Really interesting video. I've enjoyed the posts about this particular project of yours, Kyle. I shoot film almost exclusively, but have recently purchased a second hand Fuji x100 (the original model). It's really super and I'm enjoying using it immensely. It's interesting watching this as you go for a consistent look between film and digital, and what the basis of the process is for that when working with the images shot on the Fuji. It's also great to hear photographers talk about their images and the reasons for the tweaks being done in post, etc. Thanks for posting. Cheers

Matt L it’s interesting to see how many film photographers find Fuji x series compelling. I shoot on a mamiya rz67 and a linhof large format camera, and noticed that I never picked up my Sony unless it was for work. I decided to switch to a Fuji camera, and it’s amazing to finally feel like I want to grab it every time I leave the house. Im sure the form factor has a lot to do with it, but those film simulations make it so much fun too.

Hi Kyle, excellent video. You can also process raw files using fuji's x raw studio which does it in in camera with the camera attached to your pc. It also allows you to do shadow and highlight adjustments, sharpness, grain effect etc. This gives you the actual fuji simulation rather than the lightroom interpretation
@peterjan7878
@peterjan7878 4 жыл бұрын
But this processing in camera will result in a jpeg, right? Which you then have to edit like you would normally do with the raw? (Cropping, straighten, etc.) But editing a jpeg is not the best thing to do. Perhaps I misunderstood?
@pracman61
@pracman61 4 жыл бұрын
@@peterjan7878 Yes, the end result is a jpeg but you are effectively editing a raw file in camera and more often than not you end up with a jpeg that requires minimal adjustment in lightroom. If you make big color adjustments to a jpeg you can end up with issues such as banding so if you want to heavily manipulate a file I would do it on a raw file
@peterjan7878
@peterjan7878 4 жыл бұрын
@@pracman61 I think so too. Jpeg is 8 bits right? Perhaps a way to do serious work on the generated jpeg file is to save the jpeg as 16 bits tiff first and then work on the tiff file instead of the jpeg?

I'm super impressed with the results of the kodachrome and portra recipes i've tried thus far from fujixweekly, and enjoying cutting down on the post processing. Only drawback about shooting with a digital Fuji is that when reviewing a shot, the LCD will display or apply the film simulation over the file, even if you shot RAW only. I know most camera companies do apply some enhancements to what is shown on the LCD / EVF, but I find that Fuji’s is rather pronounced. Any way to turn off this feature, or film simulation settings to be more RAW-like?

Hi Kyle, thanks for the video. I'm often in the situation you're in since I shoot both with my Bronica ETRSi (usually Fuji Pro400H) and with my X-T1. I edit my Fuji RAW files in ACR and I do as well start my editing with the Chrome profile for daylight shots. One thing you didn't mention is the method of sharpening you apply to both your film and digital files because certainly sharpening too can drastically affect the look of the image. I think I saw as you were quickly scrolling up and down in the develop panel that you apply a little bit of sharpening in Lightroom. Are you sharpen your digital files even more later in photoshop after being converted as TIFFs or are you content with the initial sharpening in the RAW file? And how do you sharpen your scans? I guess not in scanner but later in PS. However I have found that the Smart Sharpening filter in PS doesn't work well with scanned files and instead I use the High Pass filter which I find that has a more tactile effect. Do you agree? What's your method?
@KyleMcDougall
@KyleMcDougall 4 жыл бұрын
All depends on the output, really. For digital files output for web use, I don't usually do any sharpening other than the default settings in LR. And the 'Sharpen for screen, on low' during export. For printing I'll do a few different things. If you watch my prepping images for print video I go over that. For film scans it all depends as well. Lab scans are usually pretty sharp if it's medium format, for home scans I usually have to apply a lot of sharpening, both in LR, and then later in PS.

Really nice work. Thanks for the tutorial. I had some nice “light and airy” type results with my iPhone and Lightroom mobile by doing something similar: sunny daylight, exposure up, warm it up etc. Just a question though - if the Classic Chrome’s lack of saturation was holding you back for the night shots but it had the right colour base, why didn’t you use that as a base then give it a slight saturation boost? Maybe you already tried it and didn’t like the results?
@KyleMcDougall

I'm actually not a big fan of 'Classic chrome's' look for twilight stuff. I find it takes the warmth out of the twilight colours and pushes them to teal/cyan (which I love for my daylight stuff).

Nice video Kyle. I’m a film shooter who bought a Fuji X-T30 just a few weeks ago, so your video came a just the right time. Thinking about trying to match the files to my favorite film, T-Max 400. I don’t use Lightroom, but heard great things about Capture One pro, especially the grain simulation. Grain is probably a bit more pronounced in (35mm) TMY than your 120 colour neg film, but what’s your opinion on the simulated grain in your images? Have you tried C1 pro?
@KyleMcDougall
@KyleMcDougall 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tim. I haven’t tried C1 Pro yet. LR has been working just fine for me so that’s what I stick with. As for the simulated grain, I’ve been happy with the settings so far that I showed in this video. I’d probably tweak a bit when I go to print, but fairly happy overall with the LR simulations.

I go back and forth between scanning myself and getting a lab to do it. I enjoy the control that I have myself, but I don't enjoy the amount of time it takes, and also the fact that a flatbed scanner can struggle at times depending on the size of the negative as well as the density. For the most part, I'll be sticking with a lab. I use a lab in Toronto right now, but have been happy with scans from The Find Lab.

hi, i recently bought an xpro 1 and can’t figure out how to get my flash photos to match my contax g2 flash photos. you have any tips on that? thank you!

Hey there, sorry, don’t have any experience using flash on the G2.
@nofacedetected

You didn't ask me, but using flash on film in general I find it's really hard to blow my highlights even if I over light. That kind of look where there's "too much" flash but it hold the highlight detail might be kind of impossible to replicate on digital in a way that's satisfying. Not sure if this helps. If I'm right and that's what you're trying to do, I'd underexposure or expose "correctly" on the Fuji with flash and pull up the highlights and mids a bit in post. Again, I don't shoot digital very much and might be misunderstanding your question. I've only ever used studio strobe with pocket wizards with my g1 where I totally obsessed over exposure settings way too much... Which is to say that my flash objectives are probably different from yours.

Of course man! Your channel inspired me to go out and shoot in a different way, so much so I started a new IG page (@EmmanuelDriveIn) with a southwestern theme to it. I also want to start making videos about my adventures here too!. Just wanted to say thanks for sharing the secrets. It rekindled my love for photographing the Southwest. I am extremely thankful. 🤙🤙🤙

You should make lightroom preset film pack.
@KyleMcDougall
@KyleMcDougall 4 жыл бұрын
Feel like that would be tough to do just based on how I edit different lighting condition. I could always make one as a starting point for people and just link it up for free download. If that helps.
