Your first tip about time being important for detachment is exactly how I love to make music. Every so often, I'll spend a weekend sketching or drafting out various ideas and keep them stored in my ideas folder. Then a few months later, I have a really useful library to come back to for inspiration so I can concentrate on developing the piece. It's like music sourdough - the longer you leave it, the funkier it gets.

That is one of the best videos giving light to a new paradigm (for me) of creating music. The last part - getting rid of the original idea - I’m always so attached to it, that when it doesn’t work, I insist leaving it there, knowing that the whole thing doesn’t work with it, spending multiple hours trying to make it work and ultimately scrapping the whole track.

The key to the accidents is being present with the moment. It’s too easy to make a mistake and undo it. Being in tune with the moment makes it easier to spot the happy accidents.

yooo that insight into the making of Afraid of Us is insane, what a beautiful self-remix moment, and it makes it so that, towards the end, filling out to the full four bars of your hook over the beat is so powerful

Jon, your music has been a part of my life since 2014 when a friend of mine made me listen to the Come up. I was mind blown and never looked back always waiting for the next song or album and buying them on itunes! (You are the only artist I would anticipate and buy their album as soon as it came out and bought multiple albums from) everybody I shared your music with loved from my friends, co-workers, my family (my mom and sisters are not the biggest rap fans but they loved your music!) to a random lady in the elevator of a hotel I was working a night shift as a janitor/maintenance worker who was jamming with me to That’s OK I had playing on speaker. Thank you for your music and I am so glad you have this channel (your voice is made for podcast, radio etc.) Looking forward to more albums and more videos on this channel! God bless 💯✊🏾🔥🙏🏾

This was my ethos for a little bit, whenever i felt like making something different, id cut that alias off and assume a new musical alias that had a completely different style from my past alias. Eventually i transitioned aliases 3 times with completely different styles and was able to combine some of their styles to pretty much be able to collab with my shadows, Ty for coming to my ted talk. TLDR: switched aliases 3 times and now can collab with myself essentially

All great knowledge. A lot of things you broke don't you don't even realize you might be doing. It can also be fun to take apart a finished track again and make something new with it. A sorta self-remix. Setting aside time to come back to your work is something I do aloooot. Sometimes so much so, I forgot I made a thing, dismissed the thing, then refound the thing latter and enjoyed the thing. Now wondering why I didn't like it in the first place for whatever reason.
