Everything he said here is true and accurate. If you think you have enough wood, double it. They'll burn anything you can fit in the door. The best thing i ever did was start collecting wood 2yrs before we installed our heatmor OWB. Its been the most rewarding science experiment I've ever been a part of.

Loved your video on the Hardy Wood Stove. We have had ours for the last 15 years here in Southeastern Iowa and we wouldn't change a thing. Love cutting wood and having free heat!

Where I live people will often lay out free firewood by the road with a cardboard sign saying something like "help yourself". I have some family that lives remotely. They have electricity but they use well water and burn their trash or and recycle in town (they shop at bulk stores & avoid plastic wrap as much as they can). I always pick up firewood for them on my way up to visit them because my uncle takes great pride in providing heat for his family. I think people forget that for many people it's a point of pride to provide things like heat for their families.

Thanks for being honest on their wood usage for those furnaces. I have a wood furnace attached to my gas furnace and I know how much wood it uses. Another winter here we go.

I have a new gasification style outdoor wood boiler, they are very efficient. Will probably use about 5 cords this winter. Very minimal smoke as well, can barely tell it's running.

Thank you, I took a look. It is an interesting design which looks like they are moving to the down draft wood gassifier design like Tarm indoor boilers. That should burn the volatile organics in the smoke kind of like an EPA wood stove. Have you done a video of it operation? That would be interesting. @@richarddabkowski2896

Well, I am proud to see that the company Ohio Wood Burner Ltd has made an effort to cover the heating expenses yet another year for their number one employee. However, it may be time to look into purchasing a more efficient model for next year's season. Knowing that the current model is using extreme amounts of wood products to heat number one employee's home, the more efficient machine would keep extra wood products in house to send out to Ohio Wood Burner Ltd customers at a profit. I would ask that this subject be brought up at the next meeting and voted on by the board ;)

Always look forward to Your video. We had a presurized system so it would protect the in house boilers.They do burn a lot of wood. But they do keep You with an endless supply of hot water. Before My stroke Our oil supplier gave Me a pile of pine pulpwood if I wanted it. It was enough to heat Our 2 homes the winter I was in rehab. Free heat!

Heating our homes with wood keeps us connected to what is real. Most people don't understand this and thats okay. We had a boiler at our old house for many years and loved all of the benefits. Currently we have a wood stove in the basement and one on the main floor. Just wanted to mention that burning garbage in a boiler can cause them to rot out pretty quickly. Thanks for the video!

I've been heating with an outside woodstove for almost 20 years, always buying used units due to price. I finally bought a new unit last year, Portage and Main Ultimizer series, and am pleasantly surprised with the increased efficiency, using about 50% less wood. As long as I can physically continue using it I will. Warm heat, incredible hot water for showers, and we are utilizing an energy source that would otherwise be wasted (I burn all wood from trees that have blown over). Cutting, splitting, and stacking firewood is also a great bonding time with my son. Hope to visit Ohio later this year for the Paul Bunyon Show. Just FYI, the new more efficient units have almost no smoke, SERIOUSLY, I can't believe the difference!

My wife and I are looking to get a P&M ultimizer as well, I’m hoping it will be this year but it might be next year. We have a 100acre wood lot so we have plenty of supply just got save for the boiler Cheers

I have the H-4 version... you are correct...it likes to be fed. I tend to load mine every 12 hours. Mine has a stainless baffle at the exhaust pipe inside the stove.

Great video Joe very informative. I have a dual system now airsorce and solar linked to a boiler stove so in winter can run the boiler stove which is like u pretty much free in summer and autum and spring solar and airsorce does the rest it's great. 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Hi Joe - its Big Rodders in Ireland. It's not just the fact that you have "free" heat. There's something primeval about processing logs and heating the house and family with your endevours. Folk tell me that I should retail my logs and use the proceeds on my oil boiler to heat the house. While that makes financial sense, it just wouldn't feel the same.

Up here in the great pine tree state we treat the water with glycol (antifreeze) in our outdoor “furnace” (they are call boilers here)

Not sure the square footage on your home my friend but you may want to think about upgrading the size of your water stove ? Your winters in Ohio are colder than mine in the lower foothills of Nc but I have a Taylor 450 , I plan to start looking to replace it next year since it’s over 20 years old now but I’m looking to find a 750, I’m heating a 2,700 sqft cabin and it does well but it was explained to me if your heating a lot the bigger the better, larger amount of hot water for circulation so the call requirement for fuel is less. I’m sure you are aware and these stoves do be expensive but best of luck when it’s time to replace it, Taylor’s are getting hard to find but a alternative is out, a man that worked for Taylor started building his own, basicly a Taylor but just different enough to avoid lawsuits lol

We had a ton of family in town this weekend. Nearly everyone was crying for us to open windows. Which we did. None of the nieces or nephews ran out of hot water during the shower marathon. We love our inefficient Hardy H4. We fored it up about the time your Podcast talked about not having fired yours up. We've been gathering a small UTV load every few days to take the chill off until Friday. Hardwood has been put into the firebox. We need to get together sometime. Maybe this week?

I have the same setup except except my stove is homemade in a small shed,when I used to log and sell firewood I had lots of wood and never worried about consumption,but these year I bought fifteen cords of wood,my stove has a forced draft and burn green poplar if necessary.

Could you install a steel baffle 4-5 inches below the chimney pipe, that extends from the back of the inner chamber about 75% of the way toward the front door? I don't know if that would help make it more efficient so that it can recirculate/reburn fumes a little as they rise around the baffle and keep the flames burning under the baffle so they don't fly up the chimney? I made a tiny woodstove once out of a steel ammo canister, and installing a baffle like described made a huge difference with efficiency and burn times (which were already super short since it was such a small stove).

My heating hot water is in a 4” nonperforated weeping tile along with our domestic house water,which gets heated while running beside the hot water heating pipes,I had to change the domestic water line and all I had to do was pull the old line out and new one in(attached to old line)and didn’t have to dig up the yard.

Another great overview of your heating system. Elaine from Canada here, your mild fall has shortened the wood-burning season, so maybe need a cord or two less? I started my wood and coal furnace up about 3-4 weeks ago it's my only heat source or I use kerosene when I just need to warm the house up in the morning. Mine is just for heat.

My 2007 Central Classic holds just shy of 400 Gallons of water and since moving to my new place in 2019. I went from 8 to 10 Cord to just under 5 Cord. My pump runs 24/7 and the Domestic heat exchanger is in the House and is near the floor so I get thermocycling for domestic hot Water. Only run it's pump to get the Cycle started then it is off for the rest of the Season. My Water temp is 145 to 155. No need for Tempering valves for hot water or the in-slab Heat. House stays a constant 74 Deg. When it gets cold out 20 deg or less I put in a brick cart load of Wood once every 24 hrs. I keep a lot of cardboard on hand cause the Fire goes out, LOL

Just wish I could run a wood furnace boiler. As it is in a residential area 2 fireplace inserts have to do. You don't have pallets, railroad ties, etc. under the wood pile. Is that because the wood won't sit on the ground more than a year?

Joe you are right on there with your Wood Burner. Almost did but stuck with the Stove Downstairs. They do require constant work but we'll worth it in the long run. Would you be able to burn used oil? Maybe help having two options and wouldn’t have to get quite as much wood. Maybe restaurants who throw gallons of oil away you could get for free.

hi there good show . can relate to almost every thing . i made mine 25+ years ago , but filled it with anti freeze . back then it was only 2.00 a gallon .pex lines was not even a thought along with no internet wasnt around for help . now one thing i did witch i love is my red light . something you may want to think about , and very simple to do , in short buy a clamp/strap aqua stat,hook it to a copper line ,hook it up to a LED flood light you can see from the house . set it ti come on around 5 Degrees below boiler come on set point . lets you know if it needs wood with out leaving your warm house . cost not sure now maybe 100 around 1 hour to install , well worth it , if interested and need more info hit Dan for my # . best to all john

Joe, I am 72 years old. I worked for a Fortune 50 company for 35 years. That company was Anheuser-Busch, Inc. That company was bought out by a Belgin beer company in 2008, and with that came a buy out for many long-term employees with years of experience and knowledge. I was one of those employees that retired. Two years later I received a call from a person that was at the new company who worked for me at one time. He said, "we need you back". I asked him why...he told me no one know what they are doing with the new company and the new company had no plan on how to replace us. That company is now struggling because they had no plan...Joe make a plan to keep your business running in case you can't work for a few weeks or months. It will make or break your small business. Is this a reupload? It sounds so familiar… Well, I just wrote to an chimney retailing company how much a hot water producing indoor furnace will be. We do a lot of firewood to sell and as with you, we do have plenty of scrap-wood we need to get rid of. Up to now we burn it in a classical Chimney but that can be improved to also hot water and central heating system feed. Was this possible to understand?

I agree with the free heat. My boiler also does the hot water. 2,000 sq ft house boiler 70 feet out use 7 cords/year. Use a tankless propane water heater for summer. Got mine just before the obama rule changes, new ones not as good. Well Dun!

Good morning Joe with todays technology the two stage or gasification boilers are a lot more efficient that your dinosaur . But they are more demanding to keep clean and they do want a better quality of wood . Plus they can be very expensive . However they do have a lot of befits too . they use less wood and burn longer between refills . I'm sure you may have looked at them in case your Hardy ever needs to be replaced .

I agree about the new stoves and tech. I'm all for it but for me it would never make $$ sense. I hope to be moved out of this house in a few years and I would not want to be filling a stove to the age needed for my ROI

They do not. I would think this would lower your general risk to the house. The fire and carbon monoxide risks are removed.

They may call your free heat not so free. But you are not the one running to the gym and eating tofu and silage for dinner. The wood is a byproduct of your business. If you do not do something with it, it will become an eye sore. If the ninny’s took the time to calculate the amount of money you are saving with your unsalable wood. It is more like a paycheck from the gas company to not use their products. I personally happen to know 3 people that spent over 3 thousand dollars for propane last year and froze themselves while doing it. I know for certain I can buy a 10 cord load logs and a saw for much less. Skip going to the gym and still indulge on real meat and potatoes. No tofu for me. Great video. Keep being prosperous.

People did just that burn everything and anything here in Massachusetts and now they are banned state wide. I totally get it your neighbors shouldn't have to smell your trash burning. People that have them grandfathered in are still using them I believe.

I looked into this and OWBs are not banned statewide in Mass. Local municipalities can keep them from being put into their town. The state has a number of rules that have to be met but looks like there is no blanket ban. They all work for Ohio Edison and Amerigas!!😂 Besides not having a high utility bill, you get the secondary benefit of the disposing of all those cut-off pieces you generate. With all the saw dust and splitting waste that comes off the Japa and Axis, just think if you had to deal with finding a place to dispose of what your outdoor stove takes care of! *** Log-hauler Jessie spotted! Hi Milo, Free? Yes, if I discount the four wheel drive, skid steer with grapple aþtachment, five Husqvarna chainsaws, two commercial log splitters, half dozen wood handling tools, wood stove and annual chimney cleaning, visits to doctors and chiropractors and cases of Ben Gay, then yes, wood heating is free. At least that is the MARANGUE I've been feeding my wife for 50 years. Viva la Free! Shalom/gw PS I thought about the hot water thang, but I doubt I could afford recovery at a burn center! Keep sellin'!

I mean he is using the waste wood from his fire wood business witch is self sustaining and it is a way to dispose of the off cuts (cookies) but you make a good point about the soft costs. But what gets me thinking is if you just take free tree service wood would that be worth it ? I has to depend on the cost to heat in your area

@ohiowoodburner In the fall of 1995 the doctors at the Falk clinic in Pittsurgh gave me two years to live, due to a congenital disease. My wife asked me if there was anything I wanted. We drove to a local New Holland dealer where I bought a new skid steer. On the day they delivered it, there was a huge pile of leaves next to the creek. I fired up the skid steer and pushed them onto the creek bank. She looked at me with a look of doubt. I had to think fast. So I put her in the seat and proceeded to show her how to operate it. Just then, as if on cue, a friend pulled into our driveway and said, "Wow! You look just like Sigourney Weaver!" That bought a huge grin. Ever since, she runs the skid steer and I wrestle the wood. LOL Shalom/gw. PS That death sentence? I was tested problem free two years later. The doctors said there was no record of anyone being cured of my ailment and asked what I'd done. I said I had six churches praying for me. i've tested negative ever since. God is good all the time and all the time God is good!

My neighbor/friend had a medium sized Heatmor (OWB), which produced so much smoke, it covered the road like fog! It was about 15 feet high (the smoke), and you couldnt see thru it, when you drove thru it. Impressive! He later got the biggest Heatmor, that would hold 1/2 full cord of firewood at a time. With -30° fahrenheit weather, he could burn 1 full cord per day. He operated a tree service business, hence, he had unlimited free firewood. He once threw a dead deer carcass in his Heatmor, and the next day, "only the teeth" were to be found in the ashes. I considered an OWB, but our house is super insulated, and is medium sized. An OWB made no sense, other than filling it twice per day as a hobby. Our soap stone stove, and wood furnace (which we rarely use) are a good backup heating source. An OWB is like belonging to a religion! You have to "do services" 2 times per day in the winter. It is a regular duty every day. It costs you "time", and money. But, it is a good thing! Great video! Cutting, splitting, and piling firewood is great, but burning it is even better! Who knows, it may be illegal in the future. The end!

As you buy your wood for your business (= expense) and keep the odds and ends for yourself , I wonder how you can clear this fiscally? No answer needed Joe 😀 If you would buy here Lets say 100 cords (expense) and sell 90 cords (revenue) I think our tax administration would have some questions. OK with drying times you can “play” a little of course haha

No thanks, Ill pay the utility bill. I've got better things to do than being a slave to a woodstove. I have a woodstove in my garage I use once in a while just as a comfort fire and heat. I get free wood and its not too much work. I burn maybe 2 cords over 6 months.

so lets say your gas bill would be $200/month for 4 months of cool/cold weather thats $800 and add a coouple hundred for year round hot water- $1000 if you spend an hour per day for a year fooling with firewood-365 hours annually(some more some less depending on the season) then you value your time at less than $3/hr would you go to work for someone for $3/hr???????? not only do you value your time at less than $3/hr, that 365 hrs spent working for a wage, lets say a mere $10/hr somewhere, would yield you $3,650/year so not only is your wood fetish not free, it is costing you THOUSANDS of dollars per year foolish

Joe, I have a Central Boiler. 20 years old now. I get cheap to free wood plus I burn 5-7 cords a year. But do have a cost of dump trailer, Saws, spliter, and Loader. You are right it's a hobby. I paid $8500 for mine 20 years ago. Used to buy logs or firewood poles. I haven't bought wood since the new dump trailer in 19. I clean up after a tree service. Probably got 20 cords this year. Sold 6 cords of Big Wood. It all cut to length. And I sell it cheap unsplit.. 25-40 inches diameter. Also haul slabwood. Keep up the good work Joe. Be careful

If your time is money and you want free heating then build a solar water heater that tracks the sun. It will cut down the heating bill massively.
