Күн бұрын

The Granny Wheel is compatible with all the Singer Heavy Duty sewing machine series: 85SCH, 4423, 4411, 4432, 4452, HD 6380, Model 64S and other sewing machines.
In this video Rani tells the story of how and why he invented the Granny Wheel. In brief, it was after he purchased the Singer Heavy Duty 4432 sewing machine. He wanted to add stitching to his leather bracelets, straps, belts and dog collars, to upgrade them and make them more beautiful. The plan worked out and the sewing machine proved capable of sewing through the leather but Rani found a problem: the sewing machine's handwheel wasn't comfortable to turn. It was too small and hard to grip. He began to have wrist pains.
To solve this problem Rani invented the Granny Wheel. He began to experiment with different designs using his 3D printer and manufactured many prototypes. Eventually, the final Granny Wheel took shape and today it is permanently fixed on his sewing machine, making his stitching and sewing so much easier and less tiring.
To his surprise Rani found out that the Granny Wheel has even more benefits than he had realized. The main one was that he could now even sew without electricity - off Grid. He can now take his sewing machine out to his cabin in the woods or to his boat and continue sewing his bracelets.
In the second part of this video Granny Wheels' Rani, who makes bag handles, guitar straps, belts, bracelets and dog collars, is taking the Singer Heavy Duty 4432 for a test run. We will try sewing full grain cow and buffalo butt and shoulder leather of different thicknesses and then analyze the results.
It turns out that the Singer Heavy Duty does a fair job of sewing leather up to 9 ounces (3.7mm) ! But it's not all milk and honey; the machine is limited in thread thickness - we cannot use beyond thread #69.
We will talk about the relationship between threads, needles, and the sewing machine and how to choose the correct thread and needle for your project
CHAPTERS - you can use these to jump to a specific segment:
00:00 How the Granny Wheel was born
01:23 Granny Wheel designed on Tinker CAD
01:55 Granny Wheel printed with a Creality Ender 3D Printer
02:14 Final touches to the Granny Wheel - screwing, polishing
02:27 Sewing Granny Wheel jute pouch
02:37 Setting jute pouch snaps
02:59 Introducing the different types of leather we will try stitching with the Singer Heavy Duty Sewing machine: Cow and Buffalo butt and shoulder full grain leather straps of different thicknesses.
03:34 Stitching 2.4mm - 6 Oz cow butt leather
04:18 Stitching 2.7mm - 7 Oz buffalo butt leather
05:04 Stitching 3.3mm - 8 Oz cow shoulder
05:50 Stitching 3.7mm - 9 Oz cow butt
06:48 Analyzing the test results: The Singer Heavy Duty sewing machine stitched all the leather straps successfully but was at it's limit at 9 ounces thickness and struggled quite a bit.
07:12 Discussing relation between leather thickness, hardness and the ability of the sewing machine to penetrate the leather.
08:10 Talking about some of the common sewing machine problems like bird's nest, needle not penetrating, sewing machine jams, sewing machine going too fast.
08:43 Talking about the fact that the Singer Heavy Duty can cannot sew threads thicker than 0.3mm (size 69) with leather. This is because there are no corresponding leather needles to be found. This is disappointing because we would like thicker threads that are more strong and visible.

I saw that Schmetz makes a 120/90 needle that works with T90 thread that will fit a Singer. I have a bunch of V92 thread that I have used on my Singer 6680 Heavy Duty with a Jeans needle with ok results. If the 120/90 needle fits my machine shouldn't I theoretically be able to use the V92 thread, if you are saying what limits you to V69 is the needle size of 110/18? I would really like to use the thread I have on hand. I learned more in your video than anything I have seen to date. Thanks for sharing! ps...I have a Granny Wheel on the way, too!

Really clever idea. The thing that I would be concerned about is the wheel changing the weighting on the motor. When using it normally, that spins on the shaft like a flywheel. Have you looked into how that impacts the longevity of the motor? Hypothetically it might eat power when starting, but add power with momentum once the machine is at speed, but put extra force on the motor when stopping. It looks light weight enough that it's not immediately obvious it would have a huge impact, but I'd be curious to see what the long term use looks like on the motor compared to a machine without the wheel. In any case, this is a very innovative solution. At the very least, you could use this idea to convert a burned out machine into a fully manual one, and that might even allow for modification to the needle mechanism to use bigger needles than the factory limitations. Since the power of the electrical motor would no longer be an issue, you could hypothetically use any needle you want. Great thinking, and great video. You did an excellent job explaining what you did, and how you thought of it.

Thank you very much ! So, the Granny Wheel is permanently fixed on my sewing machine ever since about June 2021, when I developed the first prototype. On average I use the sewing machine about 3-4 hours a week. So, far so good, there does not seem to be any negative effect on the motor. Concerning your idea of using it to convert a burnt out electric sewing machine into a manual sewing machine. You are spot on about that. Every electric sewing machine actually has the full mechanism of a manual sewing machine inside of it and this can and should be taken advantage of !

@@grannywheels It's a brilliant idea. I am just learning, and have found turning the wheel very useful, and as you mentioned in the video, it takes a toll on the hands after awhile. Especially for someone my vintage, that has not been kind to my joints with motorcycles and cars. I can see exactly where using bigger muscle groups would be much better for the hands and wrists. It's a game changer, and opens a lot of doors creatively. You did a great job laying it out, and designing it too. Very good use of resources, and the clean simplicity of it is really sharp.

The gears in these machines are plastic. The machine is not made for regular sewing on thick leather. Any all steel vintage Singer would be a better choice. You can even get a new cast iron and steel hand crank to fit vintage Singers for something like $30.00. The original Singer design will sew three stitches for each turn of the crank and you turn it away from you instead of toward you like this wheel. The old style crank makes sewing with a hand crank an effortless proposition. I have a 100 year old domestic Singer, cast iron body and all high carbon steel mechanisms that has no problem sewing the thickest materials including leather and if I wanted a handwheel on it, a new cast iron and steel handwheel would be the route I would go..
