Thanks for watching How I Keep Crickets Alive & Cut Cost in our Feeder Insect Series and be sure to check out the Feeder Insect Playlist to see other great projects. This was just an example of how I kept my crickets and why I no longer have problems keeping them healthy, so you can choose to use my method as a guide but I always recommend doing research so you can customize a solution that works best for you.
I will also like to add doing weekly keeper cleaning and changing their food multiple times a week for the best results. It's always best to raise your own crickets to ensure they are being kept and fed well so they are a healthy food or treat for your pet. If ever in doubt when buying crickets trust your instincts and also consider getting back up for your reptiles, for example, Reptaid in the event your pet gets sick. It's great for their immune system and helps with parasites etc.

As a breeder of insects its good to dial back and see from other perspectives and you did a fantastic job with this video. You have a little humor as well as valuable info. I'll be trying the dimmer with timer since I breed in mass quantities, I can see that saving me a lot of $$. It's refreshing to see you feed them only the best which is so important.

Loved this video! The last two times I've gotten crickets they've died so quickly I'll loose like 7 a day so I'm going to try some of these modifications for sure! Two questions, how often do you remove the fruit and veggies because when I tried having fresh fruit it would start to mold very quickly. Question 2, could you please do a video of how you clean the crickets, how you remove all of them to clean out the poop and how often you do a full removal and cleaning please!!

Thanks for stopping by. I tend to swap out food every 2-3 days but it depends on how many crickets are being kept. I usually add enough so they can consume most of it before it gets any mold. As for cleaning their bins I plan on doing a video sometime. In this video at 2:47 you'll notice I'm using the scraper and I also use 2 bins which is similar to when I'm adding them as seen later in the video. Just be sure to wash and dry thoroughly then add the new eggs crates etc😊

they can hide in and around many things, even burrowing if you have them soil to live in. but the eggcrates are just one more option for something that you can generally acquire cheaply and in large amounts of at least, quick to find and buy.

Hey brother, really enjoyed the quality of your video and your willingness to share information with others. I wanted to share something with you as well. You expressed your dislike for the odor from the crickets, there is a medium that can be obtained very inexpensively called vermiculite, it makes an excellent substrate all on its own for the base of the terrarium and will absorb most if not all of the odor from the cricket excrement. I hope you will benefit from this information or have possibly already become aware of it prior to this comment. God bless you as well brother, may the peace of our savior be upon you. ✌🕊💚

I just started with crickets. Having issues with cannibalization, but I did figure out how to mitigate the smell. I lay down a tiny bit of activated charcoal and then a thin layer of vermiculite as a substrate. When its time to clean I dump the bins into a container (the vermiculite and cricket refuse is valuable for my terrarium substrates) and then wipe the empty bin down with alcohol. I'm going to try putting together food more like what you're showing. I was giving them a powdered bug feed and hydrated water crystals but I'm still experiencing fairly high rates of cannibalism, so I don't think its cutting the mustard.

@pershop4950
@pershop4950 3 жыл бұрын
it's a good idea on re-using the vermiculite and charcoal but how often do you need to add or change your terrarium substrate? for the cannibalism, it's also possible there aren't enough hiding spaces, or you have too many in the enclosure.

@@gates1980 As long as it provides heat, it should. However, in my personal experience, I’ve found that anything labeled “for reptile use” is much more expensive. I simply shake the egg trays with crickets into a clean container similar to like what I used in this video, I then clean the enclosure/aquarium and add new trays, food etc. You don't have to use crickets, I just like variety for my reptiles. You can raise meal and superworms or even silkworms which is cleaner. There is also an option for dubia roaches since they can't fly or climb on plastic containers and they don't smell like crickets. I did a 4 part series on different insects so check out my feeder insect video playlist and see which is best for you.

if you only keep on hand, a few crickets that you have to go buy more every other day, and you're not feeding those crickets to something else , then chances are they are eating each other. just keep more food or hiding places in your enclosure. Now, to say they are eating each other, it may not mean they are attacking each other while alive. It's possible the crickets are dying, and then their corpse gets eaten. So just check your environment and make sure you're able to keep the crickets alive until feeding time as well.

Trying to keep them alive is difficult, i bought over 60 from pet store and over 6 died in one night. I only need to keep em alive for about 2-3 weeks to feed my frogs, i feed em carrots. Do i need a big enclosure for 60 medium sized crickets? i keep them in a 1 gallon plastic tub, is that enough?? do crickets fight and kill each other??

Sorry for the late response. I would recommend more room, just get a bigger cheap plastic tub and ventilate the lid and keep temps in the high 70's

Sorry I did not get an alert and now seeing this. I usually keep between 72 to 76 degrees if my house temp drops. I have a 75 watt heat bulb and simply adjust the heat as needed with the adjust switch as mentioned

i have a question. i have a toad that eats extra small crickets. if i keep feeders crickets in a tank, how do i catch the crickets when its time to feed my toad? do i use a net or do i have to try to reach in and catch each cricket by hand? i want to keep my own feeder cricket set up cause diving to the pet store every week is getting tiresome, but i can't figure the feeding part out. Right now i buy them in a small container and i pick up the whole container and shake a few into a sandwich bad and then dust them with calcium powder.

you can also keep an object in the cricket home. when you need to feed your toad, take that object, shake it into a container (eg, whether it's 5 or 50 that fall into the container). take that container to your toad, shake in a few crickets to the toad's feeding enclosure, and then take the rest of the crickets back to their normal home area.

I have a pet cricket named Jiminy Cricket. I Actually use a low-heat heating pad and he is spending all night just sitting on it. He really likes bananas and he's been doing really well. I really want to warm up to him enough to handle him. I have three enclosures I could've put him in, but I wanted to stay in the biggest enclosure. So only one cricket is in a 10 gallon tank-like mesh that keeps humidity and heat.

I've heard you have to remove dead crickets ASAP otherwise you can get parasites that will be passed on to your reptiles. This doesn't make sense to me as if they don't have parasites, not sure how they suddenly do when they die. Anyone have any info on this?
@kripkethechameleonfriends4505

At the end of the day the body is decomposing and they'll likely feed on it, so it's best to remove and try to buy from reputable vendors with crickets in good health to lower the risk of pinworms etc
