Hey guys!
I talk about the classes I took, overall GPA, UC GPA vs. school GPA, specifics about my extracurriculars, and general essay responses to four questions. I remember binge watching these videos when it was my college applications season and I found them super informative. I hope you find this video helpful :))

We actually couldn't take weighted classes until sophomore year either! I only took one in school that year: AP Biology. On another note, colleges look at the context of your school and opportunities so they will compare you to people with similar situations so don't worry :)

Good evening! You did a great job with your academics and extracurriculars. It is very impressive that you did! For right now, I am working on my AA degree in general Ed at a 2-year college. I have been studying at a 2-year college for 7 years. After I complete with my AA degree in general Ed, I will be getting training for acting on television. Acting is really that I am passion in. Including journalism on television. After I do my training for acting, I will be earning my BA degree in journalism at a 4-year college. Back in high school, I was planning to be taking journalism as my elective course. However, I had to focus on my courses to learn about a job. I have taken coping skills, life skills, study skills, vocational skills, basic math, economics, personal finance, and business. I have chosen web design, word processing, Spanish, theatre, and chorus for myself. For the rest of elective courses, they have chosen for me. Back in high school, I had to switch schools from state to state for another year because my dad's military. He is technically my stepdad, but I always call him dad because he is the man who raised me as a military child. I was born in the city of Buffalo in New York. I was diagnosed with autism at age 3. I lived in my hometown back in my early childhood until age 5. Then, I had to PCS everywhere in the states for many years. I am working on my second book which is called my life throughout with autism and being a military child. Once I complete with my AA degree, I will be including that in my first book. It will be the same content but different chapters. Including my 2-year college graduation in my first book. I have been to 6 different elementary schools, 2 different middle schools, 4 different high schools, and 3 different community colleges. I really enjoyed watching your video because your video has been inspired to me. You did a great job with your video. I speak Spanish and English fluently. At a young age, I learned Spanish and English at the same time. However, I was not able to have a conversation in Spanish until age 16 back in 11th grade. I started to speak it fluently at age 18 back in college. I graduated from high school in the spring of 2016. I did not even take any APs nor honors courses due to my military move. I was mostly in mainstream courses with one-on-one assistant back in 10th, 11th, and 12th grade. I was in a first row earning my high school diploma because I was a top 10% of my graduation class. I was ranked 28 out of 335 students from high school. Back in my senior year of high school, I was going to major in computer specialist as my college degree. Due to my lower scores in reading and writing, I have switched from computer specialist as getting my college degree to management as getting my college diploma. When it was my first time attended to a 2-year college, I have taken development courses for reading and writing. Then, I took my first college math course that relates to my management major. When I moved from state to state for another 2 years, I have switched from management as getting my college diploma to general Ed as getting my AA degree because I have decided to work on my AA degree at a 2-year college. I had to take development courses for English all over again. Including for math. Later on, I have taken college courses for English and math for my general education major requirements. I have been working on my AA degree for 6 years, but the total is 7 years that I studied at a 2-year college. As I said before, I will be receiving my training in acting after I have finish with my AA degree in general Ed. Then, I will be earning my BA degree in journalism for 3 years at a 4-year college. My dream career is to be an actor and journalist from television at a young age. Back in high school, I was good with math and science. When I went to college, I have started to do good with reading and history. That is why many actors and journalists have to do good with writing, reading, and history. I am good with reading and history, but I need to comprehend very well on my lectures because sometimes I have trouble with it. I have taken journalism course in this past spring semester. For right now, I am taking mass media. I am almost finish with that course in this semester. That is why I have to work on it. I am trying good to be comprehending the lectures everyday. That is why I am learning something new everyday. Back in 10th grade, I have worked on my geometry workbook at home. That was why I took advanced algebra in 12th grade. In 11th grade, I was in a math course at a small group. However, I was with general education students most likely. I graduated from high school with a regular education diploma. Will be earning my AA degree next semester in May. My name is Andres by the way. It is pleasure to meet you, Anshika! Again, you did a great job with your academics and your extracurriculars. It is very impressive that you did. My bio parents are from Puerto Rico, and my stepdad is from Colombia. I have a younger brother in my mom's side. Also, I have four younger sisters and one baby brother in my bio dad's side. I grew up with my family who are from Colombia and Puerto Rico. I have a nephew in my first younger sister's side. If you want to know which states I lived in before, my first book will be ready to publish on Amazon. Good luck with college wherever you attend. God bless you and your family. 🙏❤️

Thank you for the informative video! I've been binging UC acceptance videos because I'm planning on applying and this was very helpful :) Currently I'm a junior in high school and I've been trying to do as much community service and extracurriculars as possible. I've heard it's actually more important for colleges to see a few extracurriculars in one topic than having many extracurriculars without a focus. Would you recommend only sending in extracurriculars related to my major or everything that I've participated in? For context, I am part of 6 clubs (french, HOSA, french NHS, medical, amnesty, and key club), a medical program at a university, have shadowed at a clinic for a week, and have run a fundraiser for a non-profit at my school.

@anshikaoj Жыл бұрын
Hi Alexa! I'm glad you found this helpful :) I would suggest writing your extracurriculars in terms of ranking how involved you were, most impressive, related to your major, etc. though I would definitely add the other extracurriculars if you have space; it shows that you explored, were involved with your community, and it brings out the "well-rounded" aspect of the applicant. @@romitmakar6504 I live in California and I got an academic scholarship for Berkeley so I don't pay much for tuition :) I also like the larger public school environment more than smaller private schools, and the location is much better for my situation. I also think private schools are really expensive and I didn't want to pay that much for my undergraduate experience especially because my major is much better at UC Berkeley either way. It's definitely all situational based and I thought a UC school would give me everything I need and more :) Hope that helps!

Thanks for the informative video! I’m a junior applying later this year. What major did you put on the UC app and do you think it was necessary for a ton of your extracurriculars and essays to relate to them? Don’t know if I should draft multiple PIQs related to a particular major
@anshikaoj
@anshikaoj 5 ай бұрын
Recently UC Berkeley changed their policy to where students are directly admitted into their major, however, for the year I applied, all majors under The College of Letters & Sciences are undeclared. I still had to declare my major and I ended up applying into Haas School of Business and taking the prerequisite to meet the GPA requirement for the Computer Science major (double majoring). I think your PIQs can relate to your major though you should also show other aspects of yourself. For example, one prompt asks about your creative side and here you can talk about something unrelated to your major. Hii. If I am from a country or a school that does not bring up so many opportunities for high schoolers then what should we do.
@anshikaoj
@anshikaoj Жыл бұрын
Hi Riya! Most schools compare you according to your circumstances and surroundings so if they see that other students going to the same school as you, or neighboring schools, also face a lack of opportunity, they will take that into consideration. However, my advice would be to get involved in your local community through volunteering, getting a job, participating in events, winning awards, etc. Even trying to do something remote in another city/state can help.

I definitely agree that the college system does make high schoolers (especially in competitive areas) stretch their capacity. I was able to balance it due to time management skills, but also my internship was part-time and my classes were online. This allowed flexibility in my schedule. What really helped me was going through all of these ventures with my peers. I had a great support system and we worked through our classes together!

I technically came in with Junior Standing though you still have to complete certain classes that are only at UC Berkeley to declare your major and graduate. So the way to get into University is to be so accomplished already that you don't need it. Of course a 4.0 GPA, epic admission essays, and 100 extracurriculars will get you in. But the real question is, how much of that is necessary? If my gpa is decent but not max, like 3.5, is that enough? And what if I don't do much extracurricular stuff? How few things can I get away with doing, and still get into a university?
@anshikaoj
@anshikaoj 10 ай бұрын
You'll definitely get into a university, however, the reason why students do as much as possible is because they want to impress top universities! I will say that it is possible to get into top universities without all the extravagant stats, extracurriculars, essays, however, it is rare.

Hey Jack! I would do dual enrollment english because it's transferable to UC schools and you get to bypass some english courses which you may not be able to do with AP Language. Additionally, as long as you passed the dual enrollment class, you'll receive credit, however, for AP Language, it depends on your AP Score, and it I believe it needs to be a 4 or 5 to get credit at UC Berkeley. Totally understand where you're coming from! Make sure you're expanding on a few of the key extracurriculars you did in your essays (350 words). The rest of them you only get 350 characters, so make sure to use this space wisely :) Getting started might be the hardest part of your essay journey though what really helped me was sitting down and freely writing (not worrying about grammar, punctuation, word count, high-level vocabulary etc.) and mostly focusing on story-telling and what you want to share. I used to be so caught up in how I want to write my essay that I wasn't focusing enough on what I wanted to share. I would emphasize writing all your thoughts down first and then making it a cohesive essay. I might make a seperate video for reading out all my essays 👀
