I built a bunch of the Colour modules and the OLA5 opto compressor and they're all amazing and super fun to build!!! I'm a programmer and haven't done much soldering but everything was super easy to build and figure out. It saves you money and they sound amazing - everyone wins.

An awesome compressor, utilising the analogue summing with dry and wet and then put through the transformers. Golden

Heya Wytse :) Needed to say, the fact that you decided to build this yourself really shows your love AND your understanding of analogue gear. SO many people thrive to own it with no understanding of why analogue has "that sound" compared to digital. I freaking ADORE them both and love to understand under the hood, once I learned that each has its place, each has its uses, neither is generally "better" and once you know how it works it allows you to tune things quickly and precisely. Without that knowledge you're going to spend a LOT of wasted time tweaking knobs that you don't understand what they're doing until you find a random combo that works, with that knowledge you can get the sound you want within minutes or even seconds. Cheers for all the great vids. As usual, when I post you're more than welcome to call me a lemon my friend :) Much love to you, friends and family.

Glad you‘re giving the SSL Bus style VCA compression another chance after that GSSL you built ;) As someone dealing with „snake oil“ in the plug-in world a lot but also use a lot of hardware I would love to see more content on „snake oil“ in the hardware world - so many products out there pretending to be Neve or SSL or Pultec or whatever big name designs but they lack the components, shrink the signal path in order to cut costs and in the end what are you even getting? Thanks and all the best, Tobi

This is such a good company doing this. I really want to experience building my own things to get confidence to modify things later on. I really love the studio of Joseph Puig... nearly everything is modified to be his own thing. Another good thing is to learn things like this for when you need to fix things. Then, the amount you save doing yourself makes it very very worth it. saving 6/700 punds

I have been down the rabbit hole of choosing a G bus for my studio. Unfortunately, I bought the 500 version, which I don't like at all so far, but this video really makes me hopeful to have finally found what I was looking for. My problem with the 500 Series is that it has way too much "grit" to the sound, a kind of harshness I associate with bad signal paths. Not the 3D feeling I expected. Maybe I am too used to the digital SSL bus compressor sound, which is much cleaner, and maybe the 500 Series is better when you actually mix into it, but I have to say I found it unbearable. Also, this gain issue is a real problem because I use the compressor as an insert. Meaning I need quite a bit of headroom when leaving the interface so I can actually mix into the compressor. Then the compressor steals another few dB from the signal by pushing it down, and then I can't even use the makeup gain because it sounds grainy, leaving me with a very much reduced dynamic range. This compressor, on the other hand, seems to be way better in every aspect. Very musical, it has that special spaciousness and human-like quality that really makes it "sound like a record!" The fact that it seems less "dirty" and more "hi-fi" might be just right for modern-day productions. And it even has the switchable transformer for when grit is actually needed. And if that all is not enough, it also borrowed the loudness S-curve thing from the API in the sidechain, which sounds fantastic to my ear too. Long story short, the 500 Series is on its way back and I ordered the DIYRE, can't wait to try it!

Are you mentioning the GSSL Turbo Mod? - that effectively sorts out the issue of the bass/centre dictating the 'sides' of the compression? I've both variants here and the one with just the filter sidechain is more of a workaround whereas the one with the Turbo mod acts more like a true G series compressor. My mate Keith from Expat Audio channel explains it well in a video from 15 years ago.

Noticed that a few respondents don't feel that they can build this compressor. Peterson Goodwin and his crew at DIYRE provide a wealth of information and guidance in the Resources section on all their product pages: build guides, interactive maps, parts sorted into bags that follow the build manual and calibration guides (printed and KZfaq vids). Wish I could afford to a G-Bus while it's on sale as Xmas present to myself. Also looking forward to DIYRE's take on a 1073 pre sans EQ in 2024.

Just curious… Nowadays with all the new digital technologies, including AI, how much of a benefit, sound wise, in the end results, do you get from analog gear VS top notch plugins ? 2023 is ending and have we reached a point in time where analog, except for our personal preferences, has been surpassed in terms of practicability, value and sound results ?
@soundcasts2udios
@soundcasts2udios 8 ай бұрын
Even when we get to the point of plugins and hardware being 1:1 Hardware will always just be more fun. Your mixes will sound better just cause the process is more enjoyable. Really what it comes down to in my opinion.

@@soundcasts2udios I get you. But … I am 62 yo and been a sound engineer for almost 40 years. I had a large recording studio in Montreal. API Legacy Plus 48, and 5 full racks of Neve, TubeTech, Lexicon, AMS, ShadowHill, La2A, 1176, etc… Name it we have it. It was only fun in only one circumstance : You had time and no anxious dude buzzing around. You needed the white pen to mark the setup, take pictures for recalls, take precise notes of all the patch cords routing, and lock the mixing room to make sure the junior won’t come at night messing around … And then the client/producer calls you 2 months later and wants some « minor » adjustments in every song…. I know I sound a bit harsh but as a professional mixer that was the reality of working in an all gear setup. Now if you do your own projects, don’t care if a tube goes bad, or any other component, and don’t have to make a hard decision about « who’s gonna get the real good stuff », yeah… it’s fun… But for guys like me, all the more recent high quality great sounding plugins are a blast. Take the most expensive one’s out there. Buy 20 of them. Still half the price of a single « real » any hardware gear named Neve, SSL, TubeTech, and so on. In my very personal opinion, it doesn’t even make sense to buy hardware compressors, limiters, Eq, Reverb, Gate… One top quality hardware tube stereo mastering machine ? Yep. That could make sense if you really wish to own gear. Tonight, I will do touchups on 2 different projects in the comfort of my home. Just hope my PC won’t crash on me… 😅😉

back in the 1970s i worked at studio with consoles that had VCA faders. and at one point we did a shootout comparing the sound of different VCAsin the faders, so no differences in the surrounding components and certainly no compression ratio or other types of differences to complicate the comparisons JUST the difference in sound between DBX, Aphex and Allison Research VCAs. And they sounded very different from each other, especially in the way they handled fast transients. So I wouldn't discount the difference in VCA sounds, no matter what manufacturers want you to believe.
