What is your favorite LUT to use for V log?

I often use that LUT, though for the CST I use Output Color Space: Rec709 and Output Gamma: Cineon Film Log. I was just trying out both options. There are some differences. With a bit of tweaking they can both produce almost the same image. The most significant colour difference I noticed was with the reds.

This is great, Anson! Thank you for sharing this helpful guide, and I enjoyed hearing your recent thoughts on the S5 vs S1H! I have a quick question for you! When setting up a Resolve project, and you are intending to do a CST from V-Log to Arri Log-C, what input color space would you recommend under Project Management? Do you set your own projects to Panasonic V-Log, Arri Log-C, or Rec 709? Thank you so much!

I ended up in really insightful scenario recently. I had a footage where I was myself under a tree, having a little bit of shade on me, and in the background there was sunlight, trees and water, sunny day. I did overexpose a little bit on v-log, to be able to retrieve enough details on my skin etc. and the result was as expected, but I lost the sky in the background, impossible to recover it. My point is grading vLog is not only about taste, It seems we might even want to assess if the scene is suitable, because you may have to compromise. I think a profile line cinelike D2 would have given better results at making the entire scene exposure more even and balanced, which kind of make sense as log profile is supposed to have a higher dynamic range. With that being said I'm not a grading expert either, but happy to learn and share experience. (Shooting on s5)

What I do with my S5 footages in Davinci Studio is color correction rather than color grading. I prefer authentic colors. I use the Color Space Transform function in the last node to get advantage of the V-Log gamut during correction of exposure and colors in the previous nodes. So, I start with the last node, then correct luminance in the second node (I don’t change the first node), then WB in the third node and so on. After many years with mft the S5 footages look a little bit soft for my taste so I apply sharpening almost every time I grade (actually “correct”) my S5 footages.

Good video! Some time ago I recorded braw with my s1h and I was distressed when I was grading. When I am setting up my input colorspace and gamma in the color management (not the cst node), should I use vlog/v gamma or blackmagic color gen ?

I think you could technically do either, but I would use v log

ive shot some footage on an S5 but for some reason I cant put it into resolve without it being directly from the sd card, Im a bit of a beginner to all of this and if someone could tell me what I've done wrong that would be great, i use a MacBook pro and I'm shooting the footage in mp4 mode

The film Luts In Davinci are often used on top of a cineon conversion. Have you tried this?

I do it for my sigma FP footage, but I liked the look of the ARRI log with that LUT. I did some trial and error with it and just likes the look

It is built into the LUTS in davinci resolve

@@Ansonandco sorry thanks found it!.. I followed the same process using my blog footage from my Panasonic s5 but when I add the lut it’s way too harsh and I have to dial it down through the output gain to get it to look right?..you didnt have to do this in your video?

@@sideflipmax5129 this was a while back, actually switched camera . But there was a bug I think, cause I switched something in the settings, like the decode options and made it work :)

I have a problem with my Footage in Davinci Resolve. Even on the Studio Version, on Windows my 10bit Footage gets completely distorted in Davinci. Does anyone have an ideal how to solve this?

I don't know why I keep looking at these grading videos. The work just does NOT seem like it's worth it. Why not just use a standard profile and just expose properly? If the purpose of Vlog is to preserve lows and highs, then why not just expose properly? .... Good video sir!!!
