Going to an Ivy league was 17 YEAR OLD MELODY'S BIGGEST DREAM - I was absolutely crushed when I was rejected by ALL 8 of them in high school. Watch me recount getting rejected by Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, UPenn, Dartmouth, Brown, Cornell. But it's okay to get rejected; there are many different pathways. This video was made to give more awareness of a program (3+2), most people probably haven’t heard of. This was also path that required endless endurance, many tears, but I wanted to show everyone that if I can do it, you can too! So here's my Ivy League story, and how I unexpectedly became a STEM major along the way. #ivyleague #columbiauniversity #engineering #collegereaction
Quick NOTE: This was my first ever vlog so I’m still trying to get the hang of this… and didn’t fully articulate all of my thoughts. Going to an Ivy League was my biggest dream in HIGH SCHOOL (17 year old melody didn’t know why) but now that I’ve graduated, my perspective has changed A LOT! For more details about it; watch my other videos!

An alternative way for admission to an Ivy League college signifies that the institution recognizes your value of resilience, perseverance, and personal growth. It acknowledges that your achievements and capabilities extend beyond a single set of circumstances or a particular moment in time.

In secondary school (what Americans call high school), my teachers scoffed at the idea that I would ever go to university, let alone attend a good one. But with a lot of hard work and a little luck I was eventually able to complete a DPhil (a PhD) at the University of Oxford. Never give up!

Great first video, Melody! I had never heard about this 3+2 option, sounds very useful to a lot of people. Thank you for sharing! Some suggestions: slow down a little bit :), also let the pop up images linger longer. Viewers may need a little more time to digest what you are saying and showing especially since it is packed with useful information! I can't wait to watch more videos from you! Q: Do you have to opt-in to 3+2 from the beginning of your freshman year or at what point do you need to know that is what you want to do?
@meloteay

Thanks so much Lee, for the useful feedback! Will definitely keep this into account for my future videos, I appreciate it a lot :) To answer your question, you do not need to opt-in to 3+2 from the beginning of your freshman year! (I actually haven't even heard about it until AFTER I committed to colleges). Although, it IS a good idea to have an idea if it's something you want to pursue early because there ARE a couple pre-reqs that need to be completed before you start at the engineering institution you plan to transfer to. They're generally physics and math courses, so if it's not something you're sure whether you want to do from the start of college, definitely take at least 1 or 2 physics courses, so you'll have at least completed some pre-reqs. I DID have a couple friends who didn't think they wanted to do 3+2 until their second year of college, so they didn't take any pre-reqs yet and had to cram a lot of them at once and do summer school. My general recommendation is at least taking a few so you can space out the courses a bit more, and be able to explore other classes you may be interested in too. Hope this answers your question, and feel free to ask more!

@meloteay thank you so much!!! I will definitely contact you in the future. I’m super duper excited to attend Scripps, but a bit worried since they don’t have my preferred (stem) major. I once heard from a student that they had to change their entire life plans because Scripps didn’t offer their major, which is why I’m interested in the Columbia SEAS program :) Also, did you find out about this early or later during your college years? Do you think it would be best for me to talk to my advisor about this now? I’m also concerned about the rigor of Columbia - was you adjustment smooth or were there rocky roads? Nonetheless, this information will definitely stay in my mind throughout the next 3 years. Thanks again, from a fellow scripsie!☺️💓

@TJ-qm2qx To answer your questions: Out of curiosity, what is your preferred STEM major? Some of my friends actually self-designed majors at Scripps, since the school didn't offer the major they were interested in. There's actually a section in this link (official Scripps website: catalog.scrippscollege.edu/content.php?catoid=18&navoid=1959) dedicated towards the petitioning process of doing so.You can "command f" / "ctrl f" Self-Designed Major, to look more into it, if that's a path you're interested in! But the Columbia SEAS program (and other 3+2 schools like USC, washington university in st louis, etc) is also another path to major in specific STEM majors that aren't offered in most liberal arts colleges! I actually found out about 3+2 AFTER I committed colleges but I was interested in it because it felt like a second chance to pursue STEM :) I think because of the amount of pre-reqs that are required, it's best to speak to an advisor ASAP so they can help plan your college courses and path! In terms of transitioning to Columbia, I thought it was challenging but I think it was both the factors of me growing up in CA and it being the first time so far away from home (and suburbs to city transition) and also Academic rigor. (More details here too haha: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jaunfJuUnNO6gaM.html) At liberal arts colleges, you have a mixture of humanities and STEM courses, whereas once you're at engineering school it's all STEM classes, which was definitely something I had to get used to. But I really loved how at Columbia, everyone in your major understands how challenging these courses are and we all band together to get through them together

@@meloteay thanks again for the reply! I am very interested in becoming a civil engineer. I actually didn’t know that Scripps had the self-designed major program, so I’ll definitely be looking into it. I’ll also be contacting my advisors, good enough, we just got assigned them. All of this information is sooo helpful! I am still worried about the academic/social scene - did you feel sad leaving your friends of 3 years and starting your life in a big city across the USA? And you also got to graduate at Scripps which is a big plus for me!!! I’m amazing at STEM, (terrible at humanities unfortunately) so I think I’ll be able to deal with the academic rigor. Hopefully I can get in! I read that if you have the following pre-requisites, other required stuff, and GPA, it’s basically auto-acceptance. Do you think that is true?
@meloteay
@meloteay 11 ай бұрын
@@TJ-qm2qx Ah okay! With self-designed majors, if you're interested in majoring in something with the words "engineer" in it, it might be harder to pass because there's the 3+2 program, but I'd still look into it just in case. ☺I definitely also recommend taking E4 at Harvey Mudd! It's an intro to engineering course, you learn a lot about the engineering design thinking process and I got to learn a lot about CAD and the machine shop too. And yes, of course I felt sad leaving my friends. And it was harder because my time at Scripps campus was actually cut short because of the pandemic. But I still regularly kept contact with them during remote learning and when I went to columbia! I often text and video chat them, and it was super heartwarming coming back for graduation! As a 3+2 student, you can write a petition to walk with your original graduating class, I was super happy to see all of my friends again. Starting life in the big city was an adjustment for me (especially as someone who grew up in the quiet suburbs, and southern California, so it was also a weather adjustment hahaha), but with 3+2 kids, they put you all in the same residential halls, so I found it really easy to find my community when I moved to Columbia. My Columbia best friends are actually the people I got assigned to live in the same suite with :) I also made a lot of friends in my major. And it's amazing to hear you're good at STEM! Once you go to engineering school, it's all STEM classes haha. And with your last question, I think you should ask the Claremont Colleges 3+2 advisor about it. I think it varies from year to year and number of applicants but do your best with the classes and apply!

@@WinningPath I really enjoyed this class called "CORE III Foreign Languages Teaching Clinic." It was one of the coolest and most fulfilling classes I've ever taken. Scripps partnered with a local elementary school, and I got the chance to teach Mandarin to elementary students every week! I learned so much from developing syllabuses for the class and teaching the students. I also loved many of the music classes I took at Scripps such as; "Music Cultures of the World" and "Music of the Spirits." These classes gave me the opportunity to immerse myself and learn more about the music traditions and histories around the world. ❤ The STEM classes mentioned in the videos were really great because of how supportive all my professors were. But I also wanted to share some non-STEM classes I took at Scripps. 🥰

Ivy League Universities in the USA have become trash in recent years. These moron colleges have officially abandoned the traditional method of recruiting students based on objective standardized testing (like the SAT). Instead, they are playing a game which they call Holistic Approach that puts excessive emphasis on factors like extracurricular activities, teacher recommendations, college application essays, racial quota, special preference given to children of alumni and first generation college students etc. Make no mistake. These things are completely irrelevant to a student's academic potential. The Supreme Court of the United States has already ruled the race-based admission policies of Harvard and UNC are unconstitutional. Let this be a wake-up call to all the colleges all across America.
