all time. I save the vintage lenses for my GH5 though. This thing pairs so well with the pancakes that I never even use my Lumix G Vario 2.8 set with it. Go micro and have a blast.

The GH2 footage really looks like film. Was it color graded to look like film?

I shot in Natrual and lowered the lowered the contrast in camera, which gave a very nice base image! Then I did a bit of light colour grading - just making the highlights a little bit more green and the shadows warmer 😊
