Drawing is so important, sometimes it doesn’t get enough attention. I know I’ve been really guilty of not wanting to practice drawing if I can paint instead, but it’s like the skeleton of an artist’s skill

You’re always gonna be a beginner in some aspect because, there’s always someone out there whose better.
@thedeafgenius
@thedeafgenius 4 жыл бұрын
@@brandenapexo604 You can't think that way especially when it comes to art.....it should be: " because, You are always learning". For example photorealism.....most established artists frown upon photorealism artists simply because cameras exist and if you asked them to do anything else....guess what, they can't.....not even a quick portrait sketch without looking like some 10 year old kid did it. So if you are not an actual artist....you shouldn't comment on something like this. But if you are an actual artist...not someone off deviantart....then you need to change your way of thinking. Comparing yourself to someone else will only hold you back unless its motivating you to do better.

Ahhhhhhhh. So excited to see this posted! I would love if you did a video where you filmed your process (from start to finish) of a painting or anything your working on, that would just be like the ASMR artist sounds. I’m not too into ASMR, but being an artist and hearing brushes hit a canvas are so satisfying- I think that would be dope. Sending my love! Xx 💛💛💛

I agree! practice practice is the key, to perfect the work. It really saddened me that I already lost my freehand drawing skills, I'm used to make art techniques like, lightbox or project that stuff, but I don't consider them tracing as cheating instead, to make my works finish fast.

Thanks for this video!! You are an incredible inspiration to me to keep working at my art. I've been thinking a lot lately about what i want to do as a lifelong career and have considered drawing for a living. I know it's definitely not a "normal" job, but it's something I love. I have gotten away from practicing but you have shown me that there are other ways to make a living in art. My style is on the more realism side, and I love to make things look like they're jumping off the page. So I just might try that route for my life and see where it leads..it's gonna be hard, but at least i'll be doing something I love!! Thanks SLEW!!

Art teacher here! LOVE your work! Don't think that you need to draw better faster. It doesn't work that way at all... You need to put in the time to add your energy and love into it. Doing rushed work is never a good idea and always comes out looking bad. You'll keep thinking "oh now it's looking trash, let me fix it" and spend sooooo mich time correcting something you could've drawn well from the start if you just took the time to do it at your own pace. Get lost in the process of it instead of trying to turn it into a race. Comparing yourself against others is pointless...your handwriting is different from someone else's, and just so your drawing/art style is as well! The more time you put into it, the more refined and detailed it will be. 👍🏻

Do you thibk that using white pencils to highlight or smeering to shade is something an academic artist should avoid?
@mariscabarnes1966
@mariscabarnes1966 4 жыл бұрын
@@milosblagojevic5899 not at all! I encourage using multiple techniques and using different mediums. It all comes down to preference. Smudging smooths out the graphite to create an even tone and greatly minimise the appearance of pencil strokes/streaks. This is useful for backgrounds, skin, and transitions to create that smooth look. It's just a fast way to fill in. Afterwards you should always go back with an eraser and darker pencils to create the highlights and shadows and bring more dynamic to your picture. White pencil is only suitable on a darker paper like Slew uses, the grey paper. Its already basically the midtone of the picture, so you'd use darker pencils or charcoal and a white pencil to bring in dark and light tones. When you're studying the behaviour of light, you can use black paper and a white pencil only to do high contrast pictures. Art is not something that's limited...it's open and free. It really comes down to preference and what your lecturer/brief lays out for the project. I also think what Slew is doing, is what we call quick sketch, when you try to draw a pose as fast as possible using gestural lines but still keeping proportions and shading and some details. It's good practice, but that's all it is. The less time you put into something, the less detailed it will be. Beating yourself up about it is pointless because quick sketch is always practice and not a final artwork. Like Slew says, it loosens up the gears and gets you into drawing mode.
@milosblagojevic5899
@milosblagojevic5899 4 жыл бұрын
@@mariscabarnes1966 interesting. My art professor tells me not to use highlights like erasing, or even smudging, only to use clean strokes or to make gradiations in values using my pencil, not my fingers. He says we are going to an art school to learn how to draw, not how to do make up xd.
@milosblagojevic5899
@milosblagojevic5899 4 жыл бұрын
@@mariscabarnes1966 but i understand also what you said. Its not prohibited in any way to use highlights or white pencil for our drawings. I agree art should be a free medium. But i also think that the method without use of any highlights, where the only highlight is the paper, makes us be more carefull where we will make dark tones or where we will keep the light ones, and it also makes us learn the importance of value diversity. Otherwise you just rely on a white pencil to do it for you.
@mariscabarnes1966
@mariscabarnes1966 4 жыл бұрын
@@milosblagojevic5899 Lol! 😅 Sure, like I said...listen to your teacher. Everyone is different, and at our school we allow all techniques and mediums, permitting they don't overpower the picture. It's easy to over-smidge a drawing and it becomes flat and dull. We teach the correct ways to use them so they compliment the drawing. Listen to your teacher, maybe later he/she will let you progress to include more techniques. It's obviously vital that you understand how to purely use pencil. Teaches focus, control, patience and attention to detail. When you're at home you can practice other techniques on your own!
