In Manila yes but if you go to Batangas, Quezon, Laguna or Mindoro you will hear more kind of deep tagalog. Of course they also use some English words but not like they switch half way in the sentence to English. It’s more like 80/90 tagalog 10 english

My mom is from the Philippines and tried teaching my siblings and me Tagalog when we were young. The teachers at school actually told her to stop! So I don't speak my mother's language. Throughout my life, I've tried to learn Tagalog on my own but it has always been super difficult. I learned Spanish as an adult because it is a super high utility language in my region (Texas) and it gave me the confidence I needed to try one more time with Tagalog. After learning Spanish, I'm noticing how difficult it is to find resources to learn Tagalog. You can't take a class at the community college, or join a conversation group at the library, or find well-organized and engaging textbooks. It's hard for me to learn from my mom because she doesn't understand languages the way language learners do (sentence constructions, 1st person vs 3rd person, etc.) And then there's a whole world of weird language politics where other Filipino people in my area just try to make me feel as guilty and "fake" as they can because I can't already speak Tagalog :( Not a lot of them are willing to sit there with me and help me learn I'm not going to give up on it again just yet, but the lack of available resources definitely makes it difficult.

Me as well. No one in my Filipino side of my family will teach me (I'm in America). They always laugh at my pronunciation when I try to say words (they keep telling me to repeat Tagalog words so they can get a good laugh). What's nice is that when I visited the Philippines, my family there actually taught me! Sadly, I had to eventually leave and I forgot everything. Ah well, I'm learning Spanish and French, so that's something! Edit: Oh yeah, Filipinos around me think I'm fake as well. LOL, I was called a "Twinkee" once (which means yellow on the outside, white on the inside).

I'm right there with you! I live in Australia. I often get a 'pass', though, because I'm only half. I can speak more Korean than I can Tagalog (elementary level), which makes people confused haha. I'm choosing to learn Tagalog slowly through conversations with my mum.

Another one here! I was born as a Filipina born Spanish. My parents thought it wouldn't be useful for my future career to learn tagalog because it would make it harder to me to stick with Spanish. And here I am understanding and speaking Spanish, English, Catalan and even a little bit of French, but not knowing anything of my supposed first language. I can understand some phrases because my parents talk to themselves in tagalog and watch a lot of filipino teleseryes or reality shows, but I don't know how to speak it. I felt that too, I always felt excluded from the filipino community from my area because of the same thing... But I'll try my best to learn it! If I learnt easily four languages, a fifth one won't stop me! Even if Lindie has taken a break with learning Tagalog she has inspired me a lot to do so.

Hey Lindie. I am a Filipino living in Germany. I am now studying German and Icelandic, and will soon dabble with classical Latin. As a native speaker of Tagalog, I take for granted its grammar and how its complexity allows for a more nuanced expression of tense, mood, and aspect. Not until I studied heavily inflected languages such as German and Icelandic. So I can totally relate with the struggle!! I do however admire your persistence and honesty. What I like about Tagalog is that one can vary the level of formality by the amount of foreign loans one uses. Tagalog spoken without or almost no Spanish/English loans sounds literary, very formal and perhaps even archaic. For example, we almost never use "subalit" or "ngunit" in everyday speech but instead prefer the Spanish "pero" for "but". You often find those in song lyrics though. Tagalog without English words but retaining Spanish loans sounds "normal-ish" but still a bit more formal than simply speaking in Taglish (Tagalog infused with English). The extreme form is code-switching to English mid-sentence (like you did at 0:09) which is quite common in Manila. You have a very good Tagalog accent by the way! :)

Hi Lindie! It’s really cool to know that you’re learning Tagalog, and seeing your progress in it (and all the other languages) is absolutely inspiring! Your accent is great! I grew up in Mindanao, and we didn’t speak an ounce of Tagalog at home. My family spoke Cebuano and I consumed western cartoons like there was no tomorrow. In the school I went to, we only started learning Tagalog formally in the 3rd grade. But I did grow up watching Filipino movies (Magic Temple/Magic Kingdom; AngTV: Ibong Adarna; Dolphy, Redford White and Babalu movies). I agree that movies are great resources for acquiring the language. I don’t practice Tagalog that much so I’m terrible at speaking, but I can understand it just fine. Probably the reason why there aren’t a lot of textbooks on Tagalog is because we get by using English. So yes to learning through movies! I’ve read in the comments that some Filipinos that grew up abroad experienced a bit of discrimination when it came to them learning the language. I’m sorry you had to go through something like that. Someone mentioned language politics and there’s definitely something like that here. I’m also guilty of that, unfortunately. Please don’t let the naysayers stop you. It really sucks when you’re learning and people are bringing you down. But please do continue! It’s your own language journey. Tagalog is a beautiful quirky language, most especially if it speaks to your own identity. So are Cebuano, Hiligaynon, Waray, and all the other Filipino languages and dialects. Huwag kayong sumuko! ☺️ Padayon lang!

Wow, really nice! It's alright if Tagalog is not a priority as of this time. As a Filipino, most kids nowadays don't speak Tagalog as much as during my time because parents want them to be better in English. My nephew doesn't know how to speak Tagalog much and he'll only know how to respond if the sentence/word is translated to him in English. I'm Filipina born American, and my parents never taught me Tagalog! The accent of my voice definitely would be different if I talked Tagalog/Ilocano/Kankanaey or other dialects at home and learned English at school. I'll never know if I would've had a hard time learning two languages at once growing up. Little opportunity to practice Tagalog does influence priority in language learning, and that's totally okay! Andaming lolas (a lot of grandmas LOL) at my church are only able to speak Tagalog, but I'm able to understand and respond to them for the most part when we talk.

Cool of you to learn Tagalog! Nice touch with the "sana all" at the end lol, that's quite a new slang (just appeared like 3 years ago), and I'm impressed that you know it! One constructive tip though if you don't mind (from a native speaker), at the start, you said "Natututo ako ng Tagalog." So technically, that's right, it means "I'm learning Tagalog", but native speakers often use the word "matuto" only in the passive sense of the word, not the active sense. So if you're studying the basics of Tagalog, and you're like doing the exercises, reading the lessons, etc. that action would be "nag-aaral", and "natututo" would be a result of those actions. I guess your clue should be the prefix "na-" or "ma-" which is a passive prefix, meaning if a verb has that prefix, it means you're not actively doing the action itself. Sorry for the long explanation lol, I hope it makes sense. Btw, I'm also learning Hungarian, just started this month (I have a friend in Hungary so I got interested lol), and the vocab is quite a struggle lol so I feel your pain :)) Good luck in your language learning lol! :)

I planned to learn 12 languages in 2022. 5 I'm already learning the other 7 are new but I want to learn them for ages now. Japanese for example is on the list since I was 16 but I was insecure feld I'm the stupiest person in the universe so I never really started. But I want to change the game next year. You were my inspiration to try it. All 7 languages are heart languages I want to learn them so badly. I'm already studying English, Dutch, Swedish, French and Hawaiian The new languages in order of wanting them to learn are Japanese, Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Russian, Danish and Mandarin. I'm not really sure how to do it but I'll give it a try. I stopped with Spanish but maybe I start again. Don't know yet. Thanks for the update

As a Filipino, I am so surprised on your Tagalog Ms. Lindie and it was great! I think there is a different accent I hear when you speak. I dunno what it is but it's like the Americans' accent when speaking Tagalog. No pressure on learning, just do what you do and prioritize what needs to be prioritize. Salamat po sa pagmotivate sa amin sa pag-aaral ng mga lengwahe! 😍 Hanggang sa muli!

Just a small tip (if ever you see this, hopefully) as a native tagalog speaker, rather than “hindi/di ko alam” for like a random “i dont know” phrase, say “ewan ko” instead bc that sounds more natural Also with “natututo ako ng tagalog” if you meant is like currently learning (which means more like studying) just say “nag-aaral ako ng tagalog” bc “natuto” is typically used as like “natututo na ako mag tagalog” which basically translates to (bc there’s no direct translation to english) “I’m finally earning tagalog” as to state that you’re making a progress in learning but it’s still an ongoing and you’re not yet done or fluent by any means. It’s just there’s a progress in your learning I hope I explained it well enough to understand, I’m not really good at explaining i just felt like i could give a few advice as a speaker bc these both sounds more natural and native-like

First of all, Filipino here. :) Also, a really passionate linguist too haha. I wouldn't give anyone too hard of a time to make the decision to drop learning Tagalog. Honestly, if there is a language that is a "luxury" language--in that you'd really need an exceedingly special reason/great source of inspiration to do so--Tagalog is probably one of them. Even Filipino parents *very unfortunately* opt not to teach kids Tagalog and chalk it up to potentially confusing their children. I respect their decision, but also fully disagree with this notion. So, for any adult to even have a mild interest in learning the language, is already a lot. And, from hearing how Lindie pronounced the words she does know, with no exaggeration, I'm genuinely impressed. It shows just how much effort had been put in up until this point to learn the language. To get to this point is nothing short of easy, I'm sure. So, thank you Lindie for showing a spotlight on this part of your language learning journey. I will continue to follow along your language road, as a source of inspiration and motivation. :)

ughhh same! that's why when I get "tired" of one language, I made a rule to myself that I can be "distracted" by learning another hahahah. so like if I'm supposed to study Spanish today but am really not in the mood for it, I can listen to dutch songs or watch Japanese series instead so in that way, I feel like I'm not just wasting my time doing something that's not productive and I'll be pissed with myself later for it. of course it slows my progress but better than nothing right?

I was one of those filipinos that's excited for your Tagalog learning(filipina subscriber here hahah). I watch almost all of your videos and since you haven't really posted much about Tagalog, I'm not surprised. there's definitely a lack of resources & it can be frustrating. I'm trying to learn dutch through mostly watching series and listening to songs but it's kinda hard because even with vpn, lots of it don't have English subs and I'm a complete beginner so it's really hard to follow. it's hard to learn through immersion while working in Japan haha. my 2 dutch friends also prefer to just talk to me in English. which I could imagine with your filipino coworkers, it most likely is the same. we filipinos try to be so accommodating and adjust for "foreigners" instead of making them speak our language hahaha. I suggest if you could get a few months off, maybe live somewhere in the Philippines(of course in an island that speaks Tagalog/ filipino as their mother tongue since other islands like Cebu speaks a completely different language), and then maybe you can volunteer to tutor some kids in English and sit in on their filipino classes then that way you'll start from the very basics and really have a solid foundation of the language. then you'll also be using filipino textbooks for gradeschool students. it'll be fun & the teacher is right there to explain things that might be confusing. so for public schools, we usually don't have enough books so we have to make our own copies. but for private schools, we get to keep our old books. maybe you can find some filipinos that still have their old books and use that instead when u do decide to get back to it. because I'm imagining, language books that are for self study and targeted towards adults, they try to keep it small and informative so it's easy to carry but could actually take the fun out of it. please update us once u decide to start Tagalog again! I'm still happy to watch your videos hahah

Ang cute mong mag-Tagalog Lindie! (。-ᴗ•)✧ I’m a Filipino and I appreciate your time and effort in learning my native language. Most Filipinos speak English or Taglish so I think there’s very little incentive in learning Tagalog for foreigners. But if there’s one thing that I love about our language the most is probably OPM (Original Pinoy Music). I have watched your other videos and since you love music, you might also be fond of OPM songs specially songs by Parokya ni Edgar & Eraserheads among others. Hope you like their songs! (◍•ᴗ•◍)

I think it's most helpful to keep a casual approach when acquiring Tagalog. The commonly spoken Tagalog here in the homeland (if i were to describe it to those who didn't grow up being surrounded by it) is always unfussy, very relaxed, casual and for the most part- Taglish (a mix of Tagalog and English). Acquiring the "philippine-ness" (for a lack of a better term) of the type of spoken Tagalog today, I believe is very similar to how you've acquired your Singlish expressions. We often use English phrases and sentences because the strictly Tagalog translation is either too long to write or it sounds too "deep" to say; imagine speaking in Old English tongue while ordering a double cheese burger meal at McDonald's- it's like that. 😁 We often just add Tagalog words at the end, which if emulated by a non native speaker, sounds VERY Filipino; not to mention, endearing. 😊 Ex: "Have you eaten NA?" ”Let's have lunch NA." * 'na' at the end means 'already' Or "It's really humid today NOH?" * 'noh' commonly translates to 'isnt it?' I hope this helps. The common sentences and phrases in books and formal video tutorials are very deep and not so practical. Acquiring the common Philippine manner of speaking is more like, passively picking up a mannerism; again referring to your Singlish experience. I'm just assuming that by now, you've swapped "excuse me" with "hello uncle/ auntie," say "lah" at the end of each declaration or use "can" and "cannot" more often now than before moving to Singapore. 😊

Learning Tagalog in the present age is easier esp when you speak English coz RightNow our language is half English, half Tagalog and some are in Spanish like como ESTA in Filipino kamusta. You can kutsara or spoon we understood that for beginners I suggest don't read books coz it will teach old Tagalog which Filipinos are also having hard time yo use it and when we use it people will say it crazy hehe. Start in your home, what you see there put equivalent Tagalog and tape it so in 1 month you already familiar with it then next step connecting words like gusto or like then go or punta sa banyo or bathroom.

@LindieBotes

It's quite tricky indeed and not what I would understand focus to be linguistically or even in a language like Hungarian. I find it easier to not think too much about the grammar and to take it just at face value - it's hard to explain, but thinking less and listening/immersing more seems to help so far!

@Zane Goebel - Everyday Indonesian The active di-/passive meN- conjugation in Bahasa Indonesia is more straightforward (the paN- prepositional conjugation works similarly as meN) than affixes in Filipino, primarily because of infixes that can completely change the nuance of a sentence. I can't even begin to explain it myself as someone of Indonesian descent born, raised, and living in the Philippines. It was one of the more challenging aspects of Filipino grammar to me, because my native language doesn't have it.
