For me , shifting 1-5 is between 1000 -1300 6-10 shift at no higher than 1700 to account for the RPM DROP. ( this is if you are watching the RPMS.) you actually wanna be able to shift by ear when u learn your truck . Happy trucking guys

One company told me they switched to automatics because there was better fuel efficiency. Our instructor told us automatics are more complex, of course, so maintenance costs are more when needed.

Indeed, automatics are more prevalent these days but manual transmission are cost effective (when u know how to shift properly) I get excellent MPG driving a manual; this is dependent on the driver.

@@FaroutTruckin That makes sense. Seems like someone driving a manual properly could get as good efficiency as an auto. I'm new and wanted to hire on someplace that ran 10 speed day cabs for the experience. I may go with YRC even though they use autos. I do hate to not get the manual experience though.

Question when truck is overloaded how can you notice that ? And most importantly when going uphills how to downshift without loosing momentum and climb the uphill of that mountain in the right gear without making mistakes . I will definitely need right information to have a peace of mind when driving uphills how to know at what gear the truck can take the weight all the way up without a problem .

When progressively shifting, How far do you back off the throttle when shifting to Neutral then to the next higher gear? And the same question for downshifting Thx

I just got hired on to be a local fuel hauler. Gonna be driving 10 speed Freightliners. I have no DOT experience. I’ve been a trailer spotter for 4 and a half years. Been helping a farmer haul grain locally in an 05 Peterbilt 385. What commodity do you haul?

No these tanks are baffled. Smooth bore tanks will have surge.
