Our MOW train found another issue with one of the turnouts. This time we have to do some more troubleshooting and then some soldering to get it fixed.

This has to be the most creative I've seen to work on a model layout, actually work on the tracks but have fun doing it, I like that

When you said you don’t want the layout to catch fire I said but it would make for good content 😂

These glitches can be sooo frustrating, but also very satisfying if you find the fix!

Peco's new unifrog design eliminates this issue, but for any turnout with hinged points, I always solder a strand from a wire across the gap between the points and the stockrail. They usually work fine on new, unpainted turnouts, but turn into a nightmare once you get paint and scenery (water/glue) in there.

I don’t rely on the points for power routing at all. I do a full DCC conversion so I do not require insulated rail joiners. It is not hard to do. Charlie on the Chadwick Railway pointed out that the Peco point rails can shift, pull away from the frog area. He shims the area in the throw bar to keep that from happening.

Sometimes little jobs like that are the difference of running trains or thumping the layout to get the engine across the frog ……I’m an n scaler so a good thump can roll an engine over! B.

I use Peco insulfrog turnouts. I have about 10 of them and never had trouble with them.

Love your vids… didn’t care for this camera work on this one. Tripod shot would have been ok vs. back of hand. Keep them coming! :)

I've often thought that those little wires aren't robust enough. Surely droppers either side would do the same job?

It seems to me that at 10:32 you are testing the wrong two tracks for the direction of the points.

I think you are correct. I saw that after I did the video.

That is a joint there, so I am not sure soldering it is a good idea. A few switches and I would expect the solder to fracture. The original has a tiny filament wire across the gap.

the spot I soldered is not a movable joint. its a gap that has the wired pre soldered. I think I cut the wires before I installed the turnout. that's why I had to solder that gap.
