Don't know if anybody's already said this, but tips from a sound mixer here... you can angle the mic toward the mouth for better clarity and higher S/N (signal to noise ratio). In this particular scenario where you don't have any wind to fight, you can also remove that foam windscreen to get the mic that much closer, again increasing your S/N and reducing how much work the reverb reduction plugin is doing. Use of sound absorbing blankets everywhere out of frame will also help dramatically change the amount of reverb captured. It sounded fine, by the way, just suggesting ways to improve it further!
@damiencooper
@damiencooper Жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot to the suggestions. I actually angle the mic slightly away from the mouth on purpose to not pick up mouth noises. Same goes for the windshield indoors. I found it reduced pop and hissing sounds. Thoughts on this? As for the sound blankets. The interview was so wide that I felt it wouldn’t have done anything

Damien, this was so good. Your decision to talk about every aspect of the interview setup is so appreciated. I'm curious about the double diffusion. How does moving that second diffusion layer further away affect the light ... and how did you settle on the two-foot gap we see here?
@damiencooper
@damiencooper Жыл бұрын
appreciate it. My plan is to do a lot more like these in the future. The frame was moved as close to the subject as possible without being in the frame. The Light itself was moved away from the cloth so that it covered the entire frame. If it would have been closer (like touching the frame) there would've been no benefit to using it over the parabolic softbox

@damiencooper
@damiencooper Жыл бұрын
Lav mics usually have less echo than shotgun mics. Especially longer shotgun mics which are ade for outdoors rather than indoors. That's why I said I wanted to use my shorter shotgun mic
@nordfilmcompany
@nordfilmcompany Жыл бұрын
@@damiencooper In my experience the omni directional lav mics that I use are hard to manipulate to avoid picking up reverb as it is omni directional. But using short shotguns as you did, I'm able to angle the mic away from the surfaces close to the mic and avoid most of the rooms reverb. Using short shotguns also helps avoiding phasing which larger shotguns have a tendency to pick up due to the longer shaft. And short ones also have a tendency to pick up less behind the mic. When I boom a directional shotgun and face it towards the floor it may pick up more reverb then my lav mics, but if I place the shotgun close and angle it towards a wall further away and in the direction of the person speaking, it gives me less reverb then my lav mic when I'm indoors.

There are several AI-powered audio denoising plugins that are compatible with Premiere Pro and may help remove echo from audio recordings: iZotope RX: This is a professional audio repair and restoration software that includes a feature called "Dialogue De-reverb" that can effectively remove unwanted reverb and echo from audio recordings. Accusonus ERA 5: This plugin includes a feature called "Reverb Remover" that uses AI algorithms to remove unwanted reverb and echo from audio recordings. Waves NS1 Noise Suppressor: This plugin uses intelligent algorithms to automatically detect and remove background noise and reverberation from audio recordings. Adobe Audition: Premiere Pro's companion audio editing software, Adobe Audition, includes several features for noise reduction and audio restoration, including a "DeReverb" effect that can reduce the echo and reverb from audio recordings. It's always important to keep in mind that these plugins may not work perfectly in all situations and may require some manual tweaking to achieve the best results. Additionally, removing too much echo can make the audio sound unnatural, so it's important to use these tools judiciously and with a critical ear.

It looks like a shotgun on the boom, if so, not a mic best suited for interiors with poor acoustics. The mic is pointing straight down, is that best for maximum pickup? I know you also had a lav, so maybe the overhead was for safety? I much prefer a cardioid mic as opposed to a lav for all interiors. I also place a deep pile carpet under the chair for that little extra acoustic dampening.

I agree with David Minard's comments about mic and room treatments. Saves a lot of time in post, and bad audio still doesn't sound right if the audio is reverberating on the shoot. I'd say it's better to get the audio right in the can in the first place, or think twice about shooting in the venue or doing something to fix this issue before you shoot. So much bad audio out there it's astonishing that some people still relegate this to an incidental afterthought or accept compromises justified by "fix it in post." I would add that perhaps a proper dialog mic like a small diaphragm condenser hyper-cardiod might have been a better choice than a shotgun indoors because a true shotgun has a rear node that picks up the reverb from the ceiling. Check the polar pattern of your shotguns to confirm this characteristic. I use an Audio Technica AT4053B on a boom pole for my interviews Zoom meetings, and it sounds fantastic. Worth every bit of the current $700 price. You've got a lot invested in the cameras, which most shooters do, but leave the audio to budget-oriented decisions. I would have done just the opposite. For interviews, I'd budget more for the audio than the video, although the picture looks gorgeous, especially with soft FX filters and the soft lighting, but i'd emphasize audio in the budget mix for gear so have pristine audio for unmatched intelligibility. After all, the bulk of the information in a video interview is imparted by dialog, so isn't the clarity of the audio actually more important the video? Many sound pros do not use a shotgun indoors at all because of this reverb issue coming from the rear node. I also agree with many of the comments that your video is one of the best at breaking down how and why you shoot your interviews. I'm just picking at the few points i thought might use some improvement to take your work to the next level. I hope this was helpful and taken as constructive as it is intended.

Thanks for the long and very thoughtful comment. And I pretty much agree with everything. I did mention I usually use a different mic which is a small hyper cardiod for these situations. However, my personal problem is that audio isn’t my strongest suite. And by that I don’t necessarily mean the skill but I just don’t hear a difference. I have listened to plenty of samples comparing different mics in all kinds of situations and price ranges and I can barely tell a difference but I will put more thought into room treatment from now on. The fact that a lot of people specifically commented about how good the audio was under the original documentary kinda confirms I’m not the only one not having the right ear for it. Which isn’t really an excuse or a justification. Just found it interesting

I had both. But I found the original Canon conversion luts with a creative luts worked best. You can check out my color grading C70 video to see my workflow

@@damiencooper Ahh. I bought them months ago. I was trying them on Clog3. I'll try again as creative LUTs on already color corrected footage now. All Good.
