How I Learned Korean (for free/on my own)

In this video I introduce five ways I learned Korean. K-pop got me into Korean but I was never able to stick with the traditional studying method. I wanted to improve, but I simply couldn't get myself to buy textbooks and study at a desk. So I didn't. Yet 3 years later, I found myself speaking and understanding Korean and I thought I'd share some tips on how I did just that.

Talking to Koreans is good but in the UK what I noticed was that they will adapt to your Korean level so as to continue the conversation. Exactly how I would adapt my English to their level of English. It’s good practice but you often don’t get the full blast of native Korean as much as you’d like

Exercising your mouth to move in a different way is soooooo important….i can process words in my head, but sometimes have difficulty repeating something new, even if i know what it means without thinking about it. Exercise your mouth, people!!😆😆💜💜

I learned english by myself when i was around 12 or so, but i don't remember it being as difficult as it is to learn korean. I never had to study english bc the sentence structure is similar to my native language. But, to speak korean, watching tv series wasn't enough. I had to study hangul and particles and i'm still struggling a bit with grammar. But I think the differences are what make it so fun to study, cause everything's new. It's not easy but with a little bit of effort and patience you get there.

Definitely! Acquiring a language is a slow process that takes years and I'm well aware that I have an advantage with Korean due to my Japanese background. Of course watching tv series alone isn't enough but I think it helps create curiosity points (ex: "Oh, I've never seen that word before. Lemme look it up.") and also helps to maintain a connection with the language in a fun way. Your English is flawless btw!

@@diuliasilva7584 By your name... I guess you're from Brazil? I also learned English when I was younger and I studied a bit of Japanese back then too. Now I'm learning Korean and there are many similarities in grammar of both languages! If you learn some grammar in advance, it would be easier to learn the other language indeed.

OMG CARAT exactlyyyy i learned through singing along to seventeen songs n half of the vocabs n phrases i learned are from variety shows n try watching them without subs n look up unfamiliar words n then recall the words ive learned from the video. even if it may seem weird i talk to myself in Korean when there's something i want to express when im watching something or reacting to anything just cause i don't have a lot of instances to practice with another learner! i also watch Korean cartoons like hello jadoo to practice how much i understand without any subs!

I hope you make more Korean learning content. Your self study discipline is really inspiring. I’ve been studying for about four years and thankfully some has stuck but I can see you’re further along. I think using it is really key to remembering although apps like Anki help some. Nothing beats actually using it. I got to travel to Korea for a few weeks a year ago and I could feel the difference as soon as the plane landed. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to go back.

U are absolutely right about input and output Output is hard for introverts We can write thousands of messages on app When speaking somes We look up for invisible cloak 😂 I need u keep us motivated Cause koreon is really hard for beginners When u can understand ur favourite influencer Its just feels good and so rewarding that's my motivation keep ur work up and thanks for help

your tips are really useful and I am doing most of it right now~ I have been studying Korean religiously since last year and I think listening to Korean song then reading the lyrics is really helpful and also watching Korean shows and read the subtitles in hangul! I enjoyed that kind of learning process~ But nowadays I have been learning the grammar and enrich my vocabulary~ I am not really confidence in speaking Korean honestly but I will practice more~~

your tips are really inspiring, I can say I do most of them especially the variety shows but it still sucks. I take some lessons everyday but when I take breaks it takes me soooo long to be back and I still search for a study partner to stay motivated. It's my 6th month as a learner IG but I started while I could barely read hangeul. Keep it up I'm waiting for more! 파이팅!♡⁠.

I can read Hangul and was trying to learn Korean on my own for years but I cant keep doing it regularly and the important key about learning a new language is consistency, which I didnt have haha but I hope it will be better as I am trying different methods. Your video was in my suggested, as I am interested in BTS a lot, I get lots of adds for Korean XD but as what works for me? Singing (or try) out loud with SUGA, well, all the others too, SUGA raps are hard! But I am enjoying myself inmensly. I do video's how-to-sing- along, a lot, it does help, Hailey is a good one, she sings along as well, as well as pronouncing. Writing along with Duolingo's works too, I might not be as quick as when I studied English and French back in my school days, but I am noticing progress in understanding words and recognizing them. Listening as much as I can helps, but your suggestion of shows I will do ( although I love to binge RUN episodes of BTS ) I really want to learn this beautiful language :D

Such great tips. Learning Hangeul was the first step for me. Plus if there are Korean KZfaqrs you like, there are always Korean subtitles as well. This makes you read those as they speak. After watching dramas for over a decade, I realised that in the last few years I’ve learned way more Korean and been able to speak better as well, with song lyrics and variety shows. I’m not even consistent but I see great improvement. Being a BTS army, I connected so much with their music but couldn’t retain the meanings of words. So I began jotting words and making sense out of them. I also watch my fav actors’ KZfaq channels because it helps me connect better with them and they always add Korean and English subs for international audience. I switch back and forth and make notes. These days when I listen to old BTS songs I suddenly have moments of realisation like, omg I finally understand 😅 Context understanding has gotten better too. I added the Korean keyboard on my phone last year so I could type and see for myself what mistakes I make versus the word suggestions. It helps me pick up the language so much better. In general, it really helps to keep an open mind, because sometimes we tend to miss the most basic grammar points so it helps to go back to older videos. Instagram is full of Korean lessons these days so it’s all very helpful. Don’t be hard on yourself or be afraid to start again from the basics if need be. 화이팅 ❤️

Totally agree! Contextualizing and transcribing (reading the subs) really helps with learning and retaining vocab! I relate a lot with the "omg I finally understand these lyrics" moment 😂 My appreciation towards the songs simultaneously shoots up lol Also with the grammar points, I ALWAYS get things wrong and am constantly asking myself, "Is it 예요 or 에요 or 이에요" and "is it 어 or 오, 여 or 요" 😅🙃 Thank you so much for watching and leaving a comment! Thank you for sharing these valuable tips and informations ❤ I've been learning korean for more than a year now, at first, i was stuck at the A1 level for along time, but then i started to listen to podcasts and other materials everyday and after 2 months of consistency I've noticed a huge improvement, my level elevated to the edge of A2, but then i got stuck again, unlocking the intermediate level seems quite challenging and i feel like i need to change my methods, but still can't figure out what to do, also, as listening and comprehension were my main focus all along, my speaking skills are quite basic, what do you recommend me to do?

Hi everyone im currently attending uni lang program and no one has recommended this. as an artist I don't like ai... but chatgpt is absolutely useful when it comes to learning any language. You can practice writing to it and ask it to correct you. ask if you're using the grammar correctly and explain the process. finally its way faster to ask chatgpt to explain a vocab or grammar. its ridiculously useful and I use it everyday in class if I don't understand something or want to sound more advanced

I just realised that I do pretty much all of it as beginner learner like learning new words from song lyrics and new sentences from shows (like Run BTS, Suchwita and IU’s Palate) and KZfaq channels like ODG, Pixid and Kode. But I don’t understand much because I don’t have enough words yet. But I recognise the sentences and words I know. I am making very slow progress and I’m losing patience but it’s okay. I am just waiting for my vocabulary to build up. Then I’ll use the “writing to-do list in Korean” tip you gave. Thank you for that ❤.

I think slow but steady progress is always better than no progress😉 Maybe you can start by writing your to-do list instead of waiting to build up vocab! If you want to write "read a book" but don't know what the words are, it forces you to look them up. When you do so, the words tend to stick better and by doing so you can build your vocab!

I've been trying to learn Korean for a while now but I haven't been able to keep learning on a daily basis. I would spend about a month of actual teaching myself then spend 2-4 months where I didn't teach myself new content and just watched Korean shows. However, I did learn a lot through shows. A good point for knowing when learning a language is that if you know other languages that aren't English you should be able to catch onto Korean and other languages easily. I know Spanish and some German so I picked up good amount of Korean in the first few months I started. Normally if you know at least one other language that is not English most other languages are easier to learn since they are structured similarly. Also when learning a language it is best to take courses that is already organised by a teacher or like you said using websites like How to Study Korean. Through being in multiple German and Spanish classes I am able to follow the structure they had in those classes and applied it to learning korean myself. I have also used Talk to Me in Korean books but ofc that costs money but they are very helpful, well organised, and formatted in a way that appeals to my eyes. Another way of learning a language is by changing the language of your phone, tablet, or laptop. In one of my Spanish classes my teacher has the class change the language of our phones into Spanish. It does help a little. I loved the video! I'll try to incorporate some of what you did into my learning especially the writing and speaking part since I dont get much output when learning.

When I go there I talk with her in Korean. Well talk is maybe to strong word :D I say few sentences in Korean and she give me feedback

Hello! This video is amazing. I started to learn Korean a couple months ago. Before that I have already known alphabet and read. I am learning grammar these days. But learning vocabs is one of the most sophisticated thing for me and I struggle with this all time. Can you give me some advice?

Thank you! Perhaps you can assess your current approach to studying vocab and figure out what's not working for you. Do you go through a vocab book and repeatedly write down words? This is just my personal experience but I found it difficult and unexciting trying to remember vocab like that so I tried to incorporate them into short sentences. For example, instead of memorizing the word "운동 (exercise)," I would try to put that into context and form a sentence like "운동하면 기분이 좋아진다 (if I exercise I feel better)." You can also learn and memorize new words by thinking of a sentence you would like to say (ex: I went for a walk today) and then figuring out how to say that in Korean (오늘 산책 했어요). I also like to remind myself that I most likely won't remember words immediately and I'd need repeated exposure for it to sink in. If you can, try to actively recall words you've learned or review them often!

I love this theme. I'm also learning Korean alone. The hardest thing is that I have to learn it trough English, while my native language is Hungarian. I should find a Korean friend, who want to learn Hungarian.

I noticed that you mix English and Japanese in your notebook. I'm curious if you find it easier to learn Korean using English sources or Japanese. I've looked at both and in some cases I found the Korean online lessons in Japanese easier, due to the similarity of grammar and word meaning but I consume most of my media through English subtitles so I've kind of stalled going deeper into my Korean studies as I'm not sure if I should look into Korean lessons in English or in Japanese.

Thanks for the comment! I am very much the same in that I also consume media with English subtitles but find the grammar/words easier to learn in Japanese. I never really limited myself to sticking to only English or only Japanese when learning Korean and I mix it up quite often. For example, I used the English website "How to Learn Korean" as a reference to study grammar but if I couldn't fully understand the content, I'd google the Japanese equivalent and take notes in the language that was easiest to understand/easiest to make a connection. For me, reading materials in English is a lot easier so I tend to opt for English sites, but I link a lot of the words and grammar to its Japanese equivalent because it makes more sense in my brain. If you find studying grammar and vocabulary in Japanese easier, I think it wouldn't hurt to go for the Japanese lessons. I also think it's totally fine to continue consuming media in English because the consumption of media is basically a way to practice what you've learned and increase exposure. I hope that helps!

Similar to you, reading is a lot easier for me in English but since I've been following kpop for a while now, I can understand some Korean and when I watch videos that offer subtitles in both Japanese and English, I notice that the English subtitles are sometimes very different from what they are actually saying so then I switch to Japanese subtitles, and it is much more accurate (lol, makes me very thankful I know both languages). I will take your advice and check out that site and and then supplement with the Japanese equivalent when needed. Thank you for your help! 👃🏻

hey! i’ve just crossed your video , which is interesting and well-said to me. i’ve a little question which tickles me, do you go over what you have learned the day before ? or maybe you test youself at the end of each week? and do you fix a number of words or sentences to stick in your mind not to get overwhelmed because a lot of people talk about writing,reading,listening,speaking but they never spoke of reviewing . i can see a lot of them prefer just get immerse into the language but others say it’s important to review them. what do thing about it ? thanks again keep it up 👍🏻

Hi and thanks for watching! I honestly don't have a rigid study schedule (I'd probably benefit from one though...) because if I force myself to "study" then I tend to lose motivation. Thus, I don't test myself week by week nor set a fixed number or words that I need to memorize. Instead, I just try to create an environment that will allow me to, as you mentioned, immerse myself in the language. The more I do so, the more I pick up on commonly used phrases/words. I find thinking and speaking in Korean useful as well because it forces me to confront and research things I don't know/things I wish to articulate. It's a bit difficult to explain my studying style but I would say it's sort of a "vagabond" and very "loose/laid back" method. I do study grammar every now and then (because I think you can only learn what you already know and/or previously encountered) and each time I'll check to see if I can recall the content. As for reviewing, I think I'm constantly "reviewing" but not in the sense that I set aside time to pull out my notebook and look back on my notes. It's more like I'll be watching a show with Korean subtitles or reading a post and I'll stumble upon grammar/words that I've seen a couple times. If I can actively recall the meaning and its usage, then I've successfully mastered it. However if I fail to do so, then that's when I'll pull out my phone and start looking things up. I think a lot of people bring up the idea of "immersion" because creating an environment allows you to expose yourself to words you know, words you don't know, words you barely know and with each exposure, you're either learning or reviewing the language. I hope that made sense! I'm not the best at explaining my thoughts...😅

Do you have any recommendations on where to buy books? I was thinking about getting children's books to start and then going up from there. But I've also seen people practicing with illustrated books with less dialogue that aren't for children.

The only options for me was to find some on Mercari (similar to ebay in the US), the bookstore, or at the library! I googled "short stories in Korean free" and there was a site that offered material that was worth looking at though!

Hello! May I know as well how you plan out in studying Hangul? I'm currently studying hangul and quite able to read and understand some phrases. But, part of me I feel scattered and don't know what to learn for this day (something like this). :(

Hi! When I actually started studying, I just did the lessons on “How to Learn Korean” one by one (though I just skimmed through the ones I already felt I had a solid understanding on). How about trying 1~3 lessons on the days you plan on studying? I would try to focus on learning in depth rather than blasting through the lessons so the grammar points really stick☺️ I think making your own sentences, especially those you might use in real life situations, and saying them aloud really help! Also, I think it’s totally fine to feel scattered! I didn’t study everyday (at some point I even stopped “studying”) but I made an effort to constantly be exposed to Korean through videos, the news, books, social media, etc. Hope that helps! 화이팅~~😍

I think it's good for intermediate readers! There are passages of different lengths so if you want to challenge yourself, you can read the long ones and if you want an easy read, you can opt for the short ones😊

Hi! Sorry for the late response. I just bought whatever cheap book I could get my hands on and anything that I would be interested in reading (books my idols recommended, books on psychology, books with cute covers, etc). When I went to Korea, I thought children’s books could be helpful for beginners! If you google 어린이 동화책 you might find something 😊 For reference, my first book was 라이언, 내 곁에 있어줘!

I've watched a lot of shows during these past 4 years and I have to say it all depends on preference but if you're interested in mine, here are some I'm currently watching! - Jeongkwaja - I live alone (the clips available on youtube) - Knowing bros (only when idols I'm interested appear) I watch the news and listen to Day 6 kiss the radio a lot. Also, I'm interested in psychology and self-help(?) so I watch Korean youtubers who create related content ☺️

Google is NOT always 💯 accurate! Use what foreigners and idols use when they come to your country and that is Papago translate u til you can read Korean on your own!

Thank you for sharing! I believe that can be said with Papago and all translation apps in general. What I meant by "googling" was more so to "do in depth research" to figure out what is most likely correct😊

I don't use any specific language learning apps but some people have recommended Anki to memorize words! My sister likes to play with Duolingo but (based on my VERY biased observations😂) I feel like the material doesn't really stick if you don't put a lot of effort in reviewing and using whatever the app teaches you.
