Hey Plantaholics,
I hope you are all keeping safe and practicing social distancing and self-quarantine. Take this time to spend a bit more time with your plants and stat your houseplant spring cleaning and maintenance. In this video I go through my process of getting my plants ready for the spring and upcoming growing season. I usually will start by doing a walkthrough and taking an inventory of my houseplants. This will give me an idea on which plants needs to be reorganized, who needs some repotting, watering, cleaned, soil topped up and aerated. Enjoy!

@CrazyPlantGuy
@CrazyPlantGuy 4 жыл бұрын
@@jeannelcamara919 It all depends on the plant and how big it is right now, the size of the container and it's growth rate. Usually once a year or every two years. It really depends on the plant. You can also tell if it's starting to get rootbound.

Aerating the soil is definitely important! The roots need water AND air. But digging around in the pot like that can damage the roots unnecessarily and slow growth. If it’s done on weak or sick plants it might just be the tipping point that kills them. Instead, I recommend mixing agricultural lava rock and chicken grit (crushed granite) into the soil mix when planting or repotting. Both are inorganic components and will not break down over time and compact the soil. Lava rock holds the perfect ratio of air and water and many plants thrive in it. All the little holes in the rock also provide more surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow. You can achieve a similar effect with perlite. But perlite is not as sturdy and can get crushed and break apart. It also tends to float out of the pot and create a mess when there’s a lot in the soil mix. Just some food for thought! I enjoy your vids. Keep up the good work!

For sure, you definitely want to be careful to not damage the roots when aerating. Thanks for sharing alternative ways to do this. Will try some of these tips.

Great video. I’m currently in the process of repotting my plant collection into a more chunkier “soil”. Slowly but surely getting rid of potting soil and using bark, worm castings, coco coir, activated charcoal and pumice or perlite. No aeration required and water drains beautifully. Got tire of water sitting on top and taking forever to penetrate and constantly having to aerate the soil.
@abbybeginyazova7812

planterina recommended this but it seems expensive, which brands are you using for the switch?
@justkidding7523
@justkidding7523 4 жыл бұрын
Abadan Beginyazova honestly, bark mix from miracle grow or better grow. Both brands are sold at Lowe’s and Home Depot. Pumice is extremely hard to find. Found on tiny bag in a nursery close to me but amazon carries it as well. Worm castings: my favorite is from amazon and huge bag and reasonably priced. Worm castings go a long way because you don’t need much of it in your growing medium. Maybe 10%-20%. Unco Industries (WWSB15LB) Wiggle... www.amazon.com/dp/B00062KQ42?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share Coco coir or peat: amazon carries it as well even though I haven’t bought from them yet because I have left over from a long time ago. Activated charcoal: you can literally find this at Walmart in a powder form, even though the chunkier kind is better. I find that by making my own growing medium I actually save money and it gives me peace of mind because I absolutely dread aerating the soil every week for every plant. It’s such a pain on the butt.

Thanks Christian, great video. I do a lot of the same things when spring comes, plant maintenance, moving the plants and cleaning, and relocating some plants to better lighting, cleaning the leaves, cutting off the dead or ugly leaves, removing stuff hanging out in the top of the pot, taking cuttings from some of my trailing plants to propagate. I do take a chopstick and airate the soil, I find they do so much better. I either put fresh soil in the pot that aren't ready to be potted up yet or I just repot the plant. I haven't used eggshells yet, but I have heard of putting them on top of the soil. Using a grinder is a great idea that way they are a powder and then when you water they absorb into the soil so much better. You gave us so many great tips and I am just so ready for the warmer weather. Stay safe and healthy and I will see you soon, sending hugs, bye for now.

I use Airtable to database my plants. I have them split up by locations (bathroom / bedroom / stairwell / etc) and then use it to keep track of what I’ve done (fertilized / pest control / etc) and when. I also use it to keep notes on how the plant is doing (new leaves dropping / needs repotting / etc). Since I can’t water all my plants on the same schedule, I find this app comes in handy.

I'm here in Australia. We are going to through the winter season. At the moment weather is very nice but it'll be chilly soon. Trying to prepare my plants for the next season. Any suggestion please ? Thanks anyway for the beautiful video 😊
@CrazyPlantGuy
@CrazyPlantGuy 4 жыл бұрын
Aliya Rahmati Thank you. Plants will usually grow slower and some go dormant during the winter season. I’ll usually move most of my plants closer to the window to try and give them as much light as possible. Use a grow light if needed, I also cut back on watering. My goal for winter (especially Canadian winters) is just to keep them alive and healthy for the growing season. 😆

@CrazyPlantGuy

Caster Kang hmm I just have gotten to know most of my plants..but really the way to tell is is their soul is dry and if the plant is light, then I’ll think back when the last time they were watered.

My go to soil mix is 50% regular potting mix and 50% cacti soil with a handful of perlite for extra drainage.

I really appreciate your content Christian as I find it’s such a good balance between care and styling of the plants however when this epidemic is over you should definitely get some more white cover pots as the odd one or two you are missing really kill your aesthetic.

My mother would place egg shells also but, concerned about bugs increased. Do you rinse the egg shells off? I thought it was for the protein.

fruitofthespirit galatians522kiyee Lol. Yes, grandpa did the same too. You can wash them, some people bake them as well. I don’t do either for now, just grind them so finely and sprinkle them on your soil. 😊

Are you using disinfectant wipes on the leaves of the plants?
@CrazyPlantGuy
@CrazyPlantGuy 4 жыл бұрын
JTL Haha, no. Just a wet cloth or paper towel. Although disinfect wipes may not be bad if the leaves had say mealy bugs. Similar to using rubbing alcohol and qtips to kill them. 😆

How often do you aerate the soil of your plants?
@CrazyPlantGuy
@CrazyPlantGuy 4 жыл бұрын
Carol Fisch I usually do it at least once a month. Or if a plant I maybe have watered too much, I’ll gently loosened the soil to allow air so it can dry quicker and not risk root rot.
