Loving your vids! Apistogramma brought me to channel as a long long time keeper and breeder of this wonderful species. Can't wait for the Elizabethea..... I've not kept them for a few years but bred them many times years back and found they needed pretty low PH in my case to get hatches, most of mine were wild caught though. Fantastic video. And a great question regarding cost. Where I may disagree is in your theory they are unknown and low demand. Gold, Orange and Green lasers are among the first to go on good websites and the swaps I attend. That group you have could fetch several grand. Easy!

When the first green and gold lasers appeared on the market here in the UK, they were all high priced due to their strikingly fabulous colours and their rarity in the hobby. My LFS got a few in priced at £20 in 2001. They sold fairly slowly, and when the owner wanted to order more, he was told by the wholesaler that they were limited by the numbers that were being imported. Thus, the prices have remained high ever since. Despite the numerous tank raised fishes now available, these species are still 30 to 40% more expensive than other, easily bred species. So, IMO, it may be a case of the dealers trying to keep their profit margins up, because the sheer abundance of bronze or peppered corys is as great as their popularity but the mark-up on these common species is insufficient to make a living.

It's very odd that they're priced so high. I've heard that they're expensive because they're a relatively new species, but CPDs were dicovered in 2006, same with the panda garra, and they're no more expensive than rosy tetras where I live. If I could ever get my hands on some I would attempt to flood the market and have their prices lowered. Also, if I remember correctly, they're part of the same grouping as the bronze cory, y'know, the cheapest and most common Corydoras species in most fish stores.

I have some bronze cories and they spawn like crazy (even though "I" suck at breeding fish), had them for a long time, but they're super panicky to the point I gave up and just keep the tank covered, let them go about their business. Some cories I had (sold) I hand fed them as fry and juveniles. I believe there is a chance for them to lose that classic cory panic behavior if they are hatched in one aquarium and allowed to grow there, never moved out of it, and hand-fed. Something that could be fun to test. I can confirm good hatch rates and survivability without methilene blue or other sterilizers, in a STERILE environment. All cories I spawned and grown successfully, I did not remove the eggs, I removed the recipient containing them and placed them in a recently set tank. Raised almost 200 juveniles there. Sure some died and I didn't see but it's still huge success comparing to when I tried to set them in a tank with mulm and debris or even when I removed the eggs myself, I think even a gentle touch damages them. Eggs would either develop fungus when the tank was dirty even though it was running for months without fish there and water replaced, or fry would die after a few days. So, mulm is highly unlikely to be beneficial to the fish, contrary to the opinion of some "experts". EDIT: They might be so expensive because you had "only" 80 fry. I had just one female and she easily drops over 100 eggs. She is about 2yo now.

Thanks so much for your videos. It is a joy. I have been wondering as well how the fertilisation works as I have observed it many times with my sterbai, but I never could make sense of it. @@nicholaskritz9323 Yep that's exactly the problem I mean. I can't lock up a bunch of tanks with a fish that can't cohabitate. Which means not splendens. I think they might be too far apart genetically to cross breed. I don't see a lot of hybridization but that might be because of the angry fish nerd mob. They don't like mixing genetics. I don't either for the most part. Takes away from the heritage and piece of nature that a fish brings with it. It's not a moral issue though, on that front I think it's neutral. @MakeMoreFish
@MakeMoreFish 7 ай бұрын
Was it something about the mop being in the direction of water flow? If so, corydoras like to lay their eggs on surfaces that have water flowing noticeably across them. It's all under water so I understand that being a bit abstract, but consider the water that flows out of whatever filtration you're using. If you place a mop in the direction of that filter outlet, you would see the strands swaying around as the water flows past them. That would be an attractive place for them to deposit their eggs.
