Icebreakers, warm ups, community building…call them what you wish, but they are essential when you meet your students. Teachers should continue these students activities throughout the entire year in order to build a comfortable, positive environment where students want to participate and work together.
My name is Alexa Borota and I teach High School English. I also taught Middle School ELA for about eight years. I enjoy reflecting on the craft of teaching while providing tips and suggestions along the way. We can all use a little encouragement and humor!
My Favorite 7 Icebreakers:
1. Index Card Tower
2. Building Bridges (Straws or toothpicks and gumdrop candy)
3. 2 Truths and a Lie
4. How many ways can you use a ________? (paperclip)
5. Colored Airplanes (interesting fact)
6. This or That?
7. Hot or Cold?

Love these ideas! Thank you! My favorite ice breaker activity is what I call The Curtain Drop. I divide students into two groups on each side of The Curtain. The Curtain is simply a bed sheet attached to the wall on one side and held by me on the other. One students from each team sits in a chair on their side of the curtain. When I drop the curtain, the first students to say the name of the student on the opposing team scores a point for their team. As the game progresses, students start exchanging sweatshirts of glasses to throw off the opposing team. Finally I, give each team disguises including fake mustaches, sunglasses etc.

I love the suggestions, just recently started a HS Spanish Teaching position in Philadelphia and I've been having issues to get students to engage and participate in the classroom, I believe these icebreakers will help. Thanks!

When it comes to high school students, I want you to know that they tend to be negative or apathetic. It’s not you. This is why I take a good amount of time (all semester) to incorporate short games, creative ways of participating, etc. I notice a lot of high school teachers become less creative/collaborative in the classroom because we are preparing them for the real world and because it’s harder to do at their age; I think this is a huge mistake. Collaborating and teamwork is a life skill. I have a vlog coming up that describes 3 ways I get my students to participate. One of them involves polling. Polls inspire discussion because they can see in real time that others in class agree with them. Good luck!

Brilliant! Backs to the board is my fave. Groups of 3, 4 or 5 sit in circles on chairs around the room. One chair per group cannot see the whiteboard. Each round T writes a word, or group of words, even a sentence if they get really good. The student in each group who cant see the board has to guess what is written on the board by the other students' descriptions. Once the student knows the answer, hand up, "i got it!" , T listens, if correct, round stops. Points awarded to first group and groups rotate so that another student is facing away from the whiteboard, T writes a new word to begin next round. If T hears incorrect answer (can be as precise as equired), all groups contine until one group gets it! Contine til the bell rings.

Yay, I’m glad it can be useful! I taught bilingual ELA for three years. Many of my ELL’s didn’t speak English so I know where you’re coming from with the language barrier.

@@teachingwithalexa Do you have any tips or tricks on how to teach students who don't really understand English? This will be my 8th year teaching but any suggestions are always welcomed.

My remembrance of school is you don't want to interact with everyone. The last thing i would want is to be forced to interact with the bully that has been victimizing me for the last year or two.
@teachingwithalexa
@teachingwithalexa 10 ай бұрын
Aw, I’m sorry to hear that. The big idea is to promote and create common ground and respect within the room. That would be hard to do without offering interaction. That’s one of the reasons we should offer a variety of ways to get to know each other and to offer games throughout the year, not just the first week. Most teachers I know do not force anything, unless it’s academic
