How I Glaze and Tidy up my Pots, Ready for Firing in the Kiln

Glazing is a huge part of making my pots. It's often a slightly long, monotonous task, and one where I need to be extraordinarily careful, as making sure the vessels are neat and tidy at this stage makes all the difference later on. I discuss how I glaze pots and sponge them clean, how I approach different shapes and how I generally keep things shipshape, my studio tidy and how to work without creating (much) mess.
If you'd like to watch a film of mine that really discusses my glazes in a lot more detail, together with my search for new ones, you may like this video: • Searching for New Pott...
And please do check out my Instagram: / floriangadsby (I post here everyday and announce things like exhibitions and shop updates).

I get nervous and hold my breath when you carry and move so many pots on the wooden boards. 😂 Looking forward to seeing the finished pots and to finding out what your secret project is. You've been mentioning it for some time now! 🤔

Thank you for this insight into glazing and the meticulous detail for finishing each piece to give the very best effect. I glaze my first thrown pots tomorrow....I'll try to remember at least some of the tips you've given. Very inspirational for me to try and be as tidy as possible!

You have absolutely exquisite standards that I hope to keep in my own pottery. I love watching your processes, it’s so relaxing! The carving is my favourite 🙈 Thankyou for all the hard work you do to make these videos ☺️

This video was lovely!! I’m a new pottery, just as a hobby, but glazing is far and away my favorite part of the process because it really brings everything together and can be so transformative. How do you decide which form gets which glaze? And what’s your approach to only using about 3 glazes overall, and always doing one solid application for each form? I’m fascinated by the beautiful minimalistic methodology with which you approach your work!

Great video. Am in a class where we don't dip, so brush application only. I use a 1 inch hake brush for most. Would so like to be able to dip & clean up as you do. Loved seeing all your steps in the order you approach them. What a large body of work! Best of luck with your sale. I am not even gonna try this time, as last time, against all strategies, i was shut out in seconds. Happy you are successful!

Loved this video! It might be too technical for this channel, but I'd love to see a video about reclaiming your glaze water someday - as in, how do you ensure you have the right ratio of glaze particles to water. Do you measure the specific gravity, weigh your glaze reclaim, something else? I'm so curious. Anyway, thanks for all your work - I'm definitely a better potter for your videos.

4:10 KZfaq closed captions thinks that the glazes are made from feldspar and "Nephilim cyanide". I thought that sounded wrong, so I searched online and found nepheline syenite which makes a lot more sense. 😂 Wanted to share that here just in case anyone else is watching with auto-generated captions on.

Can your glazes be brushed on? I thought brushing was less work than dipping. I only just thought about turning in a horizontal axis, like a standard lathe, to reduce runs by gravity. I also wonder if there is an alternative more viscous suspension solution that enable thicker or more controllable coatings. I hope to be buying Christmas gifts from you soon.

Hi Florian! Do you wash your bisque ware before glazing? Or find it doesn’t make much of a difference with the glaze?
@floriangadsby

I doesn’t seem to make much of a difference with this glaze, whilst it definitively did make a difference with a metallic matte black glaze I was using earlier this year.

Can you get a wax that like carbonizes? Something that forms a barrier in the clay surface without flowing and sticking like a glaze? I suppose any carbon would burn off and anything like ash would be like a glaze. Are there any exceptions?

Should you wear a mask when cleaning the glaze from the pots?
@sarahisabella1745
@sarahisabella1745 Жыл бұрын
At least it’s highly recommended to wear one. The dust is not good for the lungs and having the glaze so close to the face increases the risk of breathing it in. He mentioned that for longer periods of time he does wear one

You NEED to know this before you GLAZE DIP!
