FUTC ANALOG VIBES PRESETS use code "launch50" to get them for just $5 - futc.gumroad.com/l/analog_vib...
I fell in love with analog/film photography and spent an entire year taking photos almost exclusively on film. But the inconsistent results I was getting and the price increases by Kodak and Fujifilm made me look for alternatives. That is why I spent the past months finding out how I can replicate the Film Look with digital cameras like the Fujifilm X-T30, Fujifilm X-Pro 1, Fujifilm GFX 50R, Sony A7RII, Sony A7IV, Nikon D2X. I have used all of these cameras to create images that have a nostalgic analog quality to them and today I am sharing my whole process and research on how you can do it too. One way is to use Fujifilm Film Simulations like the Portra 400 recipe by FujiXWeekly and another is the use of Lightroom Presets which I will both cover in this video, and even show you how you can edit your images to achieve this look yourself.

I am blown away by the response to this video. I worked extremely hard on the presets, the shop, the fake film box I made in Blender (for no reason other than I wanted everything to be perfect) and, of course, making this video. I have an exam tomorrow and hustled like crazy the past week to finalize everything and also study for the exam, with 12h+ sitting at my desk every day. It makes me so incredibly happy that the effort seems to be paying off. Thank you everybody ❤ Also I just realized, after 3 days, that PayPal checkout hasn't been enabled the whole time since launch... Very unfortunate, but it was my stupid mistake 🤦‍♂ So, if you are seeing this and couldn't purchase the presets because you don't have a credit card, I am very sorry. But now, finally, PayPal checkout is enabled 😊

@FUTC Thank you so much for creating this tutorial! I've been trying to expand my horizons with the way I edit in LR and this video helped me gain a valuable understanding of the underlying properties of that groovy, nostalgic filmic look! Already tried applying these techniques to some raw shots and I am so stoked on how the edits look.

I made a few home made diffusion filters using silver and black spray paint on the inside of cheap uv filters. It's a little more work than hairspray, but it is more permanent. You can use acetone to clean the filter if you make a mistake. The silver filter is on my X100V all of the time.

I got a Glimmerglass filter recently and I think it was worth the money. The softness and incredibly beautiful blooms it adds to my video have to be seen to be believed - instantly makes my footage stand out in an ocean of same-same digital sensor videos. I think the trick with this type of filter is that "less is more" - a subtle effect is best.

Don't underestimate your work. I've found some good free film presets for Capture One (you may like it). But your recipe showed me how to do that by myself. While other presets use complex color grading with the curve tool, your way uses some tools I better understand. Every time I changed one of these curves, the whole thing ends in a complete mess. Now I can make some modifications by myself. That's great. Thank you very much. Hope your exam is going well. Ich drücke die Daumen.

After watching this I bought both your and Oliver Keys presets. Although Oliver Keys are great, I feel like yours are miles ahead. Oliver Keys take a bit more tuning with each image as just applying the preset left me with an almost unusable image every time with me needing to adjust far more than just exposure. Yours will most likely be my go to preset to use on my everyday photos. I threw an old canon 50mm on my A7iii and very light hairspray on a uv filter method and the photos I'm getting are the closest to real film I've personally achieved. Its really inspired me to get out and take more photos especially with the warm tones on the F400K preset, thanks for presets

As someone that also has a set of DIY diffusion filters, shoots Fuji, loves the Fuji 27mm, and used to shoot film almost 2 decades ago, you hit all the key points. Shadow, Mid, and Highlight color adjustments advice is spot on as well. Fuji also does better with highlights in my opinion and handles that over exposure for the film look nicely. Also, got a good chuckle out of the cheapest UV filter and hair spray bit because that is almost exactly what I've done with a bunch of filters. Though I've also tried fixative for working with chalk (glimmer glass vibes) and chalk board paint (pro mist vibes) with some success. And if you want a more film shooting experience and can swing the cost, an XPro2's OVF with the 27mm is just perfection. Just the right amount of room around the framelines to easily adjust your composition without things feeling tiny.
@futc.photography
@futc.photography Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I should definitely experiment with more DIY filters! As for the X-Pro 2, I reviewed the X-Pro 1 a couple of months ago and quite enjoyed it, but I was conflicted on the optical viewfinder as the offset made it hard in many situations to compose very accurately. But I would love to try another X-Pro camera in the future, especially in combination with the XF27mm

@@futc.photography The parallax at closer focusing distances takes a while to adjust to for sure - I just love rangefinder style cameras and the little boxes they look like. Going along with using vintages lenses for their less refined optics - cheap manual lenses from companies such as 7artisans, TTartisans, Pergear, etc. generally have the flaws that are associated with fast film lenses. Some favorites of mine are the TTartisan 17 1.4, Pergear 25 1.8, and 7artisan 35 1.2 Voigtlander as well but that's $$$

Really enjoyed the video! Lab scans of negatives are indeed really bad. Home scan’s are much better, but then I prefer them in medium format (something like 6x7 Mamiya 7ii oooohm), of course I wanted to develop my own rolls of film, before I knew it I was building a darkroom. The investment was huge, the rolls of film expensive the pain of all those chemicals… I loved it all, and I still miss it at times. At some point I realized I could go see a lot of places and just photograph for all that money. So now I do most of my work on a Leica Q2 Monochrom 😅 photography journeys can get interesting apparently. When processing my color images I still have porta 800 in my mind, though. Tiny nitpick; sensors in digital camera’s are analog devices. It’s the processing of the sensor information that makes a digital camera digital.

I've been experimenting with an analogue look for digital images for a couple of years now. Tried all the same things you've mentioned in your video aswell: lens filters, color editing, presets, vintage lenses. But I think there is a certain limit to lightroom / capture one / or whatever when it comes to emulating these looks. Furthermore it gets difficult if you want to have consistent results. Film behaves very differently. The amount of light can already change the outcome of a certain film stock. Personally, I think the closest you can get to film is the Dehancer Photo Plug-In for Lightroom or Capture One. It was mainly created for filmmakers who wanted to enhance their color grading game, but they decided to also create a stills only version. Honestly, that plug-in is just superior to everything out there at the moment. DxO is good, but can't compete with it. RNI is not even close. And all "filmic" presets are not worth mentioning (no shade btw). I think you should try Dehancer out or even make a video about it. You could compare real film stocks with the digital emulation from Dehancer, even though that has been done before. But still, it's crazy how accurate you can get your digital photos. Also you have access to halation- , bloom- , compression- , overexposing-behaviour- and grain-tools (these tools react dynamically with the input source). Would love to see or hear what you think about it, since you are an experienced film shooter and know how these things are hard to recreate in lightroom alone since these parameters are too static in LR.

Thank you for your input, I appreciate you taking the time 🙏 That sounds super interesting and I’ll definitely look into it! I tried to do my best in Lightroom but native support for halations, bloom, etc. sounds amazing

Thank you, never heard of that plug-in. Sounds like it might be the ultimate thing! I even pondered at one point if I could make a plug-in for highlight bloom and halation and especially grain. There are no plug-in that does grain like film does. Maybe this is it.

@@SamBorgman Glad I can help. I myself have been looking for ages and it's just very convenient now. And the results speak for themselves. Dehancer is pretty expensive though. Maybe you should try out the free trial version first and see how you like it. Dehancer themselves also have a very specific guide on how to get the best results - worth looking into when trying the trial version. Worth mentioning: even though it's a heavy price for the plug-in, it's not a subscription. So you only pay once and than you are good to go for the rest of your digital editing life 😅

@@p_syv8053 Oh thank god! I can’t deal with subscriptions. I moved to Capture One because of greedy Adobe. No one should be using subscription based software.

100% Dehancer is the best thing on the market to emulate film right now. It’s not even close, honestly. And you’re right again, LR and other software simply do not have the tools to reliably and consistently match film, because film has a non-linear color reproduction which is very different to the way that LR processes RAW data. I’m definitely not an expert, but my understanding is that film responds to color and light with different “outputs” than you’d get with digital. Everything you do in LR has an equal but opposite reaction. You can try to mitigate it a bit, but the product usually ends up being a quite over processed looking photo which has something “off” about it. Sure, you can push the skin tones to be more yellow and less red as you might see in Portra 400 on a Frontier, but you end up losing the detail and gradient in the tonality and they end up looking like a pallor alien. Or you can push the yellows in one direction, but that also influences the greens, which are already being processed to try to make them look like “film greens,” but when you get the yellows looking right in the skin tones or the light on the side of a wall, now the greens look too processed. Film doesn’t have this problem because it’s exposed “as is,” and any changes made on top of that are made on a non-linear reproduction, so the ratios of colors and the way they interact (or more specifically the way they DON’T) isn’t changed nearly as much. I think LUTs are the best thing we have right now to replicating film, but even then, we’re a long way off because frankly, the resources don’t really exist outside of cottage industries trying to pull off this very niche feat. But I agree with you on Dehancer.
