I originally found your channel, because of your HSK1-4 Anki set, but this video helped me a lot with motivation. I am currently in the middle of my Bachelors here in Germany and plan to do an exchange year in North America in one year. Obviously due to Covid and also my limited practical experience, I pushed researching all conditions to satisfy away, but now I’ll start! Thanks a lot!

Hi bianca! The video was amazing 🫶🏻 I'm a Master's student pursuing microbiology and want to pursue my PhD from an ivy league. Any suggestions please? I can't find any videos related to that. Most of the videos on the internet are by physics or astrophysics students

I really enjoyed this video. Not many videos like these can keep me engaged the whole time. After having listened to this, I’m wondering if there is any benefit in gaining practical work/field experience over research experience when you’re applying for a PhD. I recently looked into UPenn’s Neuroscience program, but I have no research experience just 12 years of working in healthcare. Thoughts?
@bianca.phdinprogress
@bianca.phdinprogress Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching!!! Realistically, if you're applying to neuroscience programs (and especially one's as prestigious as UPENN's), research experience is almost required at this point (unless you're doing computational neuroscience). I would also say it's a smart move to see if you actually do want to pursue a PhD, especially coming from a related yet distant field in content/work such as healthcare. Working in an academic lab for 1-2 years would not only increase your competitiveness in the applications, but also help you know if research is actually what you want to do for a major portion of your life!

How has your Chinese studying been while at Columbia? One of my best friends is also in the Neuroscience pHD program at Columbia and he has almost no time for anything else.

@bianca.phdinprogress Жыл бұрын
omg you have a friend in the NBB program?? thats wild! transitioning has been hard, so my Chinese studying has definitely gone down by a lot LOL. Also my video production LOL. But I've been getting back into it and finding a more efficient way to study to account for lack of time or mental capacity due to the phd. I'll be posting videos again though so I'll talk about that transition in a week or two!

Hi Bianca, nice to know from you. Do you feel it is important to have working experience before going for a PhD to get into a top university like Columbia or Harvard?
@bianca.phdinprogress
@bianca.phdinprogress 5 ай бұрын
honestly, at this point, its low key necessary to have working experience. Either you work a lot in undergrad, or you take a year or two (or more) off after undergrad to build up your experience and skillset. The most important thing, however, is to show graduate schools that you're able to conduct independent research that is compelling and transforms your field.

Ma'am I have Bsc(H) in neuroscience and presently doing masters in neuroscience. I have IELTS and 2 research papers. How can I get PhD in neuroscience in MIT or other top university.
@bianca.phdinprogress
@bianca.phdinprogress Жыл бұрын
There isn't a method that will guarantee acceptance into top universities since there is an aspect of luck and how well you match the schools desired student body (applicants can't know the specifics of what type of student/research interests is wanted and this actually changes year to year). But there are things you can do to increase your chances. 1) do academic research in a well respected lab. Especially in neuroscience, the field is so competitive that it's not enough to have good grades and papers. Doing a Masters program won't guarantee admission either. The thing that will differentiate you from your peers is doing cutting edge research in a great lab and seeking projects where you can be more independent (which will hopefully also bring about papers). The more you work in an academic lab, the greater your chance will be to impress admissions committees. 2) make sure the faculty at your desired schools are actually in your area of interest. Even if you have the best application, MIT or other top universities won't care if they can't place you with a professor. Ultimately, a PhD program means placing students with prospective professors. If your research doesn't match with any professors, it's unlikely that you'll get in. 3) make a cohesive story about yourself and research interests. PhD programs want passionate people who care about science. It's unlikely that they'll accept people who just want to go to their school because it's Harvard or MIT. Your focus shouldn't be on getting into an Ivy League neuroscience program, but becoming the best neuroscientist that you can and identifying what area of research is important to you. What areas of research are you interested in? Dive into that and become an expert in that field (as much as you can until you apply to programs). Apply to schools where that area of research is highly regarded. That may not be an Ivy League university, but you'll have a better shot at getting accepted to a school that has a strong department in that area of interest than an Ivy League that knows you only want to go there because it's prestigious.

I am currently applying for some neuroscience master programs across the world. I am struggling to find relatively cheap or free programs as a low-income student. I would be so grateful if anyone can check my letter of intent or suggest me some universities to help me increase my chance of acceptance in any possible way. Sincerely...

I haven't done a masters so I'm not familiar with programs unfortunately, but I hope you find the resources you're looking for online! There's tons of videos on KZfaq though that help with the application process and tell you more about what prospective schools are looking for in their writing prompts! not sure if there are any that are Neuro specific, but I'm sure something in the STEM field can help!
