As much as I wish I had sent my dog to Brandon for training before bringing him home kzfaq.infoUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU I am so grateful for this down-to-earth, practical guide. I love that y’all are so transparent and showing the reality of training dogs. It makes regular people like me who aren’t dog trainers (though I try to follow all your advice from your videos) not feel as inadequate; even professionals like you and Bree struggle too. It’s relatable and authentic.

Oh Zak I'm a bit offended that you didn't take your own advice, but had me taking numerous lengthy trips outside in all sort of weather this past winter with my puppy. Torrential rain, wind, snow, ice and sub arctic temperatures. Standing outside for 20 plus minutes waiting for her to realize the wind blowing tarps in the dark wasn't going to hurt her, as my hands froze for her to do nothing and have to repeat the process 5 minutes later because I knew she really had to go! But we had zero accidents, you said they have to learn to go out in all weather, take your own advice good luck with Veronica and small "project". We'll be waiting for you in the north east! 😂🐾

We removed all rugs and as our puppy moved in in May (and we live in England), we could leave the back door open and she went out with our other dogs. She pretty much trained herself.

Wow, a seeing how you failed video was INVALUABLE. It was a clear demonstration of the value of the "right" way to do it and avoid the problems you showed. You can read about problems and it doesn't make much impact, but when you SEE the problems it becomes clear. Extremely valuable. Thanks.

It was so funny to see Zak and Inertia trying to steal each other's food :-). This episode was great. I love the honesty. It's really helpful to see training mistakes because most of us are amateur trainers and make all kinds of mistakes. Having you be open about them and talking about what went wrong and how to fix it is much more valuable than seeing perfect training sessions, because in the average home, those are probably not so common.

We did an embark test on our shelter dog because he was such a mystery. His coat is brindle and he is the size of a large chihuahua with a short smooth coat weighing in at 20#. His makeup is 50% chihuahua, 30% Pomeranian, 10% Lhasa Ahpso, 9% cocker spaniel and 1% wolf! And, he swims like a lab!

One of our pound puppies sounds similar to yours! He's 18lbs, brindled, and you can kind of see some chihuahua in him, but sometimes looks like a miniature boxer. His brother (from the same litter) weighs about the same, but is shorter and stockier, and reminds me of a pug-mix. Their mother looked like a yorkie. I've been debating dna tests on the two of them, sounds like it might be a good idea!

Hi ya Zac, from Australia. Love ya work! I have learnt a lot from your videos. Thank you for all your free content. My 11 week old Toy Poodle had a regression with pottying as I expanded her indoor area to include the kitchen. She has been trained on grass & fake grass on a tray. When she has an accident inside she is super quick & I can be right 'there' & it's all over by the time I bend down to pick her up. Tricky.......Thanks again.

A 3 month old male Australian Shepherd puppy just joined my family. He had lived outside and the breeder said the parents were AKC registered. I met the parents, both appeared in good health. My new puppy had not seen a vet and had been treated once for worms. So took him to the vet as soon as her office opened. Got first set of vaccinations, 3 days of de-worming treatment and heart-worm and flea treatment. The little guy was a little sick, but as the de-worming progressed, he is doing much much better. The first day, it was like he was already house broken. Now we are having a few accidents, but that's to be expected. Zak, I have watched about 20 of your videos and ordered the books. I did that before getting our new addition, Remi. Remi and I are using your methods and it has really helped us. Thank you! He really loves the freeze-dried chicken treats too. I have a new shadow and his name is Remi!

I discovered that we seem to be more tolerant of negative behaviors, such as potting in the house, with small dogs than we are with larger dogs. Biscuits was a very small dog compared with the others you have been training, so I get that you allowed her more freedom.

Hey! Zak & Bree! Love your videos & methods. Your patience and understanding are AWESOME. My pups are just 10 week old, Miniature Poodles. Here's a thought for a video (One I NEED and would surely Love) When we went to get our new puppy (after 8 months mourning our 16 years old Mini Poodle's passing) I just soaked up so much puppy wonderfulness....we came home with 2! I was thinking how much easier it would be for them sleeping together, adjusting to us together, how they would comfort one another. etc! Totally forgetting how completely EXHAUSTING to is keeping up with 2 high energy babies, and all the broken sleep for 2 senior parents! Any duel pup households would really, REALLY, benefit from some tips & pointers, our babies would benefit the most. Can't wait for the teething chews you suggested to arrive. Did you say MONTHS for house breaking to last??? OMG!!

Hey Zak and Bree, I have a question unrelated to the video. I was wondering if you ever used target training, I couldn't find any videos of you using or explaining the concept, you seem to mostly rely on luring. I was wondering if there's a reason for this or if it's just a personal preference? I'm getting a puppy in 1.5 months and I like the idea of transitioning the target training into "come when called" to have the dog always touch me when I call it. Is this a good idea, or might this be demanding too much of the dog in the long run? It would be interesting to see you make a video on this since it's about the only training concept I haven't been able to find you talking about. Love your vids, I watched all of your recent series in preparation for my pup and they've helped me tremendously in brushing up on my training skills so thank you both for all that free content. I may or may not have cried just as much as you when you dropped off a certain George. I'm not saying there were paper towels involved but there were paper towels involved.

Hi love ur videos! Here is a thought for you.. I have 3 new pups.. 2 came from a breeder who used concert as a nursery and never went outside in the yard to play. They pooped, ate and slept all in the same area till sold...potty training was very difficult! They would not eliminate on the grass at all! They went number 1 & 2 on my driveway! It took me 5 months to potty train them... 1 puppy came from a breeder who was raised in their home and taken outside as a puppy everyday to play and to eliminate at a very young age..it only took me 2 weeks to potty train this puppy! Wow what a big difference... what are ur thoughts? I belive puppies raised in a nursery without an outside inviroment till sold has a very strong impact on their potty training difficulties.

We adopted a pup several weeks ago. She’s Maltese, poodle And soft coated wheaten terrier (dna test). We’ve watched all your videos on puppy biting. I cannot get her to stop biting! She bites and tears making my arms bleed several times a day. When she’s playing in the yard she will run, jump up and bite into my legs. She spends most of her awake time biting, snapping and growling. I’ve tried everything you’ve suggested; nothing works. Any other ideas? I have to be completely covered anytime I’m around her to not bleed and even then those teeth go through. She’s another two weeks from formal puppy training class (because of vac status).

He will not go in front of us and I have him outside for hours at a time. We have 4 kids so I can’t always have him on a leash but he will only go to the bathroom inside, I pull him outside every time I catch him but he’s just not getting it.. any tips? He’s also super stealthy he’ll be on his leash and I won’t here him pee until there’s a puddle.

I don't even feel a little bad for you about potty training :P I'm in Michigan and we brought our puppy home on the coldest day of winter, temps were hitting as low as -10 to -20 F and this dog went every minutes. We had alarms running so we could be consistent and sometimes he wouldn't even make it to 10 minutes. Vet said nothing wrong and all my previous dogs potty trained in 1-2 weeks so I felt falsely confident. It was a very cold winter and he couldn't hold it past 30 minutes until 5 months and took until 6 months to be reliably what I would consider potty trained. We tried everything even our vet was totally stumped. (Bissel's spotbot kept us from wanting to strangle his cute puppy self)

My dog doesn’t potty in his crate, and will potty outside. But he won’t let me know when he needs to go once he’s outside the crate. And will potty anywhere in the house except my room I don’t know what to do anymore

I got a Mini Goldendoodle 2 weeks ago, he is 12 weeks old and he still doesn’t respond to his name, doesn’t respond to any commands, I tried with treats and he’s not really food motivated, he plays for 5 mins and goes back to his crate, he eats and goes back to his crate. I can’t take him out yet bc he is not fully vaccinated. Potty inside the house is gotten better but after it he goes to his crate. I need help! Any recommendations? He aways seems scared.

My puppy is now 8 months. He’s still not trained. He has crate anxiety so can’t use it. He starts pooping all over himself and his crate all of a sudden while he’s in there. He’s an all white poodle. I need help. Or puppy has to go.

Is it possible that picking the puppy up while he's having an accident is not a good idea for really small dogs? I caught my Chi pup of 4 months pooing on the floor and - without shouting or anger - just went up to him and picked him up and put him on his designated toilet. I was very gentle but swift. Still I seemed to have startled him and ever since then he seems to be a little afraid of me, which breaks my heart.

@@mintchimp4203 What's Wrong With the Prong? Myths and Facts Alternatives to Prong Collars Top 10 Reasons Not to Use Scientific Studies... Taken directly from SPCA website They’re painful and inhumane. Despite what some trainers or store employees might tell you, driving metal prongs into your dog’s neck HURTS! Under their fur, the skin on dogs’ necks is actually significantly thinner than human skin. Although eliciting sudden sharp pain may provide a quick fix in the moment, the effects are usually short-lived. 2. They suppress behavior, but don’t change it. The fear and pain elicited when the dog feels the prong collar being pulled may temporarily stop his pulling/lunging/etc., but it doesn’t teach him what he should be doing instead. Suppression of instinctual behaviors can lead to learned helplessness, redirected aggression, and physical issues. So train your dog what TO DO (e.g.; calmly walk next to you), instead of using pain and fear to tell him only what NOT to do. 3. There are more humane alternatives. For every situation in which dog owners claim that control is provided by a prong collar, a head collar or a front-attachment harness is the better, safer and more humane choice. These harness options take some time and training to use correctly, but the payoff is big. They’re more effective and you’ll have a better relationship with your dog! 4. Because you love your dog! If you don’t want to cause your dog pain and discomfort, then don’t use prong collars. 5. Prongs create negative associations. Anything present in the environment when your dog experiences the pain of a prong collar can take on a negative association, including other dogs, children and strangers. This does the exact OPPOSITE of what we want - it makes dogs more reactive, and more likely to lunge toward or be fearful of triggers! 6. They build fear and discomfort, and damage your relationship with your dog.Prongs (and other aversive, confrontational training techniques) are painful! If every time you walk with or train your dog, he is experiencing pain and discomfort, pretty soon your presence is going to be associated with pain and discomfort. Wouldn’t you rather your dog trust and feel safe with you? 7. Prong collars can result in side effects such as depression, disempowerment, redirected aggression, deterioration of social relationships, and more. Use pain and fear-inducing methods on your dog for long enough, and you can see a significant decrease in your dog’s quality of life, energy, and health. 8. Because they are archaic - obsolete, old-fashioned and behind-the-times! Fear- and pain-based devices like this may have been the norm 30 years ago, but they do not have any place in modern, 21st-century dog training. Today, responsible trainers and owners make choices based on science and proven facts about canine learning and communication to interact with their dogs through positive reinforcement. It’s more effective, more humane, and more fun! 9. Many civilized countries have outlawed prong collars, recognizing the harm they can do! New Zealand, Austria, Australia, Switzerland, the Canadian Province of Quebec, and many others have made prong collars (and in many cases choke and shock collars) illegal. Let’s joi this trend! 10. They are simply NOT necessary; there are better ways to train

@@messengers4198 zak isn't for either. Every trainer is different. I personally am for both of those, but it also depends on the dog. Some dogs don't respond well to them, some do. But I won't bash anyone that has different views.

We have a new puppy, she's officially 5 months old, and she picks up on all new trainings so easily and quickly. But potty training has been the worse. She is too smart for her own good. She does go outside. But when she is mad at us, she deliberately goes inside, when she does see a pad that has one pee spot, she refuses to use it and goes next to the pad instead. Training her has been soooo frustrating. She's training to be a service dog so I need her to learn to not go in the house. I know it may take another 5 months before she's remotely near trained. Which is normal. Trying to get the whole house on hand to take her out every hour to two hours and if she doesn't go, come in for no more than 5 -10 minutes, bring her back out. I want to eventually train them to use a "potty chair" or pee pad in the bathroom for when I can't get them out, due to my disability. This video kind of does help. Thank you

What if you gave them too much freedom the first few days home and you want to restrict the freedom because they keep going potty in the living room. Is it too late to restrict the freedom to the one room that is theirs? She cries when her freedom is restricted but I want her to adapt
