I’m American and I’m trying to learn German, but I don’t want to have an accent. I’ve been watching SOOOOOO many “How I Learned English” videos trying to find someone who doesn’t have an accent so that I can copy their method and use it for German. You’re literally the only one I could find that sounds 100% American. Thank you so much for making in this video! I’ll definitely be using your advice to learn German.

in brief: In this video, the speaker shares their journey of learning English to a native speaker level before moving to the US from Russia at the age of 17. They started learning English at 14 and set a specific goal of speaking English like an American. The speaker realized they needed to create a comfortable, natural environment for learning English, so they started doing their hobbies in English and switched all their devices to English. They also applied a three-point system (learn, try, and do it yourself) to learning and practiced speaking English with others online or even talking to themselves. Additionally, the speaker studied American culture, watching movies, and analyzing people's communication styles. As a result, they felt prepared and comfortable when they arrived in the US. The speaker encourages others to try the methods they used, as they believe they can work for anyone who wants to learn English.

My native language is English, and I’m learning Japanese. I enjoy watching language learning videos occasionally regardless of the person’s native and target language. The part about treating your target language as your native language and staying relaxed very much related to. As I become overwhelmed by Japanese easily to the point of experiencing headaches that make me unable to continue. I’ve needed to listen to videos in Japanese while consciously making an an effort to relax to be able to absorb nearly anything.

I'm Ukrainian and I've been using your method just intuitively for 3-4 years, especially that I was so lucky to talk to many Americans out of Peace Corps...until the covid pandemic broke out and they were all brought home. I was nearly as fluent as probably you before settling in US...but now I live in Ireland for 7 months and....it's an entire struggle! Completely different accent and speech structure, I barely understand them from the first time and they don't always understand me either straight away without repeating...Meanwhile, many truly believe I'm American and deeply surprised when I say I'm not...

zero mystery or any "secret sauce" step one : move to the country where the language is spoken natively to study/work in the desired lang environment 24/7 step two: drop your other languages almost completely, leave mb 1-2 hrs a day for them, ideally reduce those to 0 voila! you're on track to becoming near native *bonus: starting as a young teenager helps a ton

I have a great level at listening and reading, but creating sentences and putting thoughts out is really difficult for me. I think I did a great job exposing myself to a lot of English, using musics, podcasts, books, and so on, but expressing your own ideas was something I didn't use to focus on. So, this "passive" learning method doesn't develop all the areas of English you need to become a fluent speaker. I find the filtration of things you learn a very useful advice, 'cause sometimes you learn a lot of new stuff you don't even use in your first language. Also, to be aware of cultural topics and references is crucial when it comes to understand humor, for example. I'll go back to my diary practices, and I hope I can speak like a native soon.

As for communication skills I learn whole sentences saying them aloud. 5 days - 300 repetitions per day at least. Later I don't need to translate. I know the meaning of words straight away like in my native language. And also I remember the meaning longer than by learning separate words. This method is called: chunking. It was a real game changer in my learning process in English and other languages.

I believe that speaking a second language fluently is not something everyone can achieve. I've been learning English for 4 years, and now I am 31, but I feel like I will never become fluent at all. If your goal is being advanced or native-like, the process is so frustrating and demotivating because no matter how much you study and practice English there are always times that you'll fail speaking-wise or listening-wise. In my opinion, some people like you have a sort of talent for languages so they can easily make huge progress in relatively short time.

I'm able to understand english up to a native level, though its obviously due to the circumstance that I was only able to use english since i was young. But living in an environment (rural parts of malaysia) where english is rarely used anywhere above "intermediate" level causes a deterioration-cycle of my english skills. By that i mean its not possible for me to 'lose' my capacity for english, seeing as to how its literally my only base language where i can construct coherent sentences. But the lack of thought/language stimulation from my daily life dampens my overall language comprehension. I can listen and read and write just as well as a native learner but ive never had the ability to form native-level conversations with people. I wonder if anyone - especially those who dont live in a native-ly-english speaking community without a fluent secondary language. (I do have malay but its nowhere near half of my english proficiency)

All good, but of course it helped you just living there after all, together with studying and everything. There are other fluent people on KZfaq with a good level already, then they immigrate overseas. Not everyone has a perfect accent of course but I think everyone becomes fluent after living - aka fully immersed in the context - in an English country for 10 years or more!

You know, I have to say, I don't quite agree. My husband's sister moved to Germany like 15 years ago. She's been living there, but she barely speaks the language. And honestly, it's not that uncommon. People move to a new country and never really pick up the local lingo.

@@marina.senkina I suppose he had no previous knowledge of German, plus it’s more difficult than English, but I understand what you mean because it depends on the person. Some people which are more visible when you turn on newest first in the comments are blindingly and insufferably being unnecessarily pedantic by calling out him for not being super-exactly like a native speaker. Wow, a second language speaker can never literally go back in time and change his first language? Who would have thought! To those people: acknowledge how learners can still gain from him and others similar _nonetheless_ , and don't underestimate just how *much* brainwork one has to take on to even get on this level, yes even with him having immigrated to the US and such. "The title should've been NEAR native speaker level, not otherwise!" look, I understand him more crisply than most others and legit would like to have a nice conversation with him about how he's trying to share his knowledge on KZfaq with people, if I could; and not with y'all judgemental folks.

You speak so clearly, but natives don't. Espessially Americans. Their speech is so hard to understand for me. But I won't give up, I listen, listen, listen more and more. Thanks for extra motivation

When I listen to you, it gets me thinking that you’re trying so hard to sound native. Like you think more about your pronunciation and grammar, but not the actual message. I might be wrong, just how it feels. Anyway, I love your videos. I learned a lot from them. Thanks for sharing

I have a question to those who don’t agree that the person in this video sounds like a native: 1. What do you believe gives him away as far as accent is concerned? 2. If you don’t believe you can totally sound like a native if you have acquired the language late in life, would you agree that it is possible to learn to sound like one some of the time, in other words, for instance, 70% or 50% of the time in a conversation? This is just an example. I am curious to know your thoughts.
