This is what happened to Zack Hughes, the KZfaqr who was a green beret. He was 3 hours into land nav, when he realizes he didn’t have his rifle. He left it at a tree and had to hike all the way back, but he was fortunate enough to find where he left it and NO ONE picked it up

I am not sure if this is from Zack Hughes, but I remember a similar story from somewhere, and I am pretty sure it was Zack. Stating that he lost his rifle then hiked back into "headquarters" sneaking in, and finding a bunch of rifles, where he picked one up, snuck out back into the woods and continued.

@Yama Forough first off good for you for getting your life straightened out and moving towards a better goal. I can't give you the best advice because I honestly don't know how your past will affect your career progression. I would start off with deciding weither being an officer or enlisted is your best option, they are very different positions. I'll give you a hint though, officers work long hours but there pay and quality of life is much higher than enlisted.

I jumped into camp Mckall in1970 for what was then called phase 1 of SF training. We each had an M-14. We lived with that rifle 24/7. We had the same type of large tents with multiple cots we stayed in the first week or so. One Sunday afternoon we had a little time off. Candidates were attending to various personal issues. I was in the tent along with a few people, but some had left the tent and left their weapons. One guy had to go to the outhouse and asked me to watch his weapon. Well, all of a sudden a cadre sergeant burst through the front door and gathered up about 6 M-14's and ran out the back door. I felt responsible and thought I was going to get terminated right then and there. But he dropped all the weapons in a pile outside and went into the back door of the next tent. I grabbed the weapons and brought them back inside; everyone came running, got their weapons, and nobody got terminated. Lots of good and brave people fail to make it through. I was fortunate, but half of our class was gone at the end of phase one; 4 weeks later.

Well...I'm glad I'm not the ONLY one!! 🤣 In 1981, I was a tanker. I had a .45 sidearm in a shoulder holder. The tanks were online performing live fire operations when a fire burst out downrange, and the company loaded into trucks and APCs and charged downrange to put out the fires. Now these flames were BIG! Some were 20 feet high...the brush was alight all around us...I was trying to put out the flames with my shovel, but the weapon kept hitting me in my face! I ran over to the APC, and tossed into the top opening...running back to fight the fire....When next I looked, an NCO had jumped into the APC and was doing donuts in the brush...attempting to put out the fires...I ran over, and waved him down, opened the back hatch, and saw my weapon on the floor of the APC. SECURED. GOOD! 😉 The fires now out, and we all clambered back into the track to return. I grabbed my weapon, and put it on. It wasnt fitting well. The holster was too long! I checked the number on the grip. 67. Mine was 38. Who's was THIS?!! Kinder was panicking, looking for his weapon...I offered it up. Where was MINE?!! We searched all through the APC. No weapon. The CID came in. Many hours of questioning...the Engineer company came in...with metal detectors. After 3 days of searching, one of the Engineers found my gun a muddy ditch made by Roderick doing donuts... I wasnt given an Article 15, or reprimand...I was eaten up by the company though. Lots of angry soldiers being told they were going to be retained at summer camp UNTIL the pistol showed up!! They weren't happy.. I was 18. I'm sure we arent the only 2 in the whole US. Army to screw up something like this! Believe me...I KNOW how you felt!!! God Bless.

Recently had this issue also. Company commander left his sidearm in the porta-can and presumably one of the servicing contractors picked it up…needless to say, it never turned up. But whole company was put in lockdown in the motor pool searching for this M17 until Day 29 before Family Sep pay took effect. They couldn’t see families, order food or leave the area during that time. The madness doesn’t stop, and as the most seasoned Soldiers in our ranks say, “there’s a method behind the madness.” Painful moments do breed conditioned Soldiers, as much as some others would disagree.

IF you don't, then you will regret it for the rest of your life, because you will always wonder what might have been? You made a mistake, but you didn't quit! IF you go back, do not quit, ever. Do not accept defeat, and IF you go back and earn your long tab, Do not ever become complacent, because selection is a never ending process. Just think if you were downrange and made an error like that! Your mission and your mates are dependent upon your commitment and resolve. You have to have your head in the game, and get through the next five minutes. That is your mission: complete the next evolution, and then focus on the next. Keep doing that until you have that beret in your hand.

The shortest Army contract I'm aware of is 3 years, however the Q course is at least 2 years, so all 18X contracts are for 5 years to account for this training, there isn't a way around this unfortunately. You may have a few opportunities to go home, over breaks, 4 day weekends or Christmas. Once you graduate (I didn't graduate so this is my best guess) you most likely go straight to your unit. Once there they may allow you to take Leave but I would plan on not seeing your family much during your Q course time.

As a civilian you shouldn't even be thinking about the SF PT test because that is a long ways away. Your goal should be getting as fit as you can for Basic Training and just going. Your goal is to do a perfect 300 PT as that will make life easier, but all you have to be able to do is the minimum to get in, then keep busting your butt to make sure you are better as you go. I say this because if you wait until you can 70 pushup and 12 minute 2 mile you may never go. I ran faster than I ever have in my life in selection, nearly half the time I ran as a civilian. My advice is if you want to do it, get into the army first with the contract, then work to stay in.

Is it better to go 18x or 11x and then drop an SF packet to get to selection?
@JohnS6774 ай бұрын
They both have pros, cons, and risks. If you go 18x during a time when they are re-classing dropouts, you risk becoming whatever MOS the army wants you to be. I was an 18x, went through 11B OSUT, airborne, and SOPC, and got dropped in Selection and reclassed to a Mechanic. If you go 11B then you have to get your superiors to sign-off on your paperwork to send you to Selection. I never tried the latter, but it's easy to get caught up in grunt life and forget about pushing yourself to go 18 series or to start doubting yourself. There's no right answer, you just have to decide which risks you want to take.
@18x-wv6jc4 ай бұрын
@@JohnS677 thanks for the advice I have a neck tattoo that I had to get an ETP waiver for, the battalion commander said that it might interfere with selection and I could get peer reviewed. Funny story I found dudes journal in a plastic bag on the bank of the swamp that was an old rifle range. So I went riding around lookin for the cadre. I found them and they where pissed that I would just walk up and interfere with selection. Then I handed them the journal and I got a front row seat to see the man that owned it get absolutely DESTROYED they told me to tell "YOU LET ME KILL YOUR WHOLE FAMILY!" at him. Thank you for your service sir, your a better man than me for attempting that brutal program. I've seen those guys out there in the winter neck deep in a swamp tore all to pieces by brairs, covered in ticks, drinking water from those hot ass camo tanks they just leave in the sun in the summer time, and every other North Carolina nightmare I don't wish on anybody. If you ever try again and see a blue truck riding around out in Pineland I got a hot adult beverage with your name on it.

You failed once, you can still go another 2 times before you get NTR (Never To Return). If you want it, get after it, you can do whatever you want if you put your mind to it.

Seeing a lot of comments about tying down your rifle. It’s not allowed. If a sitter sees it they can call it in or if cadre notice. It’s a risk, and worth it in my opinion, but be careful. This is as of June 2021 class
@JohnS6772 жыл бұрын
Ha! I bet! Good luck to you! I'm glad to hear you got selected.

Never take another dudes rifle because they’ll always come back for it. Unfortunate for you man that guy sucks. I got selected and had left my rifle 600m behind me. Showed up at the next point and realized as the sitter was marking my stuff I didn’t have it. No scarier point in my life and I hauled ass back to find it.

How was your experience at sfas? I'm currently deployed but planning to go when I get back which will be in April next year. Any info you can provide is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Could you have not retired selection or did you just move on? Also I'm in the process of enlisting and I just need/want to raise my asvab scores. My GT is a 77 CO was a 76 AFQT was a 11 Not good scores I know, do you have any tips on study wise? Like what segment should I focus on to enlist as 18X? I'm also taking a practice ASVAB September 30th to see where I'm at.
@JohnS6774 жыл бұрын
I just googled practice ASVAB tests online and I did some free ones that way. I had a six month return date and they wouldn't keep me there so I had to go through getting reclassed and all that but I can go back now.

@@JohnS677 I just took a pre asvab and got a 30 so I am improving but, the recruiter said I was too you to enlist as 18X. I'm 18 and soon to be 19 in 2 months. Is he BSing or do I actually need to wait?
@JohnS6774 жыл бұрын
When I went through you had to be 20 by the time you got to selection. If you have questions you can always Google a Special Operations recruiter and ask them.

Dummy Cord your rifle to you. Not only does it protect you from forgetting to pick your weapon up, but also protects you if you ever fall down a ravine at night and lose the weapon.

Yeah, someone asked if we could do that and we where told no. I was so scared of doing something wrong and getting dropped that I didn't, obviously that would be a decision I would change if I went back.

No, if you fail you're needs of the army. If you are willing to put enough blood sweat and tears into it you might get a chance to become a Ranger.
