Ah we applied to the same 3 vet schools (didn’t apply to Cambridge) that’s so cool because I don’t know many who applied to both Glasgow and Edinburgh 😊 Why exactly did you apply to those compared to Surrey or Nottingham etc? I feel the same way about your motivation to do vet med, imagining your ideal life or work environment and then figuring out how you would achieve that really worked for me too 😊

Hello. I am from Bangladesh . I'm currently doing graduation at Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry. It's a combined course(takes 5 years to graduate) . I love veterinary as much as you do. So I want to study abroad for my post graduation. It would be better if I could get scholarship as I am a member of a middle class family. Please help me by giving some suggestions about what I should do.

Thank you so much I really want to be vet and I m desperate to go to Girton. Im 12 so I am too young to do work experience and I can’t do that any way because of covid. Please could you recommend some textbooks for me I am struggling to find so with the right amount of difficulty because the books for children are too childish and don’t contain enough information and the adult ones are a little bit tricky and aren’t that enjoyable to read. Love ur videos

Aww that’s really great to hear! A vetty friend of mine recommended ‘An introduction to veterinary anatomy & physiology textbook’ by Victoria aspinall and Melanie cappello, for other non-textbook books there are: ‘secret life of a vet by Rory cowlam’, ‘all my patients have tales by Jeff Wells’ and many more! I’ll probably make a video sharing some interesting ones and provide the full list I got from other people in the vet community ☺️ all the best to you!

Thanks for this video! It's always interesting to see entry pathways into other vet schools. And it really never is easy anywhere huh 😂 I'm currently trying to get into Murdoch University's vet school (in Perth, Western Australia) and I'm doing pre-vet and I thought I'd like to share a bit about what that's like because it's a little different everywhere. It's very competitive (as it is everywhere else) and a bit complicated. I'd just like to share what I've learnt (sorry it's a very long rant). You can actually get in directly through WACE ATAR, which is an exam you complete in your final years of highschool. The entry requirement is an ATAR of 98 minimum. ATAR rank is essentially a ranking, and 98 means top 2 percentile in the state. I just barely missed this, so I'm really annoyed, but it's okay. Through this pathway, there's no interviews, nothing. You just get straight in. The second pathway is through a double major in animal health and animal science at Murdoch. THe first year of a double major in animal health and science is the exact same as first-year vet, so if you get in, you transfer straight to 2nd year vet. This pathway is also very competitive. FIrst off, it's the only vet school in all Western Australia. The entry requirements are distinction average grades minimum, with evidence of work experience (in a vet-oriented CV), references and a 500-word personal statement. There are no specifics on hours required for work experience, just get as much as you can. Have a free week? FIll it with a work placement. Murdoch tends to prefer applicants who have experience with the full range of animals, from cats, dogs, to horses, cows, pigs, sheep and wildlife. They particularly favour people with a lot of large animal work experience. I know this because I've spoken with a lot of successful vet transfers and they also mention it in one of their vet entry seminars. If anyone wants numbers, last year there were 300+ transfer applicants from animal science and health ALONE (ie. not including transfer applicants from other majors, direct transfer applicants, international applicants, domestic applicants from other unis and work experience transfers), and roughly SIXTY places available. ~30 are reserved for international students. ~20 for 2nd, 3rd-year animal science/health transfer applicants and ~10 for 1st-year animal science/health transfer applicants. Priority is given to the 2nd and 3rd years because they're been at university longer. Last year, only 10 students from first-year animal science/health managed to transfer. TEN. Yeah, the competition is no joke and I do not have high expectations for myself at all. Additionally, Western Australia has not been hit by COVID very hard. This year, we've only had two lockdowns, lasting only a couple days each. Otherwise, life pretty much goes on as normal so COVID is *not* an excuse for not getting work experience. Right now, I've got work experience placements at 2 small animal clinics, an equine clinic, 2 farm placements and 1 horse riding stable. I'm arranging another placement at an equine clinic right now. I also volunteer at a wildlife hospital as a hospital volunteer every Sunday, and I train cows for the Perth royal show every Friday. I'm part of all the animal interest groups at Murdoch, which has given me the opportunity to do practicals (eg. last Saturday I went sheep marking and drenching). A friend of mine has 9 placements (insanity). It's also not too easy to get work placements here. Most clinics only take in vet or nursing students, not animal science and health students. You have to email and call LOTS, and I mean LOTS of clinics and most will not answer, not offer places to animal science students or is fully booked out with placements. A lot of clinics have a work experience student in the clinic every single day, so getting a spot is hard and you have to contact clinics fast before spots get snatched up. You may also need to attend interviews for placements (I actually did one just yesterday, and thank god I got the placement!). One person I know had to travel down south on a gap year just to get placements. I know it sounds competitive and difficult as hell, but it is fun. Each week I get to work with horses, cows, dogs, cats, marsupials, reptiles and birds. It's absolutely great. I'm super busy all the time, but I never would have thought I'd be able to work with so many animals each and every week. I'm so grateful for the opportunity I've been given to be working so many animals each week. My personal experience from talking with transfers and doing work experience myself is: you're there to work. Yes, you need references, but when you're there you're representing the company/clinic/farm. Treat it seriously and do your best. Ask lots of questions to the vets. WHen you're writing your CV for transfer (different from a normal CV), you write down what you did, and what you took away from the experience. What impacted you, etc. Most of all, enjoy yourself! You're doing things most people would never get to do, and work with animals some people may have never seen in their life. At the wildlife hospital, I've worked with quendas, bobtails, skinks, kangaroos, turtles, birds of all sizes (pelicans, swans, herons, doves, pigeons, crows, magpies, parrots, galahs, kookaburrahs... you name it, we've had it there). We've also got resident emus, dingoes, tawny frogmouths (a kind of owl), kookaburrahs, bobtails and skinks and a grumpy but very cute wombat. The experience is so unique, and I really value my time working with all these animals. It's such an upgrade from highschool because of the freedom. Sorry this was such a long rant! Oh - thought I should quickly add this. Murdoch vet course is 5 years, BSC + DVM degree. We have a working on-site farm with cattle, horses, sheep, pigs, etc and an emergency vet hospital for large animals, domestic and exotics. The cattle training I do is actually on campus. I know there is also a piglet check-up practical you can do if you're part of the porcine interest group at the piggery there.

Oh wow Rhian thanks so much for the extensive detail on applying to Murdoch! It sounds super competitive but you sound like you're right on track in terms of securing placements and having the right attitude to take on a challenging course! I am in awe by your passion and determination to get into vet school and am wishing you all the best !! It really is a privilege to be able to work with so many different animals (Australian wildlife just sounds so cool!), do rmb to take care of yourself and don't work too hard alright

Hey there :)! I’m speaking from personal experience, during vet school I didn’t feel discriminated at all and my lecturers, course mates were all super cool and friendly and didn’t treat me differently! However when I was on farm placements sometimes in less diverse areas, I get interesting questions where people ask me where I’m from, or statements which made me feel a bit awkward about, however most people are curious and none are malicious (that I have met!), so I’ve been really lucky thus far! If you’d like more information the BVEDS website and fb commujity are really lovely and have tools and offer support in case you are discriminated against 🙏
