This is great thank you so much!!! I'm going into political journalism as well and everyone keeps telling me to just work for the local paper but I don't want to settle, and it's encouraging to hear stories of people like you. I found this video just at the right time as I'm applying for a couple of DC internships, so hopefully your tips will help! :)

You're such a natural. I love that you're just you. I'm in DC for a summer internship, but I'm applying for fall internships right now. This was super helpful. Thank you!

I finished my CNN London internship earlier this year. Wish this video was around as you have great tips! My interview wasn't hard - which is definitely an anomaly - but I think the fact I'd shadowed and had experience there before helped my application stand out. I now freelance there and I'm learning a lot! My dream job is to be a reporter or anchor one day.

That's great to hear! You can definitely do it. Do you have any other internships you want to do? Maybe BBC? Looking back I wish I had done a radio internship. Knowing how audio works can really help you as a reporter.

good point! i had a radio show at university and some experience at BBC radio. right now i'm focusing on climbing up the employment ladder rather than internships, i've done quite a few! i'm also doing camera training as i see so many video producer roles around. thanks for your encouraging words!

Do you have any in depth interview prep videos? I have an nbc and cnn digital interviews this week and I don’t feel prepared at all. I’ve done a ton of prep, but I don’t think I’m ready. (My interview are for PR and Comm) I’ve also never had a media internship. I’m surprised to even have an opportunity to interview. I haven’t the slightest idea what to expect.

Hi Victoria! First off congrats on getting two interviews! I would say know a brief history about each place and do research on who your interviewing with. Tell them where you want to go in your career and how this internship will help you reach your goals. Convince them why you and how you'll be a good an intern that goes above and beyond. Remember an interview is just a conversation that is a little more professional. Be yourself, be confident in your skills and abilities, and know that God has a plan for you. Good luck. Go got this!!

Thank you so much for the tips! Sounds like a dream! What would you suggest for people who want to intern out of state and don't have the ability to network in person for those companies?
@GirlwithDrive4 жыл бұрын
Hi Haley! Like if you live out of state but want to intern at a company in another state? I would definitely utilize LinkedIn and try to set up informational interviews. Attend Zoom webinars on certain topics (there's so many for college students/job seekers and email the panel after thanking them and introducing yourself. Also join Facebook groups! MMJane is great for women journalists and you can find out openings/past experiences from people younger and older.

Great video! I have a question. Do you remember how long took the cnn to contact you for an interview? :)
@GirlwithDrive5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! It was awhile. CNN hires late for their internships. I found out a few days before Christmas that I got hired for a Spring internship (starting in January). I believe my phone interview was towards the end of November. HR might reach out to you first to set up the interview and ask you just a few questions. Let me know if you have any questions and feel free to email me info@girlwithdrive.com.

thank you so much for this video, very informative! :) just one quick question, do you think it's too late for someone who's graduated to get an internship at cnn? any tips on how to go about this?
@GirlwithDrive4 жыл бұрын
Hi Sonia! Thanks for watching. There's a program for graduates called the Desk Assistant program which is like an internship (but better) where you rotate desks (so different shows and departments) for I think 12-18 months. Back in 2014 the pay was $17/hr so I'm sure it's higher now. They have them in NY, DC and Atlanta I know for sure.

Hello, thanks for the tips! But what was the entertainment media internship that you did before you went into hard news?
@GirlwithDrive5 жыл бұрын
Hi Ashley, from 2011-early 2013 I worked for an entertainment website where I reviewed/recapped reality tv episodes and interviewed the characters. It was cool back then because the Style Network and VH1 would send me DVD episodes of shows months before they premiered.

Julia you got this! Give plenty of solid examples of your work and if you ran into any challenges. You can definitely include school projects or past internship work. Also how you generate ideas, especially for events coming up.
