Hi everyone! I made this video to show you how I groom my Chow Chow at home. I thought I'd share with you a few grooming and brushing techniques and tips I've learned from owning 3 Chow Chows the past 13 years and to also show you how well behaved and sweet Chows can be, with proper training and lots of TLC!
Grooming your dogs is a great way to spend quality time and bond with them. Stay home, stay healthy, stay safe and stay happy and please hug your dogs for me!

I love how they are kind of cat-like in their personality and mannerism. But still want to be around you. And never knew how cat-like they are with the paw and face touching. And when raised correctly can be great at training. You did an amazing job at raising your chow-fur babies and making grooming a positive experience for them . 🥰 Thank you for your tips and ideas.

I have a purebred Cinnamon Chow Chow currently. Her name is Koda Bear, and she is 6 years old now. She is the third Chow I have owned. Please know, that Chows are very possessive of their owners. I learned with the first Chow, that you must immediately get them used to people. As puppies, they do not like having their face and feet touched, so do it CONSTANTLY. When feeding my Chow puppy, I would pet their face, while they are eating, so that they get used to you. They need to know that you are the master, and you are allowed to put your hand into their food bowl and touch them. As they get older, keep petting their face and feet, so that they accept your presence in doing so. Also, train them on a leash from an early age, to accept approaching people. Introduce your Chow Chow to as many people as possible, as they are anxious round strangers. To this day, my Chow will allow people to approach and pet her. But if anyone approaches with a dog, she goes crazy, trying to protect me from “the dog”. They are lovable, huggable and protective. I have had many dogs in my 69 years....but Chow Chows are the BEST companion, in my eyes!

I have a 7mo old chow, I do some grooming when she lying down and she tollerates this. I've also got her used to getting paws touched but can't get her to lie on her side to groom if awake and she will just get up and if you hold onto her starts panting so I just let her go. So not all of her gets brushed daily. Some folk have said it ok as don't need to brush puppy so intensely, alot to do with getting used to being groomed. I also have bought a deshedding tool with claw like prongs at the end. However I've seen that some of these cut the fur of shave it (think the furminator is one of these). She loves the beach (& the water surprisingly). Going to dog training classes after lockdown so hopefully they will have suggestions but even chicken as a high value treat doesn't convince her to stay for a brush!!
@pattymostlikely
@pattymostlikely 3 жыл бұрын
Ainslie Samuel Hi Ainslie! It’s really great that you know how to read cues your Chow gives you (at 7 months they can get really anxious and they enter different kinds of fear phases at different stages in their lives). At least she lets you brush her quite a bit and you got the paw touching down pat (which is very important early on), that means she trusts you.😊 Gentle brushing as often as you can is good, to make sure she doesn’t get matted fur (especially behind the ears, at the rump and behind the legs) and for most Chow puppies, it’s best to do this when they’re totally relaxed, at ease or even asleep! 😅 I have yet to get a claw type brush or a Furminator but so far what I use works on my Chow (a slicker brush and a finishing comb). Grooming/brushing is one way to bond with our doggies so if you do it often enough (and you keep making it a good experience for her by giving her treats as you do), she’ll eventually get used to it and look forward to it. You can also try brushing her tummy part while she’s standing as part of your daily training. But yes, I believe in puppy training classes because of the value you get especially from socializing your chow (with other dogs and other people) in a controlled environment.That way, you also build your Chow’s confidence so she’s less anxious.😊 The lockdown can be very limiting but I can tell that you really care about your Chow (what’s her name by the way?😊) and you’re doing the best you can for her, given the situation. And did you say she loves the beach and the water? Wow! That’s amazing! ❤️🐾 My Chow runs away the minute you say “bath”!😂 I really appreciate you reaching out and hopefully the video helped you even just a bit. Stay safe and healthy Ainslie and please hug your Chow for me! 😊❤️🐾

I had to grin when you said your dog sheds once a year-all year long! My dog Sugar is 1/2 border collie and 1/4 chow chow; it’s summer, and so she’s overheating and uncomfortable. Time to look for tips from other dog owners and groomers! I’m amazed your dog enjoys being brushed, oh I and should say I am loving the fact that you do the grooming yourself. I use a variety of combs and brushes-most frequently an undercoat rake. I do have a Furminator. In its favor, I have to say nothing else works as quickly and thoroughly, and over time, I have used it on three dogs and five cats. However, I don’t use it any more, because ALL of my animals hate it-even the ones who love being groomed. Some pet supply stores are excellent about accepting returns, in case you do go ahead and try it.
@pattymostlikely
@pattymostlikely 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! I have never seen or met a collie-chow before! I’m sure your Sugar is just so adorably smart! Summers have been relentlessly getting worse every year and I feel you! I do everything to make sure my dogs don’t overheat (they all stay inside with us but even then, we turn on the AC for most of the day just to be sure/safe). They also like ice cubes in their water bowl and I got them a couple of cooling mats. They get baths more often in the Summer too! I try my best to learn how to maintain their fur, nails, paws, ears, teeth etc. by myself because my dogs get anxious at the groomer’s (and at the vet’s). Your comment made me smile so big today! Thank you! 😊 And you just gave me a better perspective on the Furminator!😅😁 I’ve always been curious at how it will fare against my tried and tested brushes/combs (I currently use a slicker brush, a finishing comb and a Fur Fetcher). I hope you found our video helpful! Again, thank you so much and hugs to Sugar!

A good friend’s parents of mine have two Chows and I usually get to see them once a year. I have learned afterward that the breed has a reputation of being potentially aggressive. But I have never had any issues, which to me illustrates that with love, patience, consistency and good training there is no reason why Chows can’t be adorable. And my friend’s are. They are sooooo fluffy. Haha. I have always had cats so I kinda vibed with them because although they did enjoy people and seeing them, and getting petted, they really enjoyed their alone time and sometimes would not really care for us even if we were around. And that sort of independence is very cat like and was endearing to me. Anyway I remember they tried to brush them daily, even a little bit, as it saves a lot of trouble in the long run and the always looked put together and well groomed. Although one of them is a sloppy drinker lol (wet neck lol) Your dogs are really cute. They are so fluffy ! I love fluffy dogs so much arrrrggh. Rant over. Love from France.
@pattymostlikely
@pattymostlikely 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Corentin! 😊 Yes, Chows are mostly preceded by a not so pleasant reputation of being aggressive but like you said, with a lot of love and patience, they can turn into their full potential of being loving and adorably loyal. Their independence (yes, much like cats) make them even more endearing because they’re rarely needy. 😊 Thank you! I really appreciate this! I love hearing/reading/sharing stories about how others love their dogs and their experiences especially with Chow Chows (and Caucasian Shepherds). Daily grooming/brushing is a good way to bond with our fluffy dogs and really helps in maintaining their coats and keeping them clean. I love brushing my dogs! 😀 Thank you for checking out our video! I’m not quite sure where you are from or if we’re from the same country, so I wouldn’t be able to advise you on an appropriate responsible chow chow breeder:-( However, if you have a local chow chow owner’s organization/group in your area, they might be able to guide or direct you to the right people. Hello. How can we keep chowchow’s neck dry. My chowchow’s neck is always wet every time he drinks. Is there any advise you can give me? Thank you
@pattymostlikely
@pattymostlikely 3 жыл бұрын
Edrian Balanial Hi! There really are Chows that drool (and can be sloppy water drinkers too) more than others and bibs and bandanas work really well to catch drool and protect their necks from getting wet (at least to lessen it). You’ll have to have a lot of bibs and/or bandanas so you can easily change them once they get soiled. But as for us, we really just make sure we wipe the chin and neck after eating and drinking (I have towels around the house designated for his neck and body and one just for his paws) and we make sure there’s no dirt or moisture trapped by brushing, brushing and more brushing!😅 My chow loves ice cubes and bringing them to his bed so, I pretty much clean after him everywhere he goes 😅! (We also have paper towels within reach to clean up spills etc.) You can also try to have your Chow Chow’s neck fur trimmed (not shaved) a bit to avoid/control dipping into his water bowl. 😊 I know it can be really challenging to keep them well groomed and it takes a lot of focused commitment to keep them clean (and dry!). But we try everything we can to make them comfortable, happy and healthy! I hope that helps! Hugs to your Chow Chow and thank you for watching! I will also try to make a video about this soon! 🐾

@pattymostlikely
@pattymostlikely 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Darian! Finding a legit, responsible breeder for any breed is really important, it may be a bit challenging because reputable breeders screen their clients carefully to ensure that their puppy goes to a loving, responsible home. There are official Chow Chow (and other breeds) groups online. The Chow Chow Club Inc.: chowclub.org/ccci/ is a member of and is recognized by the American Kennel Club. They might be able to help and guide you in finding a reputable breeder. I know of others who find good breeders from other countries but I really feel bad whenever a young puppy needs to be transported via air cargo :-( There’s also a Chow Chow Rescue group that saves abandoned chows and rehabilitates them to be ready for good homes: Chow Chow Rescue Society (Facebook) @chowchowrescue (Instagram) They might also have a Chow match for you if you’re willing to go along that path of saving a rescued Chow. I admire your commitment to looking for a good breeder. I know it can get kind of confusing when you search online but it really helps to be able to visit a good breeder’s kennel where you can see the living conditions of the dogs and you can spend a bit of time to observe the Dam and Sire and the puppy of your choice. A good breeder will not have too many litters all at the same time and the puppies are checked for health issues regularly and vaccinated upon release. A good breeder will ask a lot of questions and will follow up on and ask for updates about your puppy even years after you’ve taken him home. I hope this helps even a bit. I figure we’re from different regions so I can only help as much, as far as finding good breeders is concerned. I wish you well and hope that you eventually find the right puppy for you, to raise, train and love!😊🐾

What kind of shampoo and conditioner do you use for your fur babies ?
@pattymostlikely
@pattymostlikely 3 жыл бұрын
Sincerely_jessie Hi! Since they were puppies I’ve only used organic Natural Neem Extract shampoo with Aloe Vera on them because it was safest and gentlest to use. It controls ticks and fleas and it’s also a moisturizer and deodorizer. It’s by a small, local, family owned company: www.fetchnaturals.com/ -their shampoo, rinse and conditioners are both safe and gentle to use on your doggies (and even on yourself!😊). I’m sure there are similar products that use natural ingredients that aren’t harsh on your doggies, you and the environment too. My dogs have just gotten used to this kind of shampoo. It’s best to find what works for and what’s specific to your doggie’s needs. (For itchies and rashes due to allergies like that of my senior chow, a medicated shampoo was always on stand by at home. I make sure it has Chlorhexidine and miconazole in it.) But whatever shampoo and conditioner you choose to use for your fur babies, it’s good to make sure it doesn’t have toxic ingredients like parabens, sulfates, alcohol etc. 🐾 I hope this helps! Thank you for watching our video! Keep safe!😊

@pattymostlikely
@pattymostlikely 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thank you! Melo, like most chow pups, is full of energy and it took quite awhile to train him to get used to being groomed. I started getting him used to touch and hugs the minute we got him at 8 weeks old. I just never force him to do whatever he’s uncomfortable with and I introduce things like brushes, blow dryers, nail clippers, etc. gradually, reinforcing him with treats when he doesn’t react negatively to them. Dogs have different charming personalities so it’s best to find out what they like and don’t like. Melo sniffs my hand and whatever I have in it whenever I introduce something new to him, I just let him sniff so he can get accustomed to it. One trick I found was to wait for them to be a tad sleepy, say when they’re tired after play or a walk. They usually would let you groom or massage them to sleep. It’s worth a try, hee hee. Thank you for checking out our little video! Hugs to you and your Chow (what’s his name, by the way?). Stay safe and healthy, always!

Hi! First, congratulations on your new chow! I know it can be both exciting and overwhelming having a new puppy at home. The little one is probably still trying to get used to his new environment and daily experiences. You can try introducing the brush one tiny step at a time, like showing it to him at first, then leaving it beside him for a few seconds. Giving him a treat and praising him if he doesn’t react negatively helps reinforce good behavior. Once he gets the idea that the brush won’t hurt him, try brushing him gently one stroke at a time, giving him a treat and a praise every time he lets you. He will soon get used to it and realize it won’t hurt him as long as you make the experience fun and safe for him. It will take a lot of patience though, so I’m rooting for you! Your love and patience will go a long way in helping your new chow grow confident and happy! I hope that helps! Stay safe and hugs to your new chow puppy!

Levi Page Hi! Yes, my Chow (Melo) gets along with my Ovcharka (Dean) very well. They grew up together (Melo is 4 months older than Dean). We made sure they were trained and socialized as puppies (we still reinforce training daily, they like routines). 😊🐾 My senior Chow, Lily (she’s 12), on the other hand, likes to keep to herself because she has hip dysplacia, (she already told them off when they joined our family 😅) so the boys respect her space and try not to bother her.

@pattymostlikely
@pattymostlikely 3 жыл бұрын
naomi andrade Hi! Thank you for reaching out! I know how it feels to have an anxious pup. My second Chow Lily had anxiety issues and was never confident around other people. 4 years old may seem a bit late to train for some but I do believe Chows can be trained at any age, though it may be harder and may take more time but it can be done. Socialization is a big part of puppy training to ensure that your Chow grows up confident in any situation/environment. Since your chow is already 4, you need to carefully/gradually introduce him to new sounds, dogs, people and places just for a few minutes at a time initially, reinforcing his good behavior with treats or praise (whichever works or your doggie) like when he doesn’t bark or try to run away, and reassuring him while being at his side calmly. My younger dogs, Melo (chow) and Dean (Caucasian Shepherd), both protective breeds were trained and socialized as puppies and even then, there are situations, people, sounds and things that make them anxious. They (and I’m sure most dogs) hate loud noises, (I know I do 😬) they bark and sometimes cower. I usually give them time to get used to it and even show them and let them inspect the source of the noise, say a pot that fell in the kitchen, and when they do not react in fear, I praise them (they love being called good boys!). A treat to reinforce good behavior also helps! Just try to not force him to endure a source of anxiety and give him a chance and place to retreat to, so he can calm himself down. (Be on the look out for anxiety or self calming cues like lip licking, yawning and looking away.) But if you find that he is not responding to your efforts (they usually need a lot of time to adjust), it never hurts to consult a reputable dog behaviorist/trainer in your area (who will evaluate your dog’s anxiety level) just to get a headstart and an idea on how to address your Chow’s anxiety issues Some even do one on one training sessions with you and your dog in your home. But I believe, with a lot of love and patience, you can help your Chow become confident in any environment. Dogs like structure so you’ll have to be consistent in training and socialization making them part of your daily bonding with him!😊 I wish you and you Chow all the best and I’m rooting for you! I’ll also upload a video about this soon! Thank you and don’t lose heart! Hugs to you and your Chow! Stay safe! ❤️🐾😊

@pattymostlikely
@pattymostlikely 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! I’m so happy my dogs and I were able to help you in any way. 😊 Some dogs are ok with fruits and veggies like a few blueberries or peeled (de-seeded) cucumbers, pumpkin/squash or a few slices of bananas occasionally, they are good prebiotics that can help feed the good bacteria in your pet’s gut. However, please AVOID toxic ones like grapes, onions, garlic, macadamia nuts and chocolates. Plain chicken or beef bone broth made especially for dogs (home made, no salt, no seasoning etc. I have yet to learn how to cook it from scratch so I buy for the meantime) would be okay as an occasional treat or to help hydrate them when they’re not feeling well. You can check out www.brothed.ph they make special bone broths for dogs and cats! 😊 Regarding the smell, it really helps to keep them indoors (Chows are actually known for being one of the cleanest dog breeds and thrive better indoors.) Especially young puppies, they need to be protected from microorganisms or bacteria that may be lurking in the mud or in grassy areas (where fleas and ticks hang out). Puppies are still building their immune system and they can be very vulnerable to germs and viruses (like Parvo or distemper) so it’s really best to keep them safe indoors where you can also regulate the temperature. Daily grooming/brushing will also help remove tangled fur and dirt. Less dirt, less smell. Since your puppy is young, you can’t give him frequent baths just yet. You can try wiping him down with a clean towel every time he gets his fur wet from drooling or after playing with water. Hopefully this helps! Stay safe and please hug your Chow pup for me! 😊🐾

@@INotStorm oh no, so sorry your chow is not feeling well. I know it’s hard to book vet appointments lately because of the pandemic but it would be ideal to bring him to the vet to be checked and assessed. Per my experience, a dog or a cat trying to eat leaves or grass (coupled with lose stools or vomiting) is a sign of digestive upset. 😢 I hope he gets to see the vet soon for proper diagnosis and treatment. Adding boiled, mashed pumpkin/squash at least a teaspoon to his food (plain boiled chicken breast) might help for the meantime, but the vet will have to determine the cause of his tummy problems. Praying for your pup! As for your chow and your pug not getting along, introducing the newer puppy gradually and not immediately letting them socialize with each other is recommended. They both need time to adjust to the new situation. Proper obedience training for both pups is always a necessity and will make life easier not just for the pups but for you too! 😊 Being their guardian, they will always look to you for guidance and structure. I hope this helps! 🙏🏻

Hi! Chow chow puppies are naturally playful and play biting is their way of discovering things. Puppies need a lot of patience and positive reinforcement training. You can try brushing her a little and giving her a treat and praising her (telling her that she’s a good girl) every time she stays still and every time she doesn’t bite and let’s you brush her even just a bit. It takes a bit of time and a lot of love and patience, but Chows are very smart and I’m sure your Chow chow will eventually get it and calm down as she grows up, as long as you keep training her and praising her. Thank you for watching our video and I hope this helps even a bit.😊🐾

Hi! Thank you for checking out our video! 😊 How old would your doggie be? If he’s a puppy, you might need to train him to get used to being touched. A puppy would play bite because that’s how puppies try to explore everything around them. So, best to address his puppy biting stage with a lot of patience, conditioning and training.😊 I’d use the same approach with a grown up doggie but with even more patience and time (I really believe in force free/reward based/positive reinforcement training). Try and wait for him to calm down too. When it’s almost time for bed and he’s a bit tired from his daily walks and play (a tired dog is a happy dog as they would say 😉), it might be a good opportunity to introduce a bit of grooming, a few brush strokes here and there just to help him get used to it and you can build it up from there. 🙏🏻 You can also try to get him used to the brush by showing it to him and letting him smell it, if he doesn’t bite, reward him with praise and a treat, then repeat as necessary until he gets the idea that when he doesn’t bite, you are pleased and he gets a reward.😊 I hope that helps and I really do hope you get to groom your doggie with ease, soon. Grooming time can be a good form of bonding between you and your doggie.♥️ (If you think it’s more of a behavior issue though, it might help to consult a dog behavior specialist just so you are guided on what to expect while training your doggie not to bite.) Stay safe and healthy and all the best to you and your pup!

@@pattymostlikely Thank you for this! Any suggestions on potty training on an almost 2 month old chow chow? We have a potty pad however she still pees anywhere. But it is her first night haha
@pattymostlikely
@pattymostlikely 3 жыл бұрын
@@wearcielle769 Yay! You got your new Chow! Yes potty training is one of the most challenging parts of having a puppy but really important to start the minute you get them. They need to know or be told/guided where in their new home they are allowed to potty. Chows are very smart and generally very clean so they wouldn’t really make a mess (pee or poop) where they sleep/stay. Potty pads work especially if you have very limited space in your home (not everyone has a big garden or lawn). There are potty pads infused with a smell that encourages puppies to go. Others use a puppy aid/attractant (you can try a brand called Simple Solution) - essentially you spray it on the pee pad or wherever you want your pup to go, it has a special scent that helps train them where to pee/potty. As for my pups, I slept near them on their first 2 months at home, i wake them up every 2 hours to go potty whether they feel like going or not, i bring them out to the garden until they get that that’s where they were supposed to do their business. I even trained my Caucasian Shepherd to ring a potty bell I placed by the door, so I’d know when he wants to go even if I’m in another room and can’t see him. Melo, my chow, just sits by the door to the garden quietly, and will wait for you to open it. If your pup is trained on the pad and you want to eventually teach her to go potty outside, you can gradually move the pad, inching/moving it daily to where you wish for her to go. It’s important to reward them with praise (I clap like crazy like I won the lottery and give them kisses every time they go on the designated area, hee hee) and treats if necessary. Positive reinforcement is always a good thing. It’s very tedious but your efforts and patience will pay off. I hope this helps. And please hug your new baby chow for me! Exciting times! I love puppies!

hot spots solution ? Chow chow
@pattymostlikely
@pattymostlikely Жыл бұрын
Hello! It’s always best to clip fur on and around the hot spot to let the wound breathe and dry out. I use a safe antiseptic like betadine wound spray or solution to clean it twice a day. Others use an e-collar to prevent the pup from licking or scratching the wound. As long as the wound is exposed to air and dry out, it should be okay in about a week. You can also try applying virgin coconut oil after cleaning the wound to help it heal or you can use this: aromapaws.com/hot-spot-solutions/hot-spot-spray to help it heal faster and lessen the itch. But if the hot spot is bigger than you can handle or in an area that’s impossible for you to clip the fur around on, it’s always best to bring your pup to the vet to avoid or prevent infection. Hope this helps. 🙏🏻😊

@@pattymostlikely his name used to be shaker but since I gave him that second chance at life I named him cooper since he acts and reminds me so much of my old cooper (he was a rottweiler lab mix) so hes cooper the 2nd and also I couldn't see myself at a dog park calling shaker 🤣💙 and it would be an honor if cooper got to meet more chows not too many in Washington. during the winter he has his longer fur and most assume pure chow and or Akita and during summer I keep him short and basically shaved and most assume a pitbull 🤣 (not to be mean but because even with like a few inches of fur he went to go potty outside within 5 mins of being out there in the shade he had the first stage of heat stroke and I knew how to help fix it) and even since then I dont chance it during the summer I keep him basically bald so that wont happen again I rather keep him alive by being bald then him have fur and die within mins of being out in the heat dont help hes black coated but obviously shaving him isn't hurting his medium hair as his furs is always soft and glossy and thick especially for the winter time

@@maryssawelch6099 Cooper the 2nd! I love it! :) Shaving to skin isn’t advised for double coated doggies and I am not sure if your Cooper is double coated since he is a mix (if he is more pit bull than chow etc.). But, truly, you are the best person to figure your own dog’s comfort and I trust that you care for him so lovingly well and make the best decisions for him. I love that you are so in tune with what Cooper the 2nd needs! Hugs to both of you, from me and my fur bugs!:)

Rose Patra Hi, Rose! Congratulations! Wow, yes, 4 months is such an adorable age ! I’m so happy and excited for you and baby Ella (lovely name!), and it’s great that she’s properly socialized early (just take extra care and choose a safe environment if her vaccinations aren’t complete yet.😊). A puppy changes your life for the better! I wish you and Ella a beautiful life full of fun, adventure and cuddles! Thank you, Rose! ❤️

Someone dumped an elderly chow chow dog on me after his dog mom passed. Im so distressed and worried. I have to Chihuahuas and worry for there safety
@pattymostlikely
@pattymostlikely 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Sarah:) First of all, it’s really kind of you to have opened your home to the poor Chow who must be feeling confused and sad from losing his dog mom. However, I do understand where your concerns are coming from, given that Chows have a reputation that precedes them and that they are mostly loyal to one human only (but not all Chows are the same, you’d be surprised at how loyal they are once you gain their trust). It would be best not to put him and your two chihuahuas in the same area. Besides, the orphaned Chow needs to decompress. But if you don’t think you are ready to welcome him into your home for the long haul and would like someone who is more versed in caring for and training a Chow, you can try contacting @chowchowrescue Chow Chow Rescue Society Inc., they’re a non profit organization located in Jacksonville, Florida but you can message them on their Facebook and Instagram pages for assistance. They may be able to help you find a good home, a foster home or a forever home, for the orphaned Chow. Or you might know someone willing to put in the work and has the time and resources to learn about how to patiently train and love the Chow as their own. Please take care and stay safe and take it easy. I believe you will make the best decision for you, your chihuahuas and the orphaned chow in due time. Again thank you for giving him a place to stay after he lost his dog mom, no matter how temporary. It takes a kind and generous heart to offer him the help he needs.

Nic B haha! Yes that’s how it usually is with puppies! 😅 play biting is something you have to deal with for awhile! You can try saying “no” and turning away from him for awhile every time he play bites. He will soon get that when he bites, you will stop giving him attention/playing with him. Giving him treats when he lets you brush him also helps to train him to associate good behavior with treats. Hang in there new Chow dad! (Puppy training takes a lot of time and love and patience but pays off in the long run!) You got this! 😊👍🏻🐾

Hi! Oh no 😢 But it’s not uncommon, most chows really try to avoid everything that has to do with bathing, grooming etc. I do hope, with your loving patience, your chow gets to enjoy “spa day” as a way of bonding even more, with you.😊🐾

Eilen Soener Hi! Oh no! :( But yes, Chows are known to be inherently stubborn and independent and they also have individual/unique personalities, (which actually makes them even more charming to me) 😅 We just made sure we desensitized our Chow early on and got him used to things that might be difficult to correct once he got older, like touching his paws, taking baths, clipping nails etc.😊 Chows are very smart though, I’m sure with a lot of love and patience, (and treats!😂) you can get your chow accustomed to things he/she hates!😊 I’m sure no matter what, you love your Chow just the same. ❤️

@@pattymostlikely that’s great advise! My dog always yips when I start nail clipping and I immediately stop out of fear I’ve hurt her. She knows how to manipulate me! At least I do some of the desensitization exercises, like examining her teeth, eyes, and ears. I tell her all about how good she is and how pretty her teeth (etc) are. This is probably gross, but she loves smelling everything, so as a reward I let her smell my knuckles after I’ve looked in her ears. I think she trusts me more because of this interaction. She was five when I got her, and she would not allow any sort of examination back then.

tucats Oh my! I do the same thing with the ear inspection! They like sniffing my fingers too after I “inspect” their ears, so I let them!😂 it builds trust and strengthens your bond (no matter how odd it sounds 😅). Awesome how you got your doggie at 5 but still reinforced training/desensitizing. Dogs will learn anything taught to them with love and patience. I also believe they recognize and respond to kindness, easily. They’re amazing that way.❤️🐾 Hugs to you and Sugar!
